Publishers","grobid_abstract":"The main objective of the research is to examine the artistic and cultural significance of Ghanaian printed fabrics. The study specifically sought to identify the various Ghanaian printed fabrics within the Ghanaian cultural setup , examine the artistic and cultural significance of the fabrics and appraise some aspects of the printed fabrics. The research design used was the qualitative approach based on a simple descriptive survey. The purposive sampling technique was used to select eight (8) fabric designs for the study. Interview and observation were used in collecting data. The analysis of the study was based on a pictorial view of the designs. This technique enabled the researchers to deal with the artistic study of the research. The findings of the study showed that there are many Ghanaian printed fabrics with different names that have cultural significance derived from various traditional values and beliefs. Artistically, the fabrics come in different colour-ways, providing a venue for a variety of aesthetic experience for their users. The simple and complex designs associated with these fabrics go a long way to provide the individual with numerous means of appreciating textile products. Fabrics in Ghana are not only chosen for their aesthetic outlook but rather have certain cultural and symbolic interpretations which are in line with their names. The younger generation might lose certain key components of the culture with regards to fabrics and their names. They therefore choose designs and wear without knowing their cultural interpretations and the kind of signals and messages they are sending across. These names and meanings are only known to few and therefore need some form of scholarly documentation. The study made use of qualitative research methodology. Purposive sampling technique was used to select the respondents for the study. Interviews were conducted and participant observations made at the various shops to gather data for the study. The study concluded that Ghanaian fabrics have unique names in relation to their composition and designs. Fabrics chosen based on the message the wearer want to send across, mood of the wearer or occasion and its significance are enormous. The Ghanaians have a rich cultural heritage that they cherish most. This cultural heritage could be seen through the way they dress during occasions such as funerals, weddings, festivals, durbars and naming ceremonies. Some of the fabrics that people wear during these occasions are Kente cloths, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" cloths (clothes stamped with locally prepared dyes). The Kente, "nteimu" and "kuntukuni" are locally produced by the people of Bonwire, Adawonmase and Ntonso. Although these clothes have some special designs and motifs that make them unique and aesthetically pleasing, they have not been effectively and comprehensively researched. This study intends to identify and describe the various designs and motifs in these fabrics, and then give the philosophical meanings associated with the designs and the motifs in them. The descriptive research design which is under the qualitative research approach was espoused to accomplish the goal and purpose of the study. In all, 20 woven Kente fabrics were sampled for the study using a purposive sampling technique. Of these, 5 were used for festival celebrations, 5 for marriage ceremonies, 5 for funeral celebrations and 5 for durbars and parties. The primary data was collected using interviews, observations and opinionnaire. The results showed that designs and motifs which are seen in the Kente cloths have philosophical meaning that can help one to understand his or her culture. In addition, some of the motifs and designs used to produce the various fabrics exhibit the creative abilities of our forefathers and their belief system. Studies have shown that Nwomu and Ntiamu techniques are limited in their applications as these cloths are significantly utilised for funeral and festive occasions. In a broader view, this limitation has affected the productivity and application of the cloth in Ghana and beyond. This practice-led studio experimental study identifies window blinds as an alternative interior decor application for Ntiamu and Nwomu. The study explored and produced window blinds using Nwomu and Ntiamu techniques as alternative and feasible methods for interior textile decoration. As an art studio-based research coupled with observation and interview as data collection instruments, the study revealed that the two techniques can be executed not only on stiff fabric but on lighter fabrics suitable for the production of blinds. Again, synthetic dyes can be used instead of the traditional badie dye commonly used by local craftsmen which has low colour and wash fastness. This is because individuals have different perceptions about a particular stimulus. Obviously, consumer perception and attitudes towards their own country’s products keeps on changing. Personal observations and empirical evidence shows that Ghanaian textile industry have not been able to achieve its set objectives due to inappropriate product marketing and this has influenced the perceptions people greatly towards the Ghanaian prints. The aim of the study is to determine what is responsible for the perceptions towards made-in-Ghana textiles and to ascertain what can be done to influence the perception towards the Ghanaian textiles. The sample size consisted of two hundred [200] respondents mainly from selected staff and students of Koforidua Technical University. Both primary data and secondary data and interviews and questionnaires to gather the relevant data needed for the research were used. Tour guides, curators, historians and artisans were selected as accessible population as they possessed knowledge of the cultural significance, historical context and traditional methods of textile preservation. The study used a combination of convenience or purposive sampling with random stratified sampling to select 12 respondents (3 from each group) across different regions of Ghana, ensuring a representative sample. The study concluded that indigenous Ghanaian textiles are an essential part of the country&#39;s cultural heritage. The use of indigenous textiles in various cultural activities is crucial for preserving and promoting Ghanaian culture. These textiles are deeply intertwined with Ghanaian cultural practices and play crucial roles in transmitting customs and traditions to the outside world.
