Jesus answered, if I do not cleanse thee, you cannot partake with me. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Simon Peter said to him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Jesus said to him, he that comes out from bathing has occasion only to wash his feet, the rest of his body being clean: so you are clean, but not every one of you. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>for he knew who would betray him; therefore, said he, you are not every one of you clean.<p> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>after he had washed their feet, he took his garment, and setting down again, he said to them, do you comprehend what I have been doing? <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>you call me master, and lord: and you are in the right; for so I am. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>if I then, tho' lord and master, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>for I have given you example, that you might behave to one another, as I have to you. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>I declare unto you, the servant is not greater than his lord, neither he that is sent, greater than he that sent him. <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>if ye comprehend these things, happy are ye if ye put them in practice.<p> <A name="19"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts His Betrayal<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>I say not this of you all; for I know whom I have chosen: and that passage of the scripture must be fulfilled, "He that eateth bread with me, hath lift up his heel against me." <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>I tell it you now before it happens, that when it is come to pass, you may believe that I am the Messias. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>I declare unto you, he that receiveth him that I send, receiveth me: and he that receiveth me, receiveth him that sent me.<p> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>When Jesus utter'd these words, he was troubled in spirit, and said without disguise, I assure you, that one of you shall betray me. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>then the disciples looked one on another, being in pain to know who he meant. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>now the favourite disciple of Jesus sat next to him at table. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, to ask who it was he meant. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>then accordingly bending his head to Jesus's ear, he whisper'd, Lord, who is it? <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Jesus answered, he it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have made it, and when he had made the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>and after he had taken the sop, Satan entred into him, then said Jesus to him, what you do, do quickly. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>but the company at table did not know what he meant by saying so. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>for as Judas had the purse, some of them thought, that Jesus had ordered him to buy what was necessary against the feast: or give something to the poor. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Judas then having received the sop, immediately went out: and it was night.<p> <A name="32"></a><p class="hdg">Love One Another<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../romans/12.htm#9">Romans 12:9&#8211;13</a>; <a href ="../1_john/3.htm#11">1 John 3:11&#8211;24</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>When he was gone, Jesus said, now is the son of man glorified, and God is glorified by him. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>as God is glorified by him, so God will glorify him in himself, and will immediately glorify him. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>my dear children, I am with you but for a little while, you shall seek me: but as I said to the Jews, so now I say to you, "where I am going you cannot come." <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>a new commandment I give unto you, "that ye love one another; that you would have the same love for one another as I have had for you." <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>by this mutual love shall all men know that you are my disciples.<p> <A name="37"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts Peter&#8217;s Denial<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#31">Matthew 26:31&#8211;35</a>; <a href ="../mark/14.htm#27">Mark 14:27&#8211;31</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#31">Luke 22:31&#8211;38</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/john/13-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>Simon Peter said to him, Lord, where are you going?
