This notion of ambiences is related to the human being position through its perception of environmental physical phenomenon during a pedestrian walk. Presented work aims to evaluate, so as to characterize, the impact of sound ambiences (soundscape) onto an urban pedestrian pathway using GIS spatial dynamical mapping. To carry out this scheme, our research work within AMBIOFLUX project concerns spatial interaction between sound ambience (soundscape) and man urban spatial trajectory (soundwalk). Spatial impression of soundsources or soundmarks has to be both defined through acoustical measurement and perception informational evaluation. The remainder of this paper is dedicated to the evaluation's methodology of the pedestrian pathway's acoustic fingerprint using the GearScape spatial formalism described thereafter. In a city, its sonic environment is shaped by three broad categories of sources: geophonies such as wind, rain, thunderstorms, etc; biophonies such as the sounds made by birds, insects, pets, and animals; and anthrophonies such as people’s voices, music from hi-fi systems, and noises from traffic, ventilation systems, construction and demolition works, and trade activities. In recent years, soundwalks have become one of the key methods to characterize city soundscapes. Soundwalks involve a person (or a group of people) who follows a typical path, track or trail that can be considered as representative in the studied area. During the walks, sound recordings are normally made with a binaural microphone system and a recorder. The walker(s) will also make comments on the path, sound characteristics and sources, as well as take photos and notes on the map. The perception of sonic environment is considered as the soundscape of the place. ...

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Identification of a city ’ s soundscape using soundwalks","attachmentId":89973056,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/85202228/Identification_of_a_city_s_soundscape_using_soundwalks","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

A model for implementing soundscape maps in smart cities
Efstathios Margaritis

Noise Mapping

Smart cities are required to engage with local communities by promoting a user-centred approach to deal with urban life issues and ultimately enhance people’s quality of life. Soundscape promotes a similar approach, based on individuals’ perception of acoustic environments. This paper aims to establish a model to implement soundscape maps for the monitoring and management of the acoustic environment and to demonstrate its feasibility. The final objective of the model is to generate visual maps related to perceptual attributes (e.g. ‘calm’, ‘pleasant’), starting from audio recordings of everyday acoustic environments. The proposed model relies on three main stages: (1) sound sources recognition and profiling, (2) prediction of the soundscape’s perceptual attributes and (3) implementation of soundscape maps. This research particularly explores the two latter phases, for which a set of sub-processes and methods is proposed and discussed. It is also at home in artistic/ music composition territory engendering themes of participation, social context, aesthetic listening, environmental sensitization, interpretation, pedagogy, awareness raising, psychogeographic musings, even catharsis. This complex is manifest when participants are invited to verbalize their experience at the summative discussion when the silence is broken. Urban soundwalking can elicit something of the human (inter)relationship with everyday soundscapes that lab work evades. Furthermore, it can acts as an ear-opener to the sonic dimension of the city, helping re-prioritize the auditory within the rich mix of urban design and the evolving paradigm of ecological urbanism. This paper reflects on the author’s soundwalking strategies and feedback from participants’ experiences undertaken over the past 10 years.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Silent Soundwalking: an urban pedestrian soundscape methodology","attachmentId":31570124,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/4028850/Silent_Soundwalking_an_urban_pedestrian_soundscape_methodology","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Urban Acoustic Simulation: Analysis of Urban Public Spaces through Auditory senses
Merate Barakat

eCAADe proceedings

This paper explores the sonic characteristics of urban spaces, with the application of apprehending acoustic space and form theory. The theory defines auditory spaces as acoustical arenas, which are spaces defined and delineated by sonic events. Historically, cities were built around a soundmark, for example, the resonance of a church bell or propagation of a calling for prayer, or a factory horn. Anyone living beyond the horizon of this soundmark was not considered citizens of that town. Furthermore, the volume of urban sonic arenas depends on natural. Digital simulation is necessary to visualize the ephemeral and temporal nature of sound, within a dynamic immersive environment like urban spaces. This paper digitally analyses the different morphologies of old cities and forms of growth in relation to the sound propagation and ecological effects. An experiment is conducted with the aid of an ancient North-African city model, exposed to a point cloud agent system. By analysing how the sound propagates from the known soundmark through the urban fabric, with the wind pressure interference; the paper compares the theoretical concept of soundmarks and the known perimeter of the ancient city Keywords.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Urban Acoustic Simulation: Analysis of Urban Public Spaces through Auditory senses","attachmentId":96949883,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/94515312/Urban_Acoustic_Simulation_Analysis_of_Urban_Public_Spaces_through_Auditory_senses","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Soundwalking as a methodology for understanding soundscapes
Mags Adams

2008

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Soundwalking as a methodology for understanding soundscapes","attachmentId":72163512,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/57103903/Soundwalking_as_a_methodology_for_understanding_soundscapes","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Urban soundscape maps modelled with geo-referenced data
Catherine Domingues

Noise Mapping, 2016

The noise maps that are currently proposed as part of the EU Directive are based on the calculation of the Lday, Levening and Lnight. These levels are calculated from emission and propagation models that are expensive in time. These noise maps are criticized for being distant from the perception of city users. Thus, calculation models of sound quality have been proposed, for being closer to city users’ perception. They are either based on perceptual variables, or on acoustic measurements, or on georeferenced data, the latter being often already integrated into the Geographic Information Systems of most French metropolises. Considering 89 Parisian situations, this article proposes to compare the sound quality really perceived, with those from models using geo-referenced data. It also looks at the modeling of perceptual variables that influence the sound quality, such as perceived loudness, the perceived time ratio of traffic, voices and birds.
