According to many scholars, the time has come for a teaching paradigm to change, i.e. to move from the &#39;traditional&#39; EFL principles to the new WE andlor ELF focus. This paper reviews and summarizes the current paradigmatic changes and juxtaposes them to solutions appliedto global teaching materials. We do not explore the official and unofficial policies in textbook selection at various types of schools and educational institutions in the Czech Republic, nor do we promote the ELF perspective; rather it is our goal to provide a brief comparison of the two teaching paradigms. UWCs are globally based, pre-university schools educating students from over 140 countries through the medium of English (Content and Language Integrated Learning; CLIL). To provide a comparison with a local context, we surveyed the 1st International School of Ostrava (the 1st ISO) in the Czech Republic. The methods employed are both qualitative and quantitative in nature. We report the results of two questionnaire surveys among UWC and the 1st ISO students and teachers and direct observations of teaching practices. Analysis of the results reveals that due to the linguistically and culturally liberal school culture, written and unwritten language policies, and classroom techniques employed by both teachers and students, UWC students possess a high level of linguistic awareness (LA) and linguistic sensitivity. We explore what attitudes to language use and (non)-native speakers and other factors foster the overall efficient use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in this international multilingual setting. In a scientific writing course at the Czech Academy of Sciences, we raise students’ rhetorical awareness (RA) by a reading-into-writing task; students post their reflections on a variety of studies on Contrastive Rhetoric (CR) in online discussion forums. In this paper we explore whether our students are new to CR and how they benefit from it. Content analysis (Schreier 2012) was applied to over 100 reflections collected between 2013 and 2016 revealing a great range of conflicting attitudes. In almost 70% of responses, students are completely new to CR and aim at implementing changes to come closer to AAS. About 10% identify themselves with AAS and see no cultural differences in communicating science; other 15% see writing cultures as complementary, plea for preserving the ‘present [rhetorical] plurality’ and are aware of cross-cultural overlaps and the hybrid nature of their writing (Connor 2004, Canagarajah 2013, Lorés-Sanz 2016). We propose that raising RA is useful, but not sufficient. Using the Discourse Historical Approach, a method falling within Critical Discourse Analysis, the article analyzes the 2019 housing speech by Prime Minister Theresa May to ascertain whether the changing situation has been reflected in the Conservatives’ housing rhetoric, traditionally driven by a property‑owning ethos. These are sentences which, despite their grammatical accuracy, lead the reader to a misinterpretation based on the erroneous assigning of syntactic functions to ambiguous words or phrases. Re-reading is then necessary for correct interpretation. This phenomenon is typical especially for analytical languages and is the frequent subject of psycholinguistic research, which examines how text is parsed. Documentary material for the article was collected from Internet sources and from various linguistic studies. The sentences are subjected to parsing, thanks to which 10 different types are recognized. Key factors that allow misinterpretation of sentences include, above all, homonymy of forms of different word types (eg due to conversion), ellipses or juxtapositions. Frequency of certain language chunks also seems to be an important factor which conditions the reader&#39;s expectation of the probable completion of the sentence, which, however, is in the end contrary to the author&#39;s intention. Some of these factors are so strong that it is possible to freely and productively generate additional sentences based on the same formula.The article further points out the similarity of the phenomenon with ambiguity. While in the case of ambiguity there are always two different deep structures, in the case of the sentences of the described phenomenon there is only one deep structure. The double interpretation of garden path sentences is possible up to a certain point, when the reader realizes that he has to reanalyze the whole structure. The phenomenon can thus be imagined as a temporary ambiguity (ambiguity up to a point). Frequency of certain language chunks also seems to be an important factor which conditions the reader's expectation of the probable completion of the sentence, which, however, is in the end contrary to the author's intention. Some of these factors are so strong that it is possible to freely and productively generate additional sentences based on the same formula.The article further points out the similarity of the phenomenon with ambiguity. While in the case of ambiguity there are always two different deep structures, in the case of the sentences of the described phenomenon there is only one deep structure. The double interpretation of garden path sentences is possible up to a certain point, when the reader realizes that he has to reanalyze the whole structure. The phenomenon can thus be imagined as a temporary ambiguity (ambiguity up to a point). By comparison with a similar interpretation of images based on optical illusion, the author suggests that garden path sentences can be classified as syntactic illusions.","publication":"Prague Studies First, it describes the Louvain family of learner corpora, where this project originated, and provides a detailed description of LINDSEI, its history, design, structure, transcription system and metadata. It then outlines the nature of the Czech subcorpus LINDSEI_CZ, telling the story of its compilation and providing a quantitative description of the corpus size, task sizes and learner variables, as well as a description of the transcription process. advanced in a language is often undermined by the feeling shared by the learners and their teachers that whilst there still is considerable progress to be made it is difficult to see what concrete steps to take. The study explores different ways of describing advancedness — using CEFR descriptors, the AdLs’ self-perceptions, the views of their teachers and, finally, through a sample analysis of spoken production of advanced learners.
