Initially, the logo created a sense of community amongst anti-nuclear power activists. It was a powerful recruitment and fundraising tool, now it circulates as nostalgia, sparking both solidarity and alienation. The article builds on interviews with members of the Danish anti-nuclear power movement and a group of Danish youth today, including the founder of a current pro-nuclear power group. It relies on theories of rhetorical agency and ecology that have pinpointed the unpredictability and interconnectedness of rhetoric, and reminds us, further, of rhetoric\u0026amp;#39;s potential endurance.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Res Rhetorica journal"},{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Kristine Marie Berg"}],"contributor":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Kristine Marie Berg"}],"dateCreated":"2024-04-14","dateModified":"2024-04-21","datePublished":"2024-01-01","headline":"Perseverance and zeal? By examining eight images taken from four separate Greenpeace image campaigns, this thesis shows how these demonstrations generally, and images of them more specifically, draw attention to climate change issues through their rhetorical capacity to challenge dominant cultural values that have enabled climate-changing human activities to persist. As such, the rhetorical capacity of these images further demonstrates Kevin DeLuca’s image event theory, which suggests how visual demonstrations can be designed to attract mass media attention that then leads to public advocacy and adherence. More specifically, this thesis argues that a novel understanding of Kenneth Burke’s paired concepts of identification and disidentification can show us precisely how Greenpeace’s rhetorical agenda unfolds, how their visual representations of extreme environmental activism and advocacy challenge cultural values that support environmentally damaging industrializing practices and the subordination of nature to human progress. To support my argument, Chapter 1 establishes a context for environmental advocacy, describing both the scientific consensus surrounding climate change issues, as well as the mixed opinions held by the public about these very same issues. Chapter 2 examines the academic literature concerning visual rhetoric and environmental advocacy, and introduces DeLuca’s image event theory and Burke’s concepts of identification and disidentification as exploratory lenses through which visual representations of extreme environmental advocacy can be studied. Chapter 3 performs a close reading and analysis of eight images from Greenpeace demonstrations, and outlines the mechanisms through which they achieve their rhetorical effects. Lastly, Chapter 4 posits that visual representations of extreme environmental activism and advocacy provide Greenpeace with a much larger mouthpiece in the world than they could ever achieve using traditional approaches to advocacy and conventional channels of public and political debate. As such, the study concludes that the visual rhetoric of environmental activists has the capacity to perform ideological critique in the process of reshaping public perceptions of climate change issues.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;VISUAL IMAGES AND THE RHETORIC OF ENVIRONMENTAL ADVOCACY&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:46630995,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/26317529/VISUAL_IMAGES_AND_THE_RHETORIC_OF_ENVIRONMENTAL_ADVOCACY&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/26317529/VISUAL_IMAGES_AND_THE_RHETORIC_OF_ENVIRONMENTAL_ADVOCACY"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="1" data-entity-id="36229772" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/36229772/Western_Journal_of_Communication_Making_Sense_of_the_Peoples_Climate_March_Towards_an_Aesthetic_Approach_to_the_Rhetoric_of_Social_Protest">Western Journal of Communication Making Sense of the People&#39;s Climate March: Towards an Aesthetic Approach to the Rhetoric of Social Protest</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="36374850" href="https://louisville.academia.edu/nicholaspaliewicz">Nicholas Paliewicz</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This essay contributes to participatory critical rhetoric (PCR) by offering a Rancièrian aesthetic approach to the rhetoric of social protest at the 2014 People’s Climate March (PCM). Although the PCM has been praised for its democratic commitments to social change, I argue that police reinforced a consensual aesthetic order that acquiesced with the status quo by partitioning sensibilities of space and mobility. Demarcating acceptable spaces for protest and requiring marchers to keep moving at all times enforced a hierarchical aesthetic order that limited possibilities of dissensus. However, there was one ephemeral moment of dissensus when all of the protesters stopped and observed a moment of silence. Through protests, social media campaigns and civil unrest, different groups seek to impact the speed, direction and distributional effects of this transformation. In this paper, we develop a conceptualisation of how such resistance is socially mobilised. We ask how people come to resort to open resistance in the context of energy regime dynamics. The growing literature on the topic highlights that declining material and social capital are not enough to understand resistance in times of fossil fuels. We suggest in this study that attention to a wider spectrum of emotions is crucial for understanding the political and ethical contestations through which changes in energy provision materialize. We draw upon sociological theory, in particular the notion of interaction rituals, to understand the social and affective process of resistance. The concept of interaction rituals captures the movement from feeling aggrieved to mobilisation of resistance through attention to the sharing and transformation of emotions. We apply our theorisation in two Swedish examples of contemporary resistancethe Forest Rebellion and the Petrol Protestto illustrate the grievances that underpin these movements, and how interaction rituals mobilise and justify resistance. We end the paper with a discussion and comparison of the two examples, and the implications of our findings for (academic) knowledge about the role of resistance in relation to energy regimes.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;Theorising resistance in times of fossil fuels: Ecological grief, righteous anger and interaction rituals in Sweden&#39;s energy regime shift&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:116530206,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/121715145/Theorising_resistance_in_times_of_fossil_fuels_Ecological_grief_righteous_anger_and_interaction_rituals_in_Swedens_energy_regime_shift&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/121715145/Theorising_resistance_in_times_of_fossil_fuels_Ecological_grief_righteous_anger_and_interaction_rituals_in_Swedens_energy_regime_shift"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="7" data-entity-id="120958057" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/120958057/There_is_No_Alternative_A_Symbolic_Interactionist_Account_of_Swedish_Climate_Activists">There is No Alternative: A Symbolic Interactionist Account of Swedish Climate Activists</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="56197049" href="https://independent.academia.edu/BerglundKristoffer">Kristoffer Berglund</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2019</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Today, a climate crisis is immanent. In this thesis I have conducted nine semi-structured interviews with Swedish climate activists. I here answer four research questions: 1) how they construct the problem of climate change; 2) how they present the non-activists and their motivations; 3) how they present themselves and their own role; and 4) how strategies and reactions can be understood from the dynamic between these. To that end, I use symbolic interactionism as my theoretical framework, drawing on Goffman&amp;#39;s self-presentation theory and the sociology of emotions. I find that activists describe climate change as springing out of the subjugation of nature under economics, with its following fossil fuel combustion and resource exploitation. Activists have awakened to this, whereas others are described as in stuck in denial and occupied by a false consciousness. Activists present themselves as very understanding toward the others, avoiding ascribing guilt to individuals given that...</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{&quot;location&quot;:&quot;wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal&quot;,&quot;work_title&quot;:&quot;There is No Alternative: A Symbolic Interactionist Account of Swedish Climate Activists&quot;,&quot;attachmentId&quot;:115950136,&quot;attachmentType&quot;:&quot;pdf&quot;,&quot;work_url&quot;:&quot;https://www.academia.edu/120958057/There_is_No_Alternative_A_Symbolic_Interactionist_Account_of_Swedish_Climate_Activists&quot;,&quot;alternativeTracking&quot;:true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/120958057/There_is_No_Alternative_A_Symbolic_Interactionist_Account_of_Swedish_Climate_Activists"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="8" data-entity-id="781464" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/781464/Assessing_Rhetorics_of_Social_Resistance">Assessing Rhetorics of Social Resistance</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="33231" href="https://missouristate.academia.edu/BrianOtt">Brian L .
