Our goal was to effectively measure this teaching methodology and to assess the practicality of this concept. Materials and Methods After analyzing the existing ultrasound training for medical students, improvements were made to the existing curriculum for 2nd-year students that addressed the drawbacks in ultrasound education, including instrumentation, anatomy, and ultrasound-guided procedures. Prior to exposure to ultrasound education, all students participated in an anonymous quiz to determine and document their baseline knowledge. The ultrasound immersion week included; hands-on education and lectures. Students were divided into small groups with radiologists supervising ultrasound skills on standardized patients and intervention using phantom models. After the week-long exposure to radiology and ultrasound, students took a post-exposure assessment to evaluate their knowledge. Efficacy of the program was determined by comparing pre and post-exposure test results. Results Students from Cohort A and B had a 19% improvement, and Cohort C had a 39% improvement. Pre and Post immersion quiz analysis were validated with statistical testing with a p-value &lt;0.01. A thorough analysis of all three years showed significant improvement among medical students. Conclusion The study proved that short, accelerated ultrasound education programs are effective in educating second-year medical students. After this session, we tested the timing and quality of their image acquisition skills on a separate normal model. Quality of images was based on a point value from 0 to 2 per image. This was followed by a posttest of static US images, which was graded in the same manner as the pretest. Results: Thirty-one students participated in the study. Median time to acquire 2 images was 112.5 sec (range = 15-420 sec). Acquisition time was unaffected by previous experience (p = .97). The mean score on the quality of 2 images (maximum score = 4) was 3.84; median was 4 (range = 1-4). Image quality was significantly better in participants with previous US experience (p = .014). Scores on interpretation of static images improved significantly from pretest to posttest by a median of 8.25 points (p = .0001). Conclusion: Our introductory US course is effective at significantly improving medical students&#39; interpretation of static US images. Research question: Are students in smaller groups with access to a combination of lectures and hands-on patient contact most likely to have better ultrasound image interpretation skills, than students in larger groups with only interactive didactic lectures? Methodology: First-year students at the preclinical Program of the College of Medicine, participated in two 2-h introductory interactive ultrasound sessions. The study comprised two cohorts: 2012/2013 students, who were offered large group teaching (LGT) sessions (control group), and 2013/2014 students, who received the intervention in small group learning problem-based learning (PBL) sessions (experimental group). The overall learning objectives were identical for both groups. The success of the module was evaluated using pre-and post-tests as well as students&#39; feedback. Results: The students in the experimental group showed significantly higher scores in interpretations of images than those in the control group. The experimental group showed achievement of learning outcomes along with higher levels of satisfaction with the module compared to the latter. Conclusion: Posttest knowledge of the basics of ultrasound improved significantly over the pretest in the experimental group. In addition, students&#39; overall satisfaction of the ultrasound module was shown to be higher for the PBL compared to the LGT groups. Small groups in an interactive and PBL setting along with opportunities for hands-on practice and simultaneous visualization of findings on a high definition screen should enhance preclinical student learning of the basics of ultrasound. Despite the potential of ultrasound as a clinical, teaching and learning tool for students in the preclinical years, standardized recommendations have yet to be created regarding its integration into the curricula within academic institutions and clinical medicine.
