For a large fraction of the Syrian population the access to education has therefore been interrupted and recent statistics show that almost 3 million Syrian children have not had access to any education during more than four years. The presented research aims are twofold. Firstly, to survey ongoing projects that make use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in rebuilding education for the Syrian population and, secondly, to offer recommendations for good practices on how governments and relevant non-governmental organizations (NGO's) can optimize their use in rebuilding the educational system during the ongoing, armed conflict. The research design is based on a multiple case-study methodology where we mainly focus on three concrete initiatives. The first is located inside Syria, the second is based in a refugee camp in Lebanon, and the third is an online learning platform. The main hypothesis of this work states that the use of ICTs can, if implemented correctly, greatly improve the governments and related organizations efforts to solve the education crisis in Syria. Preliminary findings confirm that ICTs are a powerful tool that can aid in the process of rebuilding education. Cultures could be a source of conflict that affect the use of new media to make powerful collaborations among online communities across societies, and within the same society, however, there are still altercation between digital citizens, groups and nations (Hofstede, 2002). New media could help citizens in many directions such appreciating their diversities; solving their problems, sharing experiences and voicing out their salient issues without worries and shame. There is urgency for this research to help update data base to improve the current media governance and address vital issues of conflict and violence in Africa that are permanently on record, which might be occasionally contested in some African countries but almost impossible to erase or block. ICT in Africa could be the refuge for peace, security through embracing participatory governance principles on the one hand, and is implemented through user friendly harmonized, effective and efficient management tools and mechanisms on the other. Even if this field hasn‘t been strengthened by years of academic research, its relevance is increasingly emerging in relation to social and political contexts where processes – more or less conflictual – are characterizing new forms of civic and political participation, encouraging democratization movements in public life. Relying on a selected body of literature on the topic, this thesis work begins by a socio-political perspective on the impact of ICTs as new forms of information, communication and participation. Mobile phones and the internet have altered how we engage with the world. With technology usage expanding rapidly in the developing world, new avenues of participation, engagement, and accountability are emerging. Globally, more people now have the opportunity to actively make use of these tools to participate in processes that impact their societies. This opportunity for participation is also an opportunity for engaging in new ways with peacebuilding processes. As the field of technology for peacebuilding grows, most attention has been paid to the potential of new technologies for bridging the gap between warning and response. Whilst the focus on the use of technology for early warning and response is important, there is more to this growing field. The empowerment of people to participate in localized conflict management efforts is one of the most significant innovations and opportunities created by new technologies. Technology can contribute to peacebuilding processes by offering tools that foster collaboration, transform attitudes, and give a stronger voice to communities. This article aims to give practitioners two related frameworks to understand how new technologies can enhance peacebuilding. The first section looks at the functions that technology can have in a peacebuilding program as a tool for data processing, communication, engagement, and gaming.
