After surveying the history and methodology of the diachronic study of the Hebrew language, I examine orthographic, morphological, and syntactical evidence, which demonstrates a linguistic shift from the preexilic to the postexilic period. I demonstrate how these same late biblical features of the postexilic period became commonplace in Rabbinic Hebrew and in the Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls. I discuss the different views regarding the reasons biblical Hebrew experienced linguistic change and argue that the events of the Babylonian exile contain all the components linguists regard as necessary to account for language change. This new proposal-based on the dynamic description of languages and on the panchronic methodology, which are both necessary consequences of the grammaticalization framework, path and chaos theories, as well as of several principles of cognitive linguistics-constitutes an extension and improvement of the model formulated by John A. Cook. In 2002, J. A. Cook employed grammaticalization laws as the explanatory vehicle of the Biblical Hebrew verbal formations presenting a model which, being based on the findings of the grammaticalization and path theories, went beyond a purely diachronic perspective. However, the contrastive analysis of Cook's proposal with the requirements of the dynamic evolutionary view of languages demonstrates that this first application of the grammaticalization and path theories to the synchronic study of the Biblical Hebrew verb fails to comply with all the prerequisites derived from the two approaches. "What is written in the Torah how do you read it?" How to read the biblical text has been a problem since time immemorial, and the question: "How do you read it?" Seems as pertinent today as it ever was, the amoraim had a saying. "A text never departs from it simple meaning" and yet getting to that simple meaning seems such a complicated task. One medieval scholar who took seriously this adage was Ibn Janach. He in his determination to get to the simple (peshat) meaning of text was willing to raid and copy the learning of the Arabic Semitic culture around him. He copied, their methods imitated their rules (Maman, Comparative Semitic Philology in the Middle Ages, 2004, p. 10) and used their language to wrest out of the biblical text what he understood as its simple meaning, as its true meaning. His name is Rabbi Marwinas or Rabbi Ibn Janach and the culture he imitated was the Arabic one. Because he wrote in Arabic, he missed much of the credit he was perhaps due, but on the other hand he did not credit the Arab Grammarians, by name, who he imitated, with the credit they deserved and we had to wait almost a thousand years for Becker to reveal Ibn Janach's hidden sources . Perhaps as they were concealed so he was concealed. He did however credit his main Jewish source, R. David Hayyuj. Yet, reminiscent of how absolute spatial and temporal outputs for the Global Positioning System are calculated via relative inputs, so also do linguistic utterances rely upon the deictic values of prepositions for their spatial and temporal anchoring.
