Dit stekkertype werd in 1904 uitgevonden door Harvey Hubbell II. De stekker heeft twee platte, 1,5 mm dikke pinnen, die tussen de 15,9 en 18,3 mm lang zijn en 12,7 mm van elkaar staan. Op het eerste gezicht zijn de Japanse stekkers en contactdozen identiek aan de Amerikaanse, maar er is een klein verschil: bij de Japanse stekkers zijn de twee platte pinnen precies even lang, terwijl er bij de Amerikaanse variant de pinnen onderling een beetje in lengte verschillen. Japanse stekkers kunnen dus probleemloos in de VS gebruikt worden, maar het omgekeerde lukt niet altijd. Bovendien worden in Japan andere standaarden gehanteerd op het vlak van kabeldikte en toegelaten aantal ampère. Volgens de officiële NEMA-standaard zijn die gaatjes optioneel en eigenlijk bedoeld om het productieproces te vergemakkelijken. Dat neemt echter niet weg dat die gaatjes ook effectief op een nuttige manier kunnen worden gebruikt. Sommige speciale contactdozen (vooral dan op openbare plaatsen) hebben de mogelijkheid om de stekker intern in de contactdoos te vergrendelen, door twee metalen pinnetjes doorheen de gaatjes van de stekker te schuiven. Op die manier kan voorkomen worden dat bijvoorbeeld drankautomaten losgekoppeld worden. Verder is het ook zo dat stekkers van sommige pas aangekochte elektrische toestellen een plastic bandje doorheen de gaatjes van de stekker zitten hebben, waaraan dan een opschrift hangt in de trant van “Doe eerst X of Y alvorens dit toestel aan te sluiten”. De aardingspen is 3,2 mm langer dan de twee andere pinnen, die zelf tussen de 15,9 en 18,3 mm lang en 6,3 mm breed zijn. Net zoals bij type A zijn de twee platte parallelle pinnen 1,5 mm dik en staan ze 12,7 mm van elkaar. Deze stekker staat officieel geregistreerd onder de naam NEMA 5-15 in de VS en CS22.2, n°42 in Canada. Deze stekker wordt ook gebruikt in Japan, maar wel in veel mindere mate dan in Noord-Amerika. Voor alle duidelijkheid, dit is heel onveilig en kan leiden tot elektrocutie.</p> <p>Stekkers van het type A en B hebben een gaatje op het uiteinde van de platte pinnen. Die gaatjes zitten er niet zomaar: binnenin sommige stopcontacten zitten er immers uitstulpingen waardoor de stekkers in de contactdoos vast kunnen klikken. Op die manier kan de stekker moeilijker losschieten uit het stopcontact. In veel wandcontactdozen worden die gaatjes echter niet benut, waardoor de stekkers nogal losjes in de contactdoos zitten (vooral type A dan). Als je de stekker half uit het stopcontact trekt, staan de pinnen nog altijd onder spanning, en omdat die van boven tot onder uit metaal bestaan (ze hebben geen plastic “jasje” onderaan zoals bij <a title="Stekker & contactdoos Type C" href="https://www.worldstandards.eu/nl/elektriciteit/soorten-stekkers/c/">type C</a>-, <a title="Stekker & contactdoos Type G" href="https://www.worldstandards.eu/nl/elektriciteit/soorten-stekkers/g/">G</a>-, <a title="Stekker & contactdoos Type I" href="https://www.worldstandards.eu/nl/elektriciteit/soorten-stekkers/i/">I</a>-, <a title="Stekker & contactdoos Type L" href="https://www.worldstandards.eu/nl/elektriciteit/soorten-stekkers/l/">L</a>– en <a title="Stekker & contactdoos Type N" href="https://www.worldstandards.eu/nl/elektriciteit/soorten-stekkers/n/">N-stekkers</a>), is er een reëel gevaar voor elektrocutie. De afstand tussen de stekker en de contactdoos is groot genoeg om er een (kinder)vinger tussen te krijgen, en met een theelepeltje of een haarspeld is het uiteraard al helemaal geen probleem om
