Launched in January 1944, and commissioned in March, she served in support of the <a href="/wiki/Mariana_and_Palau_Islands_campaign" title="Mariana and Palau Islands campaign">Mariana and Palau Islands campaign</a>, the <a href="/wiki/Philippines_campaign_(1944%E2%80%931945)" title="Philippines campaign (1944–1945)">Philippines campaign</a>, the <a href="/wiki/Invasion_of_Iwo_Jima" class="mw-redirect" title="Invasion of Iwo Jima">Invasion of Iwo Jima</a>, and the <a href="/wiki/Battle_of_Okinawa" title="Battle of Okinawa">Battle of Okinawa</a>. Anti-aircraft defense was provided by eight <a href="/wiki/Bofors_40_mm_Automatic_Gun_L/60" class="mw-redirect" title="Bofors 40 mm Automatic Gun L/60">40-millimeter (1.6 in) Bofors anti-aircraft guns</a> in single mounts, as well as twelve <a href="/wiki/Oerlikon_20_mm_cannon" title="Oerlikon 20 mm cannon">20-millimeter (0.79 in) Oerlikon cannons</a>, which were mounted around the perimeter of the deck. By the end of the war, <i>Casablanca</i>-class carriers had been modified to carry thirty 20–mm cannons, and the amount of 40–mm guns had been doubled to sixteen, by putting them into twin mounts. All fifty were commissioned in the span of a single year. <i>Saginaw Bay</i> was <a href="/wiki/Keel_laying" title="Keel laying">laid down</a> on 1 November 1943 under a <a href="/wiki/Maritime_Commission" class="mw-redirect" title="Maritime Commission">Maritime Commission</a> contract, MC hull 1119, by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, Vancouver, Washington. On 15 April 1944, <i>Saginaw Bay</i> loaded aircraft and their pilots from <a href="/wiki/Terminal_Island" title="Terminal Island">Terminal Island</a> for transport to <a href="/wiki/Territory_of_Hawaii" title="Territory of Hawaii">Hawaii</a>. She arrived at <a href="/wiki/Pearl_Harbor" title="Pearl Harbor">Pearl Harbor</a> on 21 April, where she unloaded her cargo in exchange for damaged planes, before returning to <a href="/wiki/Alameda,_California" title="Alameda, California">Alameda, California</a>. She proceeded to conduct pilot qualifications off the coast of San Diego throughout May and early June, during which an FM-2 fighter crashed into the sea, killing its pilot. She joined "Taffy 1", along with 12 other escort carriers, under the command of Rear Admiral <a href="/wiki/Thomas_L._Sprague" title="Thomas L. Sprague">Thomas L. Sprague</a>. "Taffy 1" was assigned the task of guarding the southeast entrance into <a href="/wiki/Leyte_Gulf" title="Leyte Gulf">Leyte Gulf</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014128_13-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014128-13"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>13<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> On 14 October, the task group departed, guarding troop transports along the way, arriving within Leyte Gulf by 20 October. As the <a href="/wiki/Imperial_Japanese_Navy" title="Imperial Japanese Navy">Japanese Fleet</a> closed in for a decisive engagement on 24 October, <i>Saginaw Bay</i> and <a href="/wiki/USS_Chenango_(CVE-28)" title="USS Chenango (CVE-28)"><i>Chenango</i></a> transferred much of their aircraft contingent to other carriers.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014142_14-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014142-14"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>14<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> She then retired to <a href="/wiki/Morotai" class="mw-redirect" title="Morotai">Morotai</a> for replacement aircraft, missing the ensuing <a href="/wiki/Battle_off_Samar" title="Battle off Samar">Battle off Samar</a>. She rejoined her task unit on 28 October with a new aircraft contingent, just as it started to retire back to Manus.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEDANFS2016_9-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEDANFS2016-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEMcCarty3_15-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEMcCarty3-15"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>15<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p><i>Saginaw Bay</i> was anchored in Seeadler Harbor on 10 November when the <a href="/wiki/Ammunition_ship" title="Ammunition ship">ammunition ship</a> <a href="/wiki/USS_Mount_Hood_(AE-11)" title="USS Mount Hood (AE-11)"><i>Mount Hood</i></a> underwent a catastrophic explosion. She suffered only minor damage from the blast and resulting tidal wave. During her layover, she was taken into <a href="/wiki/Dry_dock" title="Dry dock">dry dock</a> for repairs. From 14 December to the 21st, she underwent exercises in preparation for amphibious landings at <a href="/wiki/Lingayen" title="Lingayen">Lingayen</a>. On 2 January 1945, her task group departed Manus, escorting transports, arriving at <a href="/wiki/Lingayen_Gulf" title="Lingayen Gulf">Lingayen Gulf</a> just in time to support the landings on 9 January.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014309_16-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014309-16"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>16<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> On 10 January, she came under attack from two Japanese bombers, who dropped bombs, which missed. On 14 January, a torpedo was spotted near her hull, which also missed. During this period of activity, <a href="/wiki/USS_Kitkun_Bay" title="USS Kitkun Bay"><i>Kitkun Bay</i></a> was heavily damaged by a kamikaze, and <a href="/wiki/USS_Ommaney_Bay" title="USS Ommaney Bay"><i>Ommaney Bay</i></a> was sunk by one, complicating the task group's efforts to provide air support. Efforts were also hampered by heavy seas, which made landings on her flight deck precarious. On 21 January, she retired from supporting the landings, steaming back to <a href="/wiki/Ulithi" title="Ulithi">Ulithi</a>, in preparation for the landings upon <a href="/wiki/Iwo_Jima" title="Iwo Jima">Iwo Jima</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEDANFS2016_9-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEDANFS2016-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEMcCarty4–6_17-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEMcCarty4–6-17"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>17<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>On 23 January, she participated in a rehearsal of the Iwo Jima landings in Ulithi. On 10 February, her task group departed Ulithi en route to Iwo Jima, making a stop at <a href="/wiki/Saipan" class="mw-redirect" title="Saipan">Saipan</a> along the way. On 19 February, she supported the landings and provided air support until 11 March. During operations, the carrier task group was constantly harried by kamikazes. Her crew witnessed the escort carrier <a href="/wiki/USS_Bismarck_Sea" title="USS Bismarck Sea"><i>Bismarck Sea</i></a> get hit by two kamikazes, before sinking from the resulting blaze.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014331_18-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014331-18"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>18<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> On 11 March, she departed from Iwo Jima bound for Ulithi, with Japanese forces still entrenched within the northern half of the island.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEDANFS2016_9-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEDANFS2016-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEMcCarty7_19-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEMcCarty7-19"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>19<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>On 14 March, she arrived back at Ulithi, where Captain Robert Goldthwaite assumed command. <i>Saginaw Bay</i> was quickly returned into action, departing for <a href="/wiki/Okinawa_Prefecture" title="Okinawa Prefecture">Okinawa</a> on 21 March, arriving on 24 March. There, she immediately began operations in preparation for the landings, which proceeded until 29 April. On 2 April, her anti-aircraft guns shot down a Japanese plane which dove towards her, while she was loading ammunition within <a href="/wiki/Kerama_Islands" title="Kerama Islands">Kerama Retto Harbor</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014356_20-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-FOOTNOTEY'Blood2014356-20"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>20<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> Throughout the battle, her aircraft claimed eleven Japanese planes. On 29 April, she was ordered back to the United States, making stops at <a href="/wiki/Guam" title="Guam">Guam</a>, Pearl Harbor, arriving at <a href="/wiki/San_Francisco" title="San Francisco">San Francisco</a> on 22 May, where she underwent repairs. After repairs were finished, she then proceeded down to San Diego, where she delivered planes to Guam, returning on 20 August. On 14 September, she departed Hawaii, making stops at Guiuan Roadstead, Samar, and San Pedro Bay, Leyte, where she took on servicemen. She then returned to San Francisco. She arrived on 23 February for inactivation, and she was subsequently decommissioned on 19 June. She was assigned to the Boston Group of the U.S. <a href="/wiki/Atlantic_Reserve_Fleet" class="mw-redirect" title="Atlantic Reserve Fleet">Atlantic Reserve Fleet</a>. On 12 June 1955, she was reclassified as <b>CVHE-82</b>, but she was never converted. On 1 March 1959, she was struck from the navy list and sold to Louis Simmons on 27 November.
