Si lo Barroco estaba al servicio del poder absolutista, el Rococó está al servicio de la aristocracia y la burguesía. El artista deja de ser un servidor del poder y trabaja con más libertad, iniciándose en el mercado del arte. Pasa a ser un arte al servicio de la comodidad, el lujo y la fiesta. Las escenas de su pintura recogen este nuevo estilo de vida. Consigue su máximo esplendor en la década de 1730. Su fin se inicia en torno al 1760, cuando personajes del nivel de Voltaire y Jacques-François Blondel extienden la crítica sobre la superficialidad y la degeneración del arte. Blondel, en particular, se lamentó de la «increíble mezcla de conchas, dragones, cañas, palmas y plantas» del arte contemporáneo. En 1780 deja de estar de moda en Francia y es reemplazado por el orden y la seriedad del estilo Neoclásico, impulsado por Jacques-Louis David. Se mantuvo popular fuera de las grandes capitales y en Italia hasta la segunda fase del Neoclásico, cuando el llamado estilo Imperio se impone gracias al impulso del gobierno napoleónico. Un renovado interés por el Rococó aparece entre 1820 y 1870. Inglaterra es la primera en revalorar el estilo Luis XIV, que es como se denominaba erróneamente al comienzo. Con esta moda, se llegaron a pagar cifras importantes para comprar objetos Rococó de segunda mano que se podían encontrar en París. En Francia, sólo artistas importantes como Delacroix y mecenas como la emperatriz Eugenia redescubren el valor de la gracia y de la ligereza aplicada al arte y al diseño.-CARACTERÍSTICAS: La pintura es ante todo decorativa; Se decoran paredes y techos mediante grandes frescos de las casas de la nobleza y de la burguesía, por lo que el cuadro se adaptaba a los espacios de las casas. Se mantiene la pintura al óleo y se populariza como medio de expresión la pintura al pastel, (esto es, dibujo en color sobre una hoja de papel). La pincelada era fina, no suele por lo general apreciarse. En cuanto al cromatismo, es una pintura muy colorista; se prefieren los colores vivos, luminosos, suaves y claros. Hay un esfuerzo consciente por evitar las sombras, prefiriendo la luz. Predominan las formas curvilíneas, las inspiradas en la naturaleza, en la mitología, en la belleza de los cuerpos desnudos, y especialmente en los temas galantes y amorosos. Las figuras son jóvenes, idealizadas, graciosas. Es un arte básicamente mundano, sin influencias religiosas, que trata temas de la vida diaria y de las relaciones humanas. La escenas mitológicas se vuelven galantes, prefiriéndose representaciones idílicas de la diosa Venus y mitos relacionados con el amor. En semejantes obras a menudo se representaban comidas sobre la hierba de personajes aristocráticos y aventuras amorosas y cortesanas. Se recuperaron personajes mitológicos que se entremezclan en las escenas, dotándolas de sensualidad, alegría y frescura. El género del paisaje se renueva, incluyendo paisajes urbanos. Se incluyen en los panoramas urbanos pequeñas figuras, dando lugar al llamado «Paisaje con figuras». Se cultivó extensamente el retrato, un retrato no idealizado sino por lo general más bien cotidiano y sencillo, teniendo como comitentes ya no sólo a la corte, sino también a la burguesía. Los personajes son representados con mucha elegancia, basada en la artificialidad de la vida de palacio y de los ambientes cortesanos, reflejando una imagen amable de la sociedad en transformación. Se prestaba especial atención a las vestimentas, pues en sus formas debía reflejarse la moda; los tejidos se representaban con minuciosidad para transmitir con precisión las cualidades táctiles de la tela; se ponía cuidado en representar fielmente los ornamentos (cintas, flores, lazos, o plumas). Es un estilo que busca reflejar lo que es agradable, refinado, exótico y sensual. Desaparece así el dramatismo que caracteriza a la pintura barroca. Es desenvuelto y jovial. Apela a los sentidos, al sentimiento y la emoción, más que a la razón.
