The name "Bar-sabbas" is Aramaic in origin, meaning "son of the Sabbath" or "son of rest."

1. Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus):

Joseph Barsabbas, also referred to as Justus, is mentioned in the Book of Acts as one of the candidates considered to replace Judas Iscariot as an apostle. After Judas's betrayal and subsequent death, the early church sought to fill the vacancy among the Twelve Apostles. Acts 1:23-26 records this event: "So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. And they prayed, 'Lord, You know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two You have chosen to take up this ministry and apostleship, which Judas abandoned to go to his rightful place.' Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles."

Joseph Barsabbas was evidently a respected member of the early Christian community, having been with Jesus from the time of His baptism by John until His ascension. Although he was not chosen to be one of the Twelve, his inclusion as a candidate indicates his significant standing among the disciples.

2. Judas Barsabbas:

Another individual named Barsabbas is Judas Barsabbas, who appears in Acts 15. He is described as a leading figure among the brethren and was chosen to accompany Paul and Barnabas to Antioch with a letter from the Jerusalem Council. This council was convened to address the issue of whether Gentile converts to Christianity needed to observe Jewish law. Acts 15:22 states, "Then the apostles and elders, with the whole church, decided to select men from among them and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. They chose Judas (called Barsabbas) and Silas, two leaders among the brothers."

Judas Barsabbas, along with Silas, was entrusted with delivering the council's decision, which affirmed that Gentile believers were not required to follow the entirety of the Mosaic Law, except for a few specific prohibitions. Acts 15:32 further notes, "Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the brothers."

In summary, the name Barsabbas is associated with two early Christian figures who were both involved in significant events in the nascent church. Joseph Barsabbas was a candidate for apostleship, while Judas Barsabbas played a crucial role in communicating the decisions of the Jerusalem Council, helping to shape the early church's understanding of Gentile inclusion. Both men exemplify the dedication and leadership present in the early Christian community.
Greek
923. Barsabbas -- "son of Sabba," Barsabbas, the surname of two ...
... 922, 923. Barsabbas. 924 .
