and when he saw<MH7200> <i>them,</i> he ran<MH7323> from the tent<MH168> door<MH6607> to meet<MH7122> them and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to the ground<MH776>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>and said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>My Lord<MH113>, if<MH518> now<MH4994> I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> in Your sight<MH5869>, please<MH4994> do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>pass<MH5674a> Your servant<MH5650> by. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Please<MH4994> let a little<MH4592> water<MH4325> be brought<MH3947> and wash<MH7364> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>your feet<MH7272>, and make<MH8172> yourselves<MH8172> comfortable<MH8172> under<MH8478> the tree<MH6086>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>and I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>bring<MH3947> a piece<MH6595> of bread<MH3899>, so that you may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>refresh<MH5582> yourselves<MH3820>; after<MH310> that you may go<MH5674a> on<MH5674a>, since<MH3588, 5921, 3651> you have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>visited<MH5674a> your servant<MH5650>.” And they said<MH559>, “So<MH3651> do<MH6213a> as you have said<MH1696>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Abraham<MH85> hurried<MH4116> into the tent<MH168> to Sarah<MH8283>, and said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>Quickly<MH4116>, prepare<MH4116> three<MH7969> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>measures<MH5429> of fine<MH5560> flour<MH7058, 5560>, knead<MH3888> <i>it,</i> and make<MH6213a> bread<MH5692> cakes<MH5692>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Abraham<MH85> also ran<MH7323> to the herd<MH1241>, and took<MH3947> a tender<MH7390> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>choice<MH2896a> calf<MH1121, 1241> and gave<MH5414> <i>it</i> to the servant<MH5288>, and he hurried<MH4116> to prepare<MH6213a> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He took<MH3947> curds<MH2529> and milk<MH2461> and the calf<MH1121, 1241> which<MH834> he had prepared<MH6213a>, and set<MH5414> <i>it</i> before<MH6440> them; and he was standing<MH5975> by them under<MH8478> the tree<MH6086> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>as they ate<MH398>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559> to him, “Where<MH335> is your wife<MH802> Sarah<MH8283>?” And he said<MH559>, “There<MH2009>, in the tent<MH168>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, “I will certainly<MH7725> return<MH7725> to you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>at this time<MH6256> next<MH2416a> year<MH2416a>; and behold<MH2009>, your wife<MH802> Sarah<MH8283> will have a son<MH1121>.” And Sarah<MH8283> was listening<MH8085> at the tent<MH168> door<MH6607>, which<MH1931> was behind<MH310> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now Abraham<MH85> and Sarah<MH8283> were old<MH2205>, advanced<MH935> in age<MH3117>; Sarah<MH8283> was past<MH2308> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>childbearing<MH734, 802>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So Sarah<MH8283> laughed<MH6711> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>to herself<MH7130>, saying<MH559>, “After<MH310> I have become<MH1086> old<MH1086>, am I to have<MH1961> pleasure<MH5734b>, my lord<MH113> being<MH2204> old<MH2204> also?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Abraham<MH85>, “Why<MH4100> did Sarah<MH8283> laugh<MH6711>, saying<MH559>, ‘Shall I actually<MH637, 552> give<MH3205> birth<MH3205> <i>to a child,</i> when I am<MH2204> <i>so</i> old<MH2204>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Is<MH6381> anything<MH1697> too<MH4480> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>difficult<MH6381> for the LORD<MH3068>? At the appointed<MH4150> time<MH4150> I will return<MH7725> to you, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>at this<MH2416a> time<MH6256> next<MH2416a> year<MH2416a>, and Sarah<MH8283> will have a son<MH1121>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Sarah<MH8283> denied<MH3584> <i>it,</i> however, saying<MH559>, “I did not laugh<MH6711>”; for she was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>. And He said<MH559>, “No<MH3808>, but you did laugh<MH6711>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> rose<MH6965> up<MH6965> from there<MH8033>, and looked<MH8259> down<MH8259> toward<MH5921, 6440> Sodom<MH5467>; and Abraham<MH85> was walking<MH1980> with them to send<MH7971> them off. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>The LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “Shall I hide<MH3680> from Abraham<MH85> what<MH834> I am about to do<MH6213a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>since Abraham<MH85> will certainly<MH1961> become<MH1961> a great<MH1419> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>mighty<MH6099> nation<MH1471>, and in him all<MH3605> the nations<MH1471> of the earth<MH776> will be blessed<MH1288>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>For I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>chosen<MH3045> him, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> he may command<MH6680> his children<MH1121> and his household<MH1004> after<MH310> him to keep<MH8104> the way<MH1870> of the LORD<MH3068> by doing<MH6213a> righteousness<MH6666> and justice<MH4941>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> the LORD<MH3068> may bring<MH935> upon Abraham<MH85> what<MH834> He has spoken<MH1696> about<MH5921> him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “The outcry<MH2201> of Sodom<MH5467> and Gomorrah<MH6017> is<MH7231> indeed<MH3588> great<MH7231>, and their sin<MH2403b> is<MH3513> exceedingly<MH3966> grave<MH3513>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>I will go<MH3381> down<MH3381> now<MH4994> and see<MH7200> whether they have done<MH6213a> entirely<MH3605> as the outcry<MH6818>, which has come<MH935> to Me <i>indicates;</i> and if<MH518> not, I will know<MH3045>.” <p class="hdg">Abraham Appeals for Sodom</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then the men<MH376> turned<MH6437> away<MH6437> from there<MH8033> and went<MH1980> toward Sodom<MH5467>, while Abraham<MH85> was still<MH5750> standing<MH5975> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Abraham<MH85> approached<MH5066> and said<MH559>, “Will You indeed<MH637> sweep<MH5595> away<MH5595> the righteous<MH6662> with the wicked<MH7563>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Suppose<MH194> there<MH3426> are<MH3426> fifty<MH2572> righteous<MH6662> people<MH6662> within<MH8432> the city<MH5892b>; will You indeed<MH637> sweep<MH5595> <i>it</i> away<MH5595> and not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>spare<MH5375> the place<MH4725> for the sake<MH4616> of the fifty<MH2572> righteous<MH6662> who<MH834> are in it? <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Far<MH2486> be it from You to do<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>such<MH2088> a thing<MH1697>, to kill<MH4191> the righteous<MH6662> with the wicked<MH7563>, so that the righteous<MH6662> and the wicked<MH7563> are <i>treated</i> alike. Far<MH2486> be it from You! Shall not the Judge<MH8199> of all<MH3605> the earth<MH776> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>deal<MH6213a> justly<MH4941>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559>, “If<MH518> I find<MH4672> in Sodom<MH5467> fifty<MH2572> righteous<MH6662> within<MH8432> the city<MH5892b>, then I will <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[w]</a></span>spare<MH5375> the entire<MH3605> place<MH4725> on their account<MH5668>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And Abraham<MH85> replied<MH6030a>, “Now<MH4994> behold<MH2009>, I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[x]</a></span>ventured<MH2974> to speak<MH1696> to the Lord<MH136>, although I am <i>only</i> dust<MH6083> and ashes<MH665>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Suppose<MH194> the fifty<MH2572> righteous<MH6662> are lacking<MH2637> five<MH2568>, will You destroy<MH7843> the entire<MH3605> city<MH5892b> because of five<MH2568>?” And He said<MH559>, “I will not destroy<MH7843> <i>it</i> if<MH518> I find<MH4672> forty-five<MH705, 2568> there<MH8033>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And he spoke<MH1696> to Him yet<MH5750> again<MH3254> and said<MH559>, “Suppose<MH194> forty<MH705> are found<MH4672> there<MH8033>?” And He said<MH559>, “I will not do<MH6213a> <i>it</i> on account<MH5668> of the forty<MH705>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Then he said<MH559>, “Oh<MH4994> may<MH4994> the Lord<MH136> not be<MH2734> angry<MH2734>, and I shall speak<MH1696>; suppose<MH194> thirty<MH7970> are found<MH4672> there<MH8033>?” And He said<MH559>, “I will not do<MH6213a> <i>it</i> if<MH518> I find<MH4672> thirty<MH7970> there<MH8033>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/18-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>And he said<MH559>, “Now<MH4994> behold<MH2009>, I have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[y]</a></span>ventured<MH2974> to speak<MH1696> to the Lord<MH136>;
