It was customary to provide for guests promptly and generously. This scene occurs near the oaks of Mamre, where Abraham had settled. The tent signifies a nomadic lifestyle, common for patriarchs like Abraham.
and said to Sarah,
Sarah, Abraham's wife, plays a crucial role in this narrative. Her involvement highlights the partnership in hospitality and the domestic responsibilities typical for women of that era. Sarah's presence in the story also foreshadows her later role in the fulfillment of God's promise of a son.
“Quick! Prepare three seahs of fine flour,
A seah is a unit of measure, approximately 7-8 quarts or liters, indicating a large quantity of flour. This abundance underscores the importance of the visitors and Abraham's desire to honor them. Fine flour suggests a high-quality ingredient, reflecting the best offering to guests, paralleling the offerings made to God.
knead it, and bake some bread.”
The process of kneading and baking bread was labor-intensive, emphasizing the effort and care put into serving the guests. Bread is a staple food, symbolizing sustenance and fellowship. This act of hospitality prefigures the breaking of bread in the New Testament, where Jesus often shared meals with His disciples, symbolizing communion and fellowship.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Abraham
The patriarch of the Hebrew people, who is visited by three men, one of whom is the Lord. It is still usual on the arrival of a stranger to make this hasty preparation for his entertainment, the ordinary meal even of a wealthy sheik consisting of flour and some camels' milk boiled together. Cakes such as those here described, baked amid the embers on the hot hearth-stone, are considered a delicacy (<a href="/1_kings/19-6.htm" title="And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baked on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. Flesh is seldom eaten; but if a traveller arrives, sweet milk and rice are added to the meal, and if he be a person of distinction a lamb or kid is killed. Abraham's calf, "tender and good," shows that he regarded his visitors as persons of more than ordinary high rank; and the quantity of food cooked seems to show that the three travellers had numerous attendants. The calf would be cut into small portions, and a meal like this is, we are told, got ready in a very short time.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 6. - And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures.
