This paper examines the human body in art contexts where biotechnology plays a relevant role in the generation of new conceptualizations around the human body topic. Thus, re-contextualized in social and cultural spheres and technical terms, the body will become redesigned, revamped, or augmented through the use of technological advances ranging from plastic surgery to robotic prosthetics. The human body is our vehicle of direct interaction with the environment. Its modification, alteration or expansion implies a redefinition of the existing limits between our corporality and the environment itself. Not only in the physical sense, but metaphysical and social. Hence, the introduced artists and strategies blur these limits and establish new relations through the body as a physical and social entity. In the search of new boundaries far beyond socio-cultural and natural limitations, they will reach new social, perceptual and conceptual statuses, far beyond aesthetic practices, focusing on the In these discussions, it has been instrumentalized, domesticized, and even cursed or glorified, mostly through the dualisms such as mind/body, soul/body and self/other. Posthuman thought criticizes this dualistic comprehension for the body and proposes a post-dualistic understanding. This post-dualism blurs the distinctions starting from the ones between the human and machine, human and animal for a posthuman body. This study approaches the posthuman body as a post-dualistic entity as well. Through a qualitative research method, the academic literature was reviewed concerning the prominent debates on these issues and discussed the findings with the practical works of art. Primarily, Donna Haraway's arguments on the body with the notion of cyborg and Katherine N. Hayles' concept of posthuman were examined for building a basis of the research. At the intersection of these concepts, Deleuze & Guattari's notion of becoming and becoming-machine notion were explored. Becoming-machine not only relates to Body without Organs (BwO), but also emerges as a developed concept for posthuman in Rosi Braidotti's texts too. Braidotti interprets this Deleuzian concept in a critical posthuman perspective and proposes a new notion as Organs without Bodies. This concept connects to BwO with its criticism on organism and also benefits from Foucault's arguments for biopower and biopolitics. So, Braidotti discusses Foucault's arguments on modernity to develop a criticism on biotechnological capitalism. Therefore, this research aims to discuss these interrelated critical subjects through biotechnological manifestations in contemporary art. In this scope, the purpose of this study is to interpret critical issues on the body from an interdisciplinary point of view and contribute to the academic literature with an alternative discussion mentioning the post-dualistic possibilities of the posthuman body. This has led some scholars to argue that we are creating technologized, cyborg bodies. However, these technologies have also enabled us to correct perceived cultural flaws in the body. This article explores the nature of the body through the lens of posthumanism, examining ways that individuals attempt to reshape their bodies through cosmetic surgery and other forms of body modification. Specifically, this article examines the practice of hymen restoration, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge’s artistic endeavours in cosmetic surgery and Stelarc’s cybernetic experimentations. These cases yield three potential visions of the body: the body must be restored; bodies must be unified; and the body must evolve. Such visions have consequences; the ways in which the body is rhetorically constructed influence how people choose to alter their own bodies. The biotechnological reproduction of life, bodies and cells, as well as AI-equipped machines, has become normal and sometimes even technically routine in contemporary societies. The biotechnologization of society and the engineering of life have also significantly influenced contemporary art fields, practices and projects. The crucial analytical scope for this article is a specific biotechnological art field – bio art. Bio art includes the works of artists who are intrigued by working with living or semi-living tissues and biotechnologies. Using specific artworks, mainly by Louis Bec, Heather Dewey-Hagborg, and Biononymous, the text investigates current forms of power over life – biopower – that imagine, classify, and govern our societies today, even on molecular and genetic levels. The text analyzes artistic reflections of the processes by which people are governed mainly as the derivatives of the body, biological and genetic data sets. Thinking through these practices can tell us something of the concerns and complexities of the people who practice them. This collection addresses the body as a technical apparatus of aesthetic performance and ethical commitments. Each of the papers work through intrusions in and extensions out of the body in order to understand the sociocultural genesis of the body as its boundaries are negotiated, contested, and blurred. Ethnographic accounts exploring intrusions into the body such as artful body modifications, medical interventions, and cyborgian movements of enhancement are taken alongside extensions out of the body into institutional, architectural, and ecological environments. In so doing, this short collection of papers seeks to understand how people partner themselves with techniques and technologies of and on the body to form new subjectivities in their aesthetic engagement with internal and external realities. It furthermore helps to fill a need within interdisciplinary discussions of the body to think through the human body as a site of technical engagement enmeshed within complex negotiations of value and meta-values. In this way it defines these delimitations of the body as complex bioethical issues. This special issue is the result of two symposia: one held at University College London in July 2015; the other, in Denver, Colorado as part of the programme of the American Anthropological Association Annual Meeting in December 2015. As such, this collection is the product of a collaborative effort on the part of the authors and associated colleagues (most notably David Jeevendrampillai, with whom we organized the original July symposium). Together we have sought to understand how people ally themselves with technology, render the body a sited technology, use bodily techniques, and extend themselves within medical, urban, and religious environments to form new subjectivities. This collection pulls together research exploring a range of engagements with the body such as: artful body modifications, medical interventions, cyborgian movements of enhancement, and interactions with the 'deceased' body, as well as the potentiality of objects and artefacts within the wider material ecology external to the body to act as a sort of 'living prosthetic', oftentimes linked to material-discursive claims of ownership and control. The concept of technological progress as a part of a linear perception of history that may exceed its limits is analysed, and the need for re-evaluating the concept of progress is emphasised. The role of biotechnology in technological progress, as well as the potential of biotechnology to change our perception of progress by applying natural processes in most basic terms, is highlighted. The relationship between art and technology is examined and shows that in some cases art explores technological advances before they occur. The work and the views of body artists Stelarc and Orlan are discussed, as well as those of some other artists. Bioethics is introduced as a scholarly way to examine biotechnological development, and it's revealed that not much has been done in respect to issues that are not directly connected to humans. This area seems to be where design can come in and explore the prospects of living objects and their manipulation.
