The psalmist, traditionally identified as David, is expressing a sense of anticipation and longing. In the broader context of <a href="/psalms/39.htm">Psalm 39</a>, David is grappling with the brevity and frailty of human life. This question underscores a shift from self-reliance to divine reliance, a theme prevalent throughout the Psalms. The rhetorical question suggests that the psalmist has exhausted all earthly options and is now turning to God as the ultimate source of hope and fulfillment. This mirrors the human condition of seeking meaning beyond the temporal, aligning with <a href="/ecclesiastes/1-2.htm">Ecclesiastes 1:2</a>, where life is described as "meaningless" without God.<p><b>My hope is in You.</b><br>This declaration of hope in God is a central tenet of faith, emphasizing trust in divine providence over human understanding. The Hebrew word for "hope" (תִּקְוָה, tikvah) conveys a sense of expectation and waiting. This hope is not passive but active, rooted in the character and promises of God. Throughout the Old Testament, hope in God is linked to His covenant faithfulness, as seen in <a href="/jeremiah/29-11.htm">Jeremiah 29:11</a>, where God promises a future and a hope. In the New Testament, this hope is fulfilled in Jesus Christ, who is described as our "living hope" in <a href="/1_peter/1-3.htm">1 Peter 1:3</a>. The psalmist's reliance on God prefigures the Christian understanding of salvation and eternal life through Christ, who embodies the ultimate hope for humanity.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/d/david.htm">David</a></b><br>The author of <a href="/bsb/psalms/39.htm">Psalm 39</a>, David is expressing his deep introspection and reliance on God amidst life's fleeting nature.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/t/the_lord.htm">The Lord (Yahweh)</a></b><br>The central figure in whom David places his hope, representing God's eternal and unchanging nature.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/h/human_life.htm">Human Life</a></b><br>The broader context of <a href="/bsb/psalms/39.htm">Psalm 39</a> reflects on the brevity and frailty of human life, prompting David's reliance on God.<br><br>4. <b><a href="/topical/i/israel.htm">Israel</a></b><br>As the chosen people of God, Israel's history of waiting on the Lord provides a backdrop for understanding the communal aspect of hope in God.<br><br>5. <b><a href="/topical/t/the_psalmist's_lament.htm">The Psalmist's Lament</a></b><br>The event of David's lamentation and prayer, seeking understanding and expressing trust in God.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/t/the_nature_of_hope.htm">The Nature of Hope</a></b><br>Biblical hope is not wishful thinking but a confident expectation based on God's promises.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/w/waiting_on_the_lord.htm">Waiting on the Lord</a></b><br>Waiting is an active process of trust and patience, not passive resignation.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/the_brevity_of_life.htm">The Brevity of Life</a></b><br>Recognizing life's fleeting nature should drive us to place our hope in the eternal God.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/g/god_as_our_anchor.htm">God as Our Anchor</a></b><br>In times of uncertainty, God remains the steadfast anchor for our souls.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/l/living_with_purpose.htm">Living with Purpose</a></b><br>Our hope in God should motivate us to live purposefully, aligning our lives with His will.<div class="vheading2">Lists and Questions</div><a href="/top10/lessons_from_psalm_39.htm">Top 10 Lessons from Psalm 39</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/does_psalm_39_7_dismiss_science.htm">Psalm 39:7 – When David looks only to God for hope, does this dismiss practical or scientific solutions? </a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/what's_the_bible's_view_on_hope.htm">What is the Bible's perspective on hope?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/psalm_39__does_it_conflict_with_human_purpose.htm">Psalm 39 – Does this portrayal of life’s futility conflict with other Bible passages affirming human purpose and value?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/how_can_i_align_my_heart_to_revere_you.htm">What is the Bible's perspective on waiting?</a><a name="commentary" id="commentary"></a><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/ellicott/psalms/39.htm">Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers</a></div>(7) <span class= "bld">And now, Lord . . .</span>--"If such is man's condition, what," says the psalmist, "is my expectation?" We seem to hear the deep sigh with which the words are uttered; and we must remember that the poet can turn for comfort to no hope of immortality. That had not yet dawned. The thought of God's mercy, and the hope of his own moral deliverance, these form the ground of his noble elevation above the oppressive sense of human frailty. The LXX. and Vulg. give it very expressively:--<p>"And now what is my expectation? Is it not the Lord?<p>And my substance is with thee."<p><div class="vheading2"><a href="/commentaries/pulpit/psalms/39.htm">Pulpit Commentary</a></div><span class="cmt_sub_title">Verse 7.</span> - <span class="cmt_word">And now, Lord, what wait I for?</span> <span class="cmt_word">My hope is in thee</span>. And now - under these circumstances - human life being what it is, and all men nothing but vanity, what is my hope? what is my expectation? what am I waiting for? A cry, as it would seem, of utter despair. But when the night is darkest, day dawns. "Out of the depths" comes forth the voice of faith - "My hope is in THEE!" There is always hope in God When our father and mother forsake us, the Lord taketh us up. He will not leave us nor forsake us. So the psalmist ends his complaint by throwing himself into the arms of the Divine mercy, and unreservedly submitting himself to God's will. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/psalms/39-7.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">Now,</span><br /><span class="heb">וְעַתָּ֣ה</span> <span class="translit">(wə·‘at·tāh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Adverb<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6258.htm">Strong's 6258: </a> </span><span class="str2">At this time</span><br /><br /><span class="word">Lord,</span><br /><span class="heb">אֲדֹנָ֑י</span> <span class="translit">(’ă·ḏō·nāy)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - proper - masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_136.htm">Strong's 136: </a> </span><span class="str2">The Lord</span><br /><br /><span class="word">for what</span><br /><span class="heb">מַה־</span> <span class="translit">(mah-)</span><br /><span class="parse">Interrogative<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4100.htm">Strong's 4100: </a> </span><span class="str2">What?, what!, indefinitely what</span><br /><br /><span class="word">do I wait?</span><br /><span class="heb">קִּוִּ֣יתִי</span> <span class="translit">(qiw·wî·ṯî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Piel - Perfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_6960.htm">Strong's 6960: </a> </span><span class="str2">To bind together, collect, to expect</span><br /><br /><span class="word">My hope is</span><br /><span class="heb">תּ֝וֹחַלְתִּ֗י</span> <span class="translit">(tō·w·ḥal·tî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine singular construct | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8431.htm">Strong's 8431: </a> </span><span class="str2">Expectation</span><br /><br /><span class="word">in</span><br /><span class="heb">לְךָ֣</span> <span class="translit">(lə·ḵā)</span><br /><span class="parse">Preposition | second person masculine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/.htm">Strong's Hebrew</a> </span><span class="str2"></span><br /><br /><span class="word">You.</span><br /><span class="heb">הִֽיא׃</span> <span class="translit">(hî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Pronoun - third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_1931.htm">Strong's 1931: </a> </span><span class="str2">He, self, the same, this, that, as, are</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/psalms/39-7.htm">Psalm 39:7 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/psalms/39-7.htm">OT Poetry: Psalm 39:7 Now Lord what do I wait for?
