In Genesis 1:26-27 , it is written, "Then God said, 'Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.' So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them." This passage underscores the belief that human beings are made in the image of God, imbuing them with inherent dignity and worth.

The Sanctity of Human Life

The sanctity of human life is a central theme in Scripture. The commandment "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13) highlights the value God places on human life. Furthermore, Psalm 139:13-16 speaks to the intimate involvement of God in the creation of each person: "For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be."

Purpose and Meaning of Human Life

The Bible teaches that human life has a divine purpose. Ecclesiastes 12:13 states, "When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind." This suggests that the ultimate purpose of human life is to live in reverence to God and to follow His commandments. Additionally, Micah 6:8 provides further insight: "He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?"

The Fall and Redemption of Human Life

The narrative of the Fall in Genesis 3 describes how sin entered the world through Adam and Eve, affecting all of human life. Romans 5:12 explains, "Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so also death was passed on to all men, because all sinned." Despite this fallen state, the Bible offers a message of redemption through Jesus Christ. John 3:16 declares, "For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Eternal Perspective on Human Life

The Bible presents human life as a temporal journey with eternal implications. James 4:14 reminds us, "You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes." This transient nature of earthly life is contrasted with the promise of eternal life through faith in Christ. In John 11:25-26 , Jesus proclaims, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies. And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die."

Moral and Ethical Implications

The Bible provides guidance on how human life should be lived in accordance with God's will. The teachings of Jesus, such as the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), offer ethical instructions that emphasize love, forgiveness, and righteousness. The Apostle Paul, in Galatians 5:22-23 , describes the fruit of the Spirit as "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control," virtues that should characterize the life of a believer.

Human Life in Community

Human life is also portrayed as inherently relational. The Bible emphasizes the importance of community and relationships, as seen in the early church's practices in Acts 2:42-47 , where believers devoted themselves to fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer. The command to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:31) further underscores the communal aspect of human life, calling individuals to live in harmony and service to one another.
Topical Bible Verses
Genesis 2:7
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;
