and he brought<MH935> them to the land<MH776> of Shinar<MH8152>, to the house<MH1004> of his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>god<MH430>, and he brought<MH935> the vessels<MH3627> into the treasury<MH1004, 214> of his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>god<MH430>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then the king<MH4428> told<MH559> Ashpenaz<MH828>, the chief<MH7227b> of his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>officials<MH5631>, to bring<MH935> in<MH935> some<MH4480> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>, including some<MH4480> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>royal<MH4410> family<MH2233> and of the nobles<MH6579>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>youths<MH3206> in whom<MH834> there was no<MH369, 3605> impairment<MH3971>, who were good-looking<MH2896a, 4758>, suitable<MH7919a> for<MH7919a> instruction<MH7919a> in every<MH3605> <i>kind of</i> expertise<MH2451>, endowed<MH3045> with understanding<MH995> and discerning<MH995> knowledge<MH4093>, and who<MH834> had ability<MH3851b> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>serve<MH5975> in the king&#8217;s<MH4428> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>court<MH1964>; and <i>he ordered Ashpenaz</i> to teach<MH3925> them the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>literature<MH5612> and language<MH3956> of the Chaldeans<MH3778>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>The king<MH4428> also allotted<MH4487> for them a daily<MH3117> ration<MH1697> from the king&#8217;s<MH4428> choice<MH6598> food<MH6598> and from the wine<MH3196> which he drank<MH4960>, and <i>ordered</i> that they be educated<MH1431> for three<MH7969> years<MH8141>, at the end<MH7117> of which they were to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>enter<MH5975> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> personal<MH6440> service<MH5975, 6440>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now among them from the sons<MH1121> of Judah<MH3063> were Daniel<MH1840>, Hananiah<MH2608a>, Mishael<MH4332>, and Azariah<MH5838>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then the commander<MH8269> of the officials<MH5631> assigned<MH7760> <i>new</i> names<MH8034> to them; and to Daniel<MH1840> he assigned<MH7760> <i>the name</i> Belteshazzar<MH1095>, to Hananiah<MH2608a> Shadrach<MH7714>, to Mishael<MH4332> Meshach<MH4335>, and to Azariah<MH5838> Abed-nego<MH5664>. <p class="hdg">Daniel&#8217;s Resolve</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>But Daniel<MH1840> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>made<MH7760> up<MH7760> his mind<MH3820> that he would not defile<MH1351> himself with the king&#8217;s<MH4428> choice<MH6598> food<MH6598> or with the wine<MH3196> which he drank<MH4960>; so he sought<MH1245> <i>permission</i> from the commander<MH8269> of the officials<MH5631> that he might not defile<MH1351> himself. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now God<MH430> granted<MH5414> Daniel<MH1840> favor<MH2617a> and compassion<MH7356> in the sight<MH6440> of the commander<MH8269> of the officials<MH5631>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The commander<MH8269> of the officials<MH5631> said<MH559> to Daniel<MH1840>, &#8220;I am afraid<MH3372a> of my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>, who<MH834> has allotted<MH4487> your food<MH3978> and your drink<MH4960>; for why<MH4100> should he see<MH7200> your faces<MH6440> looking<MH2196> gaunt<MH2196> in<MH4480> comparison<MH4480> to<MH4480> the youths<MH3206> who<MH834> are your own age<MH1524b>? Then you would <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>make me forfeit<MH2325> my head<MH7218> to the king<MH4428>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But Daniel<MH1840> said<MH559> to the overseer<MH4453> whom<MH834> the commander<MH8269> of the officials<MH5631> had appointed<MH4487> over<MH5921> Daniel<MH1840>, Hananiah<MH2608a>, Mishael<MH4332>, and Azariah<MH5838>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>&#8220;Please<MH4994> put<MH5254> your servants<MH5650> to<MH5254> the<MH5254> test<MH5254> for ten<MH6235> days<MH3117>, and let us be given<MH5414> some<MH4480> vegetables<MH2235a> to eat<MH398> and water<MH4325> to drink<MH8354>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then let our appearance<MH4758> be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>examined<MH7200> in your presence<MH6440> and the appearance<MH4758> of the youths<MH3206> who<MH834> are eating<MH398> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> choice<MH6598> food<MH6598>; and deal<MH6213a> with your servants<MH5650> according to what<MH3512c> you see<MH7200>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So he listened<MH8085> to them in this<MH2088> matter<MH1697>, and put<MH5254> them to<MH5254> the<MH5254> test<MH5254> for ten<MH6235> days<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And at the end<MH7117> of ten<MH6235> days<MH3117> their appearance<MH4758> seemed<MH7200> better<MH2896a>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>they were fatter<MH1277, 1320> than<MH4480> all<MH3605> the youths<MH3206> who<MH834> had been eating<MH398> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> choice<MH6598> food<MH6598>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So the overseer<MH4453> continued<MH1961> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>withhold<MH5375> their choice<MH6598> food<MH6598> and the wine<MH3196> they were to drink<MH4960>, and kept<MH5414> giving<MH5414> them vegetables<MH2235b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And as for these<MH428> four<MH702> youths<MH3206>, God<MH430> gave<MH5414> them knowledge<MH4093> and intelligence<MH7919a> in every<MH3605> <i>kind of</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>literature<MH5612> and expertise<MH2451>; Daniel<MH1840> even understood<MH995> all<MH3605> <i>kinds of</i> visions<MH2377> and dreams<MH2472>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then at the end<MH7117> of the days<MH3117> which<MH834> the king<MH4428> had <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>specified<MH559> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>for presenting<MH935> them, the commander<MH8269> of the officials<MH5631> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>presented<MH935> them before<MH6440> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5019>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/daniel/1-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> talked<MH1696> with them, and out of them all<MH3605> not one was found<MH4672> like Daniel<MH1840>, Hananiah<MH2608a>, Mishael<MH4332>, and Azariah<MH5838>;
