Garnets grew during prograde metamorphism toward regional amphibolite-facies peak conditions, and a mylonitic foliation formed during and after garnet growth. Garnet crystals show typical prograde zoning with no visible traces of a relict garnet generation. They do show various degrees of retrogression. While some crystals are perfectly euhedral with only minor chemical alteration along cracks, others are elongated in the foliation and either grew in this shape or were deformed. Six garnet splits were separated from crushed single crystals and one from a crushed bulk sample. Individual three-point garnet-hornblende-whole rock ages scatter between 2.603 ± 0.018 Ga and 2.432 ± 0.059 Ga for single garnets. The garnet split from the bulk sample defines an age of 2.463 ± 0.031 Ga, the data point farthest from the regression line for all data points (2.551 ± 0.074 Ga, mean square of weighted deviates = 25). We interpret these data to indicate partial retrogression of a Neoarchean garnet population not significantly older than the oldest obtained three-point age. Well-preserved garnet zoning, regional peak temperatures well below the closing temperature of the Lu-Hf system, and the small scatter of Lu-Hf ages preclude an interpretation of the observed The Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd garnet dating of mafic eclogite and metapelitic gneisses provides a new set of precise ages on Variscan syn-collisional metamorphism in the Western Carpathians. The published P-T conditions document peak eclogite facies metamorphism at 15-17 kbar and 650-695 °C, whereas garnet-sillimanite gneisses reached their climax at 5-6 kbar and 650-700 °C. Lu-Hf bulk garnet dating gave the precise ages of 354.5 ± 1.2 Ma for eclogite, while the ages of 346.7 ± 1.0 Ma and 345.9 ± 1.0 Ma were determined for metapelites. The Sm-Nd dating of the same garnet fractions from metapelites gave the ages 344.9 ± 2.6 and 345.4 ± 9.3 Ma. Both the Sm-Nd and Lu-Hf ages are indistinguishable within their uncertainties, and so, when considering the major and trace element zonation in garnet, we interpret them as dating the time of prograde garnet crystallization. The data therefore indicates high-pressure, eclogite facies metamorphism in the Tournaisian, and medium-pressure metamorphism in Visean times. We interpret the eclogite facies metamorphism as a record of initial Variscan continental collision in the Early Carboniferous. A high proportion of garnets and chromites in these rocks plot in the diamond facies fields on Cr2O3-CaO and Cr2O3-MgO wt. % plots respectively. However, it has also been found that many Cr-rich assemblages are clinopyroxene-bearing (lherzolitic) as well as harzburgitic (i.e. forming a range of chromite-garnet peridotite assemblages). Many samples have garnets with inclusions of serpentine ± chromite (+ clinopyroxene in lherzolitic samples) whose arrangement are sometimes indicative of exsolution or annealed exsolution textures. Initial bulk REE patterns were calculated for the pre-exsolution, pre-metasomatism, high-Cr garnets. The patterns found are humped for harzburgitic samples and relatively flat for lherzolitic ones. These appear to be closely linked to the concentration of Ca in garnet indicative of a single-stage formation process for the humped profiles. The profiles were later modified by exsolution of pyroxenes (with a clear link between Ca content of garnet and the garnet/clinopyroxene partition coefficients) and, in a few cases, by metasomatism causing a zonation of REE. Most of the garnets have strongly developed zonation patterns which are a result of diffusion towards the matrix (external zonation) followed by zonation towards inclusions (internal zonation). Cr-Al and Mg-Ca inter-diffuse in both types of zonation; Ti may also be strongly zoned, whereas Fe is not distinctly zoned in any sample. External zonation may be divided into ‘P-T re-equilibration’ and ‘metasomatic’ types, where the former type conforms to down-P-T garnet-spinel transition reaction simulations and the latter does not. All internal zonations conform to down P-T reaction simulations. All the zonation profiles conform well to diffusion controlled reaction models. External P-T re-equilibration is modelled to have occurred on an order of magnitude greater timescale than internal zonation (~5 Ma compared to ~0.5 Ma using DMg = 10-20m2/s). Metasomatic zonation occurs over the longest diffusion distances and is modelled to have timescales up to 20 Ma. Based upon the geometries of chemical heterogeneity in the minerals analysed, a sequence of events has been proposed for the evolution of the Newlands and Bobbejaan samples: (1) Earliest known mineralogy. There is little evidence for the events prior to and during this stage. However, the modal mineralogy is postulated to have been more garnet and olivine-rich than seen in the samples and the crystals more chemically homogeneous. The P and T in samples are modelled to have the highest Ps and Ts of all stages (potentially > 65kb and > 1350°C). (2) Exsolution. This stage represents the initiation of an event which significantly lowered P and T where spinel and pyroxene exsolved from garnet. (3a) External zonation - P-T re-equilibration and metasomatism. These events are contiguous with stage 2 and P-T estimates for this stage indicate further lowering of P and T. This is accompanied by modification of a few samples by the infiltration of metasomatic fluid. (3b) Internal zonation – P-T re-equilibration. This stage represents the final lowering of P and T, yielding final P-T estimates on clinopyroxene inclusion-garnet boundaries of 38-50 kb and 900-1150°C. These P-T estimates place samples plot on a relatively cool continental steady state geotherm. (4) Kimberlite eruption. The initial formation of the garnet-rich rock types with their (calculated) highly chromian composition and particular initial REE compositions appears to be related to a major depletion event with subsequent burial. Differential interaction with a CO2-bearing fluid would generate the range of harzburgitic and lherzolitic compositions found. However it is acknowledged that this is difficult to determine and constrain because of the lack of preservation of evidence prior to Stage 2.The down-P-T event has a similar timescale and associated uplift rate to be related to continent-continent collision according to the timescales for diffusion. The contemporaneous metasomatism leads to postulation that the event may have been related to the continental accretion of the eastern and western parts of the Kaapvaal craton in the late Archaean. In terms of the relation to diamond, it was found that samples with high-Cr harzburgitic garnets tended to yield P-T estimates that were most substantially into the diamond stability field based upon the Cr-Al partitioning between garnet and spinel and also modelling the samples using the computer programme known as ‘Perplex’. Clinopyroxene-bearing samples (i.e. those with a bulk rock composition higher in Ca) tended to indicate higher temperatures of equilibration. Cr-spinels from the harzburgitic paragenesis have higher Mg and lower Ti than the lherzolitic Cr-spinels, but overlapping Cr compositions at high Cr and may be differentiated on Cr-Mg and Cr-Ti class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">The tectonic history of the Prince Rupert area is marked by profound crustal thickening from thrusting that produced inverted metamorphic field gradients and transpression in crustal-scale shear zones. Syn-tectonic garnet in the Prince Rupert area has Lu–Hf ages of 102.6 ± 3.7 Ma and 108.3 ± 4.1 Ma (2σ). Porphyroblast–matrix relationships in these samples, and samples from the same outcrops, indicate syn-tectonic garnet growth. These relationships imply that the garnet ages directly date the development of the metamorphic foliations. A third sample of migmatitic garnet amphibolite from the contact aureole of the 94–90 Ma Ecstall pluton had complex isotope systematics interpreted to indicate a garnet growth episode not, vert, similar 105 Ma, similar to the ages obtained from the other samples and a growth or equilibration event at not, vert, similar 94 Ma during pluton emplacement. The data show that the older Lu–Hf garnet ages date prograde metamorphism during foliation development and modification during pluton emplacement. The Ecstall pluton was emplaced 10 to 15 m.y. after regional metamorphism and thrust stacking in the Prince Rupert area. In order to place our samples in a regional tectonic context we compare our results to patterns of regional deformation, metamorphism and plutonism throughout the North American Cordillera in the time period between 110 and 85 Ma. Contractional and transpressional deformation occurred throughout much of the North American Cordillera at this time, from southeastern Alaska to the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Left-lateral transpression dominated the Canadian Cordillera, whereas, right-lateral transpression affected areas south of the Idaho–Salmon River suture zone, including the Sierra Nevada batholith.
