A number of approaches are presented for developing and calibrating numerical geothermal reservoir models that are capable of accurately representing geothermal surface features. The approaches are discussed in the context of cases studies of the Rotorua geothermal system and the Orakei-korako geothermal system, both of which contain important surface features. The results show that models are able to match the available field data accurately and hence can be used as valuable tools for predicting the future response of the systems to changes in use. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geothermal%20reservoir%20models" title="geothermal reservoir models">geothermal reservoir models</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=surface%20features" title=" surface features"> surface features</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monitoring" title=" monitoring"> monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=TOUGH2" title=" TOUGH2"> TOUGH2</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25882/using-reservoir-models-for-monitoring-geothermal-surface-features" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25882.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">414</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">760</span> Chicago School of Architecture 1900</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lula%20Chou">Lula Chou</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> At the turn of the 20th century, Chicago faced a large real estate boom and technological advances through industrialization that led to the rise of the commercial skyscrapers. Focusing on creating a Midwest regional character and new functional meanings of structural art, architects like Sullivan, Adler, Burnham, and Root dominated the first Chicago School of Architecture. After they spearheaded the arena of modern skyscrapers, other cities in the United States like New York soon followed the trend. While battling with eclecticism and Beaux-Arts beliefs in decorative style, Chicago architects adapted Classical monumentality into their modern expressions that emphasized organicism and functionalism. With various experiments of material possibilities in the steel-framed constructions, Chicago architecture succeeded in forming humanitarian aesthetics alongside fulfilling functional requirements of the new generation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chicago%20school" title="Chicago school">Chicago school</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=modernity" title=" modernity"> modernity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monumentality" title=" monumentality"> monumentality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=skyscrapers" title=" skyscrapers"> skyscrapers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sullivan" title=" Sullivan"> Sullivan</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124564/chicago-school-of-architecture-1900" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/124564.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">141</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">759</span> Nanoparticle-Based Histidine-Rich Protein-2 Assay for the Detection of the Malaria Parasite Plasmodium Falciparum </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yagahira%20E.%20Castro-Sesquen">Yagahira E. Diagnosis can be challenging due to the prevalence of diseases with similar symptoms. Accurate diagnosis is increasingly important to avoid overprescribing antimalarial drugs, minimize drug resistance, and minimize costs. A nanoparticle-based assay for detection and quantification of Plasmodium falciparum histidine-rich protein 2 (HRP2) in urine and serum is reported. The assay uses magnetic beads conjugated with anti-HRP2 antibody for protein capture and concentration, and antibody-conjugated quantum dots for optical detection. Western Blot analysis demonstrated that magnetic beads allows the concentration of HRP2 protein in urine by 20-fold. The concentration effect was achieved because large volume of urine can be incubated with beads, and magnetic separation can be easily performed in minutes to isolate beads containing HRP2 protein. Magnetic beads and Quantum Dots 525 conjugated to anti-HRP2 antibodies allows the detection of low concentration of HRP2 protein (0.5 ng mL-1), and quantification in the range of 33 to 2,000 ng mL-1 corresponding to the range associated with non-severe to severe malaria. This assay can be easily adapted to a non-invasive point-of-care test for classification of severe malaria. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=HRP2%20protein" title="HRP2 protein">HRP2 protein</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=malaria" title=" malaria"> malaria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=magnetic%20beads" title=" magnetic beads"> magnetic beads</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Quantum%20dots" title=" Quantum dots"> Quantum dots</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40731/nanoparticle-based-histidine-rich-protein-2-assay-for-the-detection-of-the-malaria-parasite-plasmodium-falciparum" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40731.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">333</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">758</span> The Characterisation of TLC NAND Flash Memory, Leading to a Definable Endurance/Retention Trade-Off</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sorcha%20Bennett">Sorcha Bennett</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Joe%20Sullivan"> Joe Sullivan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Triple-Level Cell (TLC) NAND Flash memory at, and below, 20nm (nanometer) is still largely unexplored by researchers, and with the ever more commonplace existence of Flash in consumer and enterprise applications there is a need for such gaps in knowledge to be filled. Today, using wireless communication for electrical machines is interesting for both real time monitoring and diagnostic purposes. In this paper, we propose a system based on wireless communication IEEE 802.11 to control electrical machine. IEEE 802.11 standard is recommended for this type of applications because it provides a faster connection, better range from the base station, and better security. Therefore, our contribution is to study a new technique to control and monitor the rotating electrical machines (motors, generators) using wireless communication. The reliability of radio channel inside rotating electrical machine is also discussed. Then, the communication protocol, software and hardware design used for the proposed system are presented in detail and the experimental results of our system are illustrated. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=control" title="control">control</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DFIM%20machine" title=" DFIM machine"> DFIM machine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=electromagnetic%20field" title=" electromagnetic field"> electromagnetic field</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EMC" title=" EMC"> EMC</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=IEEE%20802.11" title=" IEEE 802.11"> IEEE 802.11</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monitoring" title=" monitoring"> monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rotating%20electrical%20machines" title=" rotating electrical machines"> rotating electrical machines</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wireless%20communication" title=" wireless communication"> wireless communication</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/34526/feasibility-study-of-wireless-communication-for-the-control-and-monitoring-of-rotating-electrical-machine" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/34526.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">695</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">755</span> Expounding the Evolution of the Proto-Femme Fatale and Its Correlation with the New Woman: A Close Study of David Mamet's Oleanna </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Silvia%20Elias">Silvia Elias</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The 'Femme Fatale' figure has become synonymous with a mysterious and seductive woman whose charms captivate her lovers into bonds of irresistible desire, often leading them to compromise or downfall. Originally, a Femme Fatale typically uses her beauty to lead men to their destruction but in modern literature, she represents a direct attack on traditional womanhood and the nuclear family as she refuses to abide by the pillars of mainstream society creating an image of a strong independent woman who defies the control of men and rejects the institution of the family. This research aims at discussing the differences and similarities between the femme fatale and the New Woman and how they are perceived by the audience. There is often confusion between the characteristics that define a New Woman and a Femme Fatale since both women desire independence, challenge typical gender role casting, push against the limits of the patriarchal society and take control of their sexuality. The study of the femme fatale remains appealing in modern times because the fear of gender equality gives life to modern femme fatale versions and post-modern literary works introduce their readers to new versions of the deadly seductress. One that does not fully depend on her looks to destroy men. The idea behind writing this paper was born from reading David Mamet's two-character play Oleanna (1992) and tracing the main female protagonist/antagonist's transformation from a helpless inarticulate girl into a powerful controlling negotiator who knows how to lead a bargain and maintain the upper hand. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Circe" title="Circe">Circe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David" title=" David"> David</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eve" title=" Eve"> Eve</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=evolution" title=" evolution"> evolution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=feminist" title=" feminist"> feminist</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=femme%20fatale" title=" femme fatale"> femme fatale</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gender" title=" gender"> gender</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mamet" title=" Mamet"> Mamet</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new" title=" new"> new</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Odysseus" title=" Odysseus"> Odysseus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Oleanna" title=" Oleanna"> Oleanna</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=power" title=" power"> power</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Salome" title=" Salome"> Salome</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=schema" title=" schema"> schema</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seduction" title=" seduction"> seduction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=temptress" title=" temptress"> temptress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=woman" title=" woman"> woman</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83217/expounding-the-evolution-of-the-proto-femme-fatale-and-its-correlation-with-the-new-woman-a-close-study-of-david-mamets-oleanna" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83217.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">456</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">754</span> Simulating the Unseen: David Cronenberg’s Body Horror through Baudrillard’s Lens</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mario%20G.%20Rodriguez">Mario G. Little has been written to show how Cronenberg’s cinema exemplifies Baudrillard’s conceptualization of postmodernity. The study employs Baudrillard’s historical orders of simulacra, as well as his definitions of hyperreality and simulation, to recontextualize Cronenberg’s films in an era characterized by the increasing influence of media and technology and Cronenberg's oeuvre presents a compelling canvas for examining the interplay between the real and the simulated. Through films like "Videodrome" (1983), "The Fly" (1986), and "eXistenZ" (1999), Cronenberg navigates the complex terrain of the human body, technology, and societal perceptions, echoing Baudrillard's concerns about the hyperreal and the dissolution of reality. The study concludes with a consideration of the role of "body-horror" as it pertains to Baudrillard's theory. It sheds light on how fear of loss of bodily autonomy, the relationship between technology and the human body, and the intersection of science, medicine, and horror reflect the nature of hyperreality and simulation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cronenberg" title="Cronenberg">Cronenberg</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hyperreality" title=" hyperreality"> hyperreality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=simulation" title=" simulation"> simulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Baudrillard" title=" Baudrillard"> Baudrillard</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/181472/simulating-the-unseen-david-cronenbergs-body-horror-through-baudrillards-lens" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/181472.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">69</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">753</span> Investigation of the Grain-Boundary Segregation Transition in the Binary Fe-C Alloy</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V%C3%A9gh%20%C3%81d%C3%A1m">Végh Ádám</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mekler%20Csaba"> Mekler Csaba</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dezs%C5%91%20Andr%C3%A1s"> Dezső András</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Szab%C3%B3%20D%C3%A1vid"> Szabó Dávid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stomp%20D%C3%A1vid"> Stomp Dávid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kaptay%20Gy%C3%B6rgy"> Kaptay György</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Grain boundary segregation transition (GBST) has been calculated by a thermodynamic model in binary alloys. The GBST line is shown in the Fe3C lacking part of the phase diagram with high solvent (Fe) concentration. At a lower solute content (C) or at higher temperature the grain boundary is composed mostly of the solvent atoms (Fe). On higher concentration compared to the GBST line or at lower temperature a phase transformation occurs at the grain boundary, the latter mostly composed of the associates (Fe3C). These low-segregation and high-segregation states are first order interfacial phase transitions of the grain boundary and can be transformed into each other reversibly. These interviews involved questions about general communication instances which occurred each week, communication strategies used each week, and how progress was being made on forming relationships with parents. Results confirm previous researchers’ hypotheses regarding methods, purposes, and regularity of positive communication incidences. Communication that met the positive goals of nurturing and maintaining relationships was open and frequent, reciprocal, and informal. Limitations are discussed as well as issues of trustworthiness. Three radiators found in desktop computers sized for 120 mm fans were tested in steady and pulsatile flows of ambient air over a Reynolds number range of 50 < Re < 900. Water at 60 °C was circulated through the radiators to maintain a constant fin temperature during the tests. For steady flow, it was found that the heat transfer rate increased linearly with the mass flow rate of air. The pulsatile flow experiments showed that frequency of pulsation had a negligible effect on the heat transfer rate for the range of frequencies tested (0.5 Hz – 2.5 Hz). For all three radiators, the heat transfer rate was decreased in the case of pulsatile flow. Linear heat transfer correlations for steady and pulsatile flow were calculated in terms of Reynolds number and Nusselt number. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finned-tube%20heat%20exchangers" title="finned-tube heat exchangers">finned-tube heat exchangers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heat%20transfer%20correlations" title=" heat transfer correlations"> heat transfer correlations</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pulsatile%20flow" title=" pulsatile flow"> pulsatile flow</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computer%20radiators" title=" computer radiators"> computer radiators</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59633/empirical-heat-transfer-correlations-of-finned-tube-heat-exchangers-in-pulsatile-flow" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/59633.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">506</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">750</span> The Words of the Pandemic in Spillover by David Quammen</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna%20Maria%20Re">Anna Maria Re</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Taking advantage of the ecolinguistic theoretical and practical analysis, the work intends the prophetic, punctual, and at times disturbing language used by David Quammen in Spillover, questioning it from an ecological perspective and contributing to the search for new stories. In the famous volume, the author illustrates a literary history of the great epidemics and pandemics, demonstrating that viruses are nature's inevitable response to man's assault on ecosystems. In doing so, he introduces new words, which have tamed our anxieties in recent years since writing as a human artistic expression can mirror the human conscience. Writing in the Anthropocene, coining a new reference lexicon with respect to what is happening, means offering a form to the idea of survival of the planet, imagining the human being grappling with an environment whose conformation he himself has helped to change with a language that is no longer effective in describing the world as we have known it and that quickly needs a radical overhaul. Following the methodology proposed in Ecolinguistics: language, ecology and the stories we live by, the analysis in the paper will enhance the language that encodes new stories based on: ideologies, framings, metaphors, evaluations, identities, convictions, and salience. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anthropocene" title="Anthropocene">Anthropocene</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pandemic" title=" pandemic"> pandemic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spillover" title=" spillover"> spillover</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=virus" title=" virus"> virus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=zoonosis" title=" zoonosis"> zoonosis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161043/the-words-of-the-pandemic-in-spillover-by-david-quammen" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161043.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">98</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">749</span> Identity-Based Encryption: A Comparison of Leading Classical and Post-Quantum Implementations in an Enterprise Setting</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emily%20Stamm">Emily Stamm</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Neil%20Smyth"> Neil Smyth</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elizabeth%20O%27Sullivan"> Elizabeth O'Sullivan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In Identity-Based Encryption (IBE), an identity, such as a username, email address, or domain name, acts as the public key. IBE consolidates the PKI by eliminating the repetitive process of requesting public keys for each message encryption. Two of the most popular schemes are Sakai-Kasahara (SAKKE), which is based on elliptic curve pairings, and the Ducas, Lyubashevsky, and Prest lattice scheme (DLP- Lattice), which is based on quantum-secure lattice cryptography. In or- der to embed the schemes in a standard enterprise setting, both schemes are implemented as shared system libraries and integrated into a REST service that functions at the enterprise level. The performance of both schemes as libraries and services is compared, and the practicalities of implementation and application are discussed. Our performance results indicate that although SAKKE has the smaller key and ciphertext sizes, DLP-Lattice is significantly faster overall and we recommend it for most enterprise use cases. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=identity-based%20encryption" title="identity-based encryption">identity-based encryption</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=post-quantum%20cryptography" title=" post-quantum cryptography"> post-quantum cryptography</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lattice-based%20cryptography" title=" lattice-based cryptography"> lattice-based cryptography</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=IBE" title=" IBE"> IBE</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146066/identity-based-encryption-a-comparison-of-leading-classical-and-post-quantum-implementations-in-an-enterprise-setting" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146066.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">136</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">748</span> Data Modeling and Calibration of In-Line Pultrusion and Laser Ablation Machine Processes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20F.%20Nettleton">David F. The end product of the processes is the core of a medical guidewire, manufactured to comply with a user specification of diameter and flexibility. An ensemble approach is followed which requires training several models. Two state of the art machine learning algorithms are benchmarked: Kernel Recursive Least Squares (KRLS) and Support Vector Regression (SVR). The final objective is to build a precise digital model of the pultrusion and laser ablation process in order to calibrate the resulting diameter and flexibility of a medical guidewire, which is the end product while taking into account the friction on the forming die. The result is an ensemble of models, whose output is within a strict required tolerance and which covers the required range of diameter and flexibility of the guidewire end product. Both Caetano Veloso and David Bowie were pioneers in establishing an aesthetic game between various artistic expressions at the service of the music-visual scene, that is, the conceptual interconnections between several forms of aesthetic processes, such as fine arts, theatre, cinema, poetry, and literature. There are also correlations in their expressive attitudes of art, especially regarding the dialogue between the fields of art and politics (concern with respect to human rights, human dignity, racial issues, tolerance, gender issues, and sexuality, among others); the constant tension and cunning game between market, free expression and critical sense; the sophisticated, playful mechanisms of metalanguage and aesthetic metacritique. Fact is that both of them almost came to cooperate with each other in the 1970s when Caetano was in exile in England, and when both had at the same time the same music producer, who tried to bring them closer, noticing similar aesthetic qualities in both artistic works, which was later glimpsed by some music critics. Among many of the most influential issues in Caetano's and Bowie's game of artistic-aesthetic expression are, for example, the ideas advocated by the sensation of strangeness (Albert Camus), art as transcendence (Friedrich Nietzsche), the deconstruction and reconstruction of auratic reconfiguration of artistic signs (Walter Benjamin and Andy Warhol). For deepen more theoretical issues, the following authors will be used as supportive interpretative references: Hans-Georg Gadamer, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Schiller, Johan Huizinga. In addition to the aesthetic meanings of Ars Ludens characteristics of the two artists, the following supporting references will be also added: the question of technique (Martin Heidegger), the logic of sense (Gilles Deleuze), art as an event and the sense of the gesture of art ( Maria Teresa Cruz), the society of spectacle (Guy Debord), Verarbeitung and Durcharbeitung (Sigmund Freud), the poetics of interpretation and the sign of relation (Cremilda Medina). The purpose of such interpretative references is to seek to understand, from a cultural reading perspective (cultural semiology), some significant elements in the dynamics of aesthetic and media interconnections of both artists, which made them as some of the most influential interlocutors in contemporary music aesthetic thought, as a playful vivid experience of life and art. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Caetano%20Veloso" title="Caetano Veloso">Caetano Veloso</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Bowie" title=" David Bowie"> David Bowie</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=music%20aesthetics" title=" music aesthetics"> music aesthetics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=symbolic%20playfulness" title=" symbolic playfulness"> symbolic playfulness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cultural%20reading" title=" cultural reading"> cultural reading</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120266/the-audiovisual-media-as-a-metacritical-ludicity-gesture-in-the-musical-performatic-and-scenic-works-of-caetano-veloso-and-david-bowie" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120266.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">166</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">746</span> Rotational and Linear Accelerations of an Anthropometric Test Dummy Head from Taekwondo Kicks among Amateur Practitioners</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gabriel%20P.%20Fife">Gabriel P. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify the kinematic characteristics of head impacts due to taekwondo kicks among non-elite practitioners. Participants: Male participants (n= 11, 175 + 5.3 cm, 71 + 8.3 kg) with 7.5 + 3.6 years of taekwondo training volunteered for this study. Methods: Participants were asked to perform five repetitions of each technique (i.e., turning kick, spinning hook kick, spinning back kick, front axe kick, and clench axe kick) aimed at the Hybrid III head with their dominant kicking leg. All participants wore a protective foot pad (thickness = 12 mm) that is commonly used in competition and training. To simulate head impact in taekwondo, the target consisted of a Hybrid III 50th Percentile Crash Test Dummy (Hybrid III) head (mass = 5.1 kg) and neck (fitted with taekwondo headgear) secured to an aluminum support frame and positioned to each athlete’s standing height. The Hybrid III head form was instrumented with a 500 g tri-axial accelerometer (PCB Piezotronics) mounted to the head center of gravity to obtain resultant linear accelerations (RLA). Rotational accelerations were collected using three angular rate sensors mounted orthogonally to each other (Diversified Technical Systems ARS-12 K Angular Rate Sensor). The accelerometers were interfaced via a 3-channel, battery-powered integrated circuit piezoelectric sensor signal conditioner (PCB Piezotronics) and connected to a desktop computer for analysis. Acceleration data were captured using LABVIEW Signal Express and processed in accordance with SAE J211-1 channel frequency class 1000. Head injury criteria values (HIC) were calculated using the VSRSoftware. A one-way analysis of variance was used to determine differences between kicks, while the Tukey HSD test was employed for pairwise comparisons. The level of significance was set to an effect size of 0.20. All statistical analyses were done using R 3.1.0. Results: A statistically significant difference was observed in RLA (p = 0.00075); however, these differences were not clinically meaningful (η² = 0.04, 95% CI: -0.94 to 1.03). No differences were identified with ROTA (p = 0.734, η² = 0.0004, 95% CI: -0.98 to 0.98). A statistically significant difference (p < 0.001) between kicks in HIC was observed, with a medium effect (η2= 0.08, 95% CI: -0.98 to 1.07). However, the confidence interval of this difference indicates uncertainty. Tukey HSD test identified differences (p < 0.001) between kicking techniques in RLA and HIC. Conclusion: This study observed head impact levels that were comparable to previous studies of similar objectives and methodology. These data are important as impact measures from this study may be more representative of impact levels experienced by non-elite competitors. Although the clench axe kick elicited a lower RLA, the ROTA of this technique was higher than levels from other techniques (although not large differences in reference to effect sizes). As the axe kick has been reported to cause severe head injury, future studies may consider further study of this kick important. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Taekwondo" title="Taekwondo">Taekwondo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=head%20injury" title=" head injury"> head injury</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biomechanics" title=" biomechanics"> biomechanics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=kicking" title=" kicking"> kicking</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/190616/rotational-and-linear-accelerations-of-an-anthropometric-test-dummy-head-from-taekwondo-kicks-among-amateur-practitioners" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/190616.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">28</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">745</span> Metrics and Methods for Improving Resilience in Agribusiness Supply Chains</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Golnar%20Behzadi">Golnar Behzadi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20O%27Sullivan"> Michael O'Sullivan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tava%20Olsen"> Tava Olsen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abraham%20Zhang"> Abraham Zhang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> By definition, increasing supply chain resilience improves the supply chain’s ability to return to normal, or to an even more desirable situation, quickly and efficiently after being hit by a disruption. This is especially critical in agribusiness supply chains where the products are perishable and have a short life-cycle. In this paper, we propose a resilience metric to capture and improve the recovery process in terms of both performance and time, of an agribusiness supply chain following either supply or demand-side disruption. We build a model that determines optimal supply chain recovery planning decisions and selects the best resilient strategies that minimize the loss of profit during the recovery time window. The model is formulated as a two-stage stochastic mixed-integer linear programming problem and solved with a branch-and-cut algorithm. The results show that the optimal recovery schedule is highly dependent on the duration of the time-window allowed for recovery. In addition, the profit loss during recovery is reduced by utilizing the proposed resilient actions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agribusiness%20supply%20chain" title="agribusiness supply chain">agribusiness supply chain</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=recovery" title=" recovery"> recovery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=resilience%20metric" title=" resilience metric"> resilience metric</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=risk%20management" title=" risk management"> risk management</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67437/metrics-and-methods-for-improving-resilience-in-agribusiness-supply-chains" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/67437.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">397</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">744</span> Planning of Construction Material Flow Using Hybrid Simulation Modeling </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20M.%20Naraghi">A. Despite the wide use of these simulation approaches in the construction field, their applications for production and material planning is still limited. This is largely due to the dynamic and complex nature of construction material supply chain systems. Moreover, managing the flow of construction material is not well integrated with site logistics in traditional construction planning methods. This paper presents a hybrid of DES and ABS to simulate on-site and off-site material supply processes. DES is applied to determine the best production scenarios with information of on-site production systems, while ABS is used to optimize the supply chain network. A case study of a construction piling project in New Zealand is presented illustrating the potential benefits of using the proposed hybrid simulation model in construction material flow planning. The hybrid model presented can be used to evaluate the impact of different decisions on construction supply chain management. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=construction%20supply-chain%20management" title="construction supply-chain management">construction supply-chain management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=simulation%20modeling" title=" simulation modeling"> simulation modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=decision-support%20tools" title=" decision-support tools"> decision-support tools</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hybrid%20simulation" title=" hybrid simulation"> hybrid simulation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/103280/planning-of-construction-material-flow-using-hybrid-simulation-modeling" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/103280.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">207</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">743</span> Information and Cooperativity in Fiction: The Pragmatics of David Baboulene’s “Knowledge Gaps”</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cara%20DiGirolamo">Cara DiGirolamo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In his 2017 Ph.D. thesis, script doctor David Baboulene presented a theory of fiction in which differences in the knowledge states between participants in a literary experience, including reader, author, and characters, create many story elements, among them suspense, expectations, subtext, theme, metaphor, and allegory. This theory can be adjusted and modeled by incorporating a formal pragmatic approach that understands narrative as a speech act with a conversational function. This approach requires both the Speaker and the Listener to be understood as participants in the discourse. It also uses theories of cooperativity and the QUD to identify the existence of implicit questions. This approach predicts that what an effective literary narrative must do: provide a conversational context early in the story so the reader can engage with the text as a conversational participant. In addition, this model incorporates schema theory. Schema theory is a cognitive model for learning and processing information about the world and transforming it into functional knowledge. Using this approach can extend the QUD model. Instead of describing conversation as a form of information gathering restricted to question-answer sets, the QUD can include knowledge modeling and understanding as a possible outcome of a conversation. With this model, Baboulene’s “Knowledge Gaps” can provide real insight into storytelling as a conversational move, and extend the QUD to be able to simply and effectively apply to a more diverse set of conversational interactions and also to narrative texts. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=literature" title="literature">literature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=speech%20acts" title=" speech acts"> speech acts</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=QUD" title=" QUD"> QUD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=literary%20theory" title=" literary theory"> literary theory</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/194938/information-and-cooperativity-in-fiction-the-pragmatics-of-david-baboulenes-knowledge-gaps" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/194938.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">8</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">742</span> Isothermal Solid-Phase Amplification System for Detection of Yersinia pestis</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olena%20Mayboroda">Olena Mayboroda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angel%20Gonzalez%20Benito"> Angel Gonzalez Benito</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jonathan%20Sabate%20Del%20Rio"> Jonathan Sabate Del Rio</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marketa%20Svobodova"> Marketa Svobodova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20Julich"> Sandra Julich</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Herbert%20Tomaso"> Herbert Tomaso</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ciara%20K.%20O%27Sullivan"> Ciara K. Isothermal amplification techniques are being developed to respond to this problem. One of them is the Recombinase Polymerase Amplification (RPA) that operates at isothermal conditions without sacrificing specificity and sensitivity in easy-to-use formats. In this work RPA was used for the optical detection of solid-phase amplification of the potential biowarfare agent Yersinia pestis. Thiolated forward primers were immobilized on the surface of maleimide-activated microtitre plates for the quantitative detection of synthetic and genomic DNA, with elongation occurring only in the presence of the specific template DNA and solution phase reverse primers. Quantitative detection was achieved via the use of biotinylated reverse primers and post-amplification addition of streptavidin-HRP conjugate. The overall time of amplification and detection was less than 1 hour at a constant temperature of 37oC. Single-stranded and double-stranded DNA sequences were detected achieving detection limits of 4.04*10-13 M and 3.14*10-16 M, respectively. The system demonstrated high specificity with negligible responses to non-specific targets. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=recombinase%20polymerase%20amplification" title="recombinase polymerase amplification">recombinase polymerase amplification</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yersinia%20pestis" title=" Yersinia pestis"> Yersinia pestis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=solid-phase%20detection" title=" solid-phase detection"> solid-phase detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ELONA" title=" ELONA"> ELONA</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42960/isothermal-solid-phase-amplification-system-for-detection-of-yersinia-pestis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42960.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">303</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">741</span> Direct Visualization of Shear Induced Structures in Wormlike Micellar Solutions by Microfluidics and Advanced Microscopy</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carla%20Caiazza">Carla Caiazza</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Valentina%20Preziosi"> Valentina Preziosi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giovanna%20Tomaiuolo"> Giovanna Tomaiuolo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Denis%20O%27Sullivan"> Denis O'Sullivan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vincenzo%20Guida"> Vincenzo Guida</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Stefano%20Guido"> Stefano Guido</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the last decades, wormlike micellar solutions have been extensively used to tune the rheological behavior of home care and personal care products. This and other successful applications underlie the growing attention that both basic and applied research are devoting to these systems, and to their unique rheological and flow properties. One of the key research topics is the occurrence of flow instabilities at high shear rates (such as shear banding), with the possibility of appearance of flow induced structures. In this scenario, microfluidics is a powerful tool to get a deeper insight into the flow behavior of a wormlike micellar solution, as the high confinement of a microfluidic device facilitates the onset of the flow instabilities; furthermore, thanks to its small dimensions, it can be coupled with optical microscopy, allowing a direct visualization of flow structuring phenomena. Here, the flow of a widely used wormlike micellar solution through a glass capillary has been studied, by coupling the microfluidic device with μPIV techniques. The direct visualization of flow-induced structures and the flow visualization analysis highlight a relationship between solution structuring and the onset of discontinuities in the velocity profile. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow%20instabilities" title="flow instabilities">flow instabilities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow-induced%20structures" title=" flow-induced structures"> flow-induced structures</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=%CE%BCPIV" title=" μPIV"> μPIV</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wormlike%20micelles" title=" wormlike micelles "> wormlike micelles </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68641/direct-visualization-of-shear-induced-structures-in-wormlike-micellar-solutions-by-microfluidics-and-advanced-microscopy" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68641.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">346</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">740</span> Demographic Dividend Explained by Infrastructure Costs of Population Growth Rate, Distinct from Age Dependency</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jane%20N.%20O%27Sullivan">Jane N. Since the turn of this century, demographic dividend theory has been increasingly recognised, hypothesising that higher proportions of working-age people can contribute to economic expansion if conditions are met to employ them productively. Population growth rate, as a systemic condition distinct from age composition, has not been similar attention since the 1970s and has lacked methodology for quantitative assessment. This paper explores conceptual and empirical quantification of the burden of expanding physical capital to accommodate a growing population. In proof-of-concept analyses of Australia and the United Kingdom, actual expenditure on gross fixed capital formation was compiled over four decades and apportioned to maintenance/turnover or expansion to accommodate population growth, based on lifespan of capital assets and population growth rate. In both countries, capital expansion was estimated to cost 6.5-7.0% of GDP per 1% population growth rate. This opportunity cost impedes the improvement of per capita capacity needed to realise the potential of the working-age population. Economic modelling of demographic scenarios have to date omitted this channel of influence; the implications of its inclusion are discussed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=age%20dependency" title="age dependency">age dependency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=demographic%20dividend" title=" demographic dividend"> demographic dividend</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=infrastructure" title=" infrastructure"> infrastructure</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=population%20growth%20rate" title=" population growth rate"> population growth rate</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/106742/demographic-dividend-explained-by-infrastructure-costs-of-population-growth-rate-distinct-from-age-dependency" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/106742.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">143</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">739</span> Boundary Motion by Curvature: Accessible Modeling of Oil Spill Evaporation/Dissipation </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gary%20Miller">Gary Miller</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andriy%20Didenko"> Andriy Didenko</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Allison"> David Allison</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The boundary of a region in the plane shrinks according to its curvature. As an example, the United States and Brazil combined generated more than 30,000 forest fires last year. The impact to our environment, structures and individuals is incalculable. The world has learned to try to take this in stride, trying multiple ways to contain fires. Some countries are trying to use cameras in limited areas. There are discussions of using hundreds of low earth orbit satellites and linking them together, and, interfacing them through ground networks. These are all truly noble attempts to defeat the forest fire phenomenon. But there is a better, simpler answer. A bigger piece of the solutions puzzle is to see the fires while they are small, soon after initiation. The approach is to see the fires while they are very small and report their location (latitude and longitude) to local first responders. This is done by placing a sensor at geostationary orbit (GEO: 26,000 miles above the earth). By placing this small satellite in GEO, we can “stare” at the earth, and sense temperature changes. We do not “see” fires, but “measure” temperature changes. This has already been demonstrated on an experimental scale. Fires were seen at close to initiation, and info forwarded to first responders. it were the first to identify the fires 7 out of 8 times. The goal is to have a small independent satellite at GEO orbit focused only on forest fire initiation. Thus, with one small satellite, focused only on forest fire initiation, we hope to greatly decrease the impact to persons, property and the environment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=space%20detection" title="space detection">space detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=wildfire%20early%20warning" title=" wildfire early warning"> wildfire early warning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=demonstration%20wildfire%20detection%20and%20action%20from%20space" title=" demonstration wildfire detection and action from space"> demonstration wildfire detection and action from space</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=space%20detection%20to%20first%20responders" title=" space detection to first responders"> space detection to first responders</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/179337/reduce-the-impact-of-wildfires-by-identifying-them-early-from-space-and-sending-location-directly-to-closest-first-responders" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/179337.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">70</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">736</span> The Invisible Labour of Informal Care: Parentified Caregiving in David Chariandy's Soucouyant</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Walter%20Rafael%20Ramos%20Villanueva">Walter Rafael Ramos Villanueva</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The overwhelming majority of scholarship on David Chariandy’s novel Soucouyant focuses on how Adele’s dementia represents the preservation of “cultural memory” and the perniciousness of “historical trauma.” However, by metaphorizing Adele’s mental condition, these critics risk treating her dementia as mostly figurative, and they thus elide a more detailed discussion of the literal ramifications of her dementia diagnosis. To move beyond these readings, then, my paper will approach Adele’s disorder as a literal medical condition and explore how her caregiving needs affect not only her but also those around her. Soucouyant subverts traditional caregiving narratives by depicting the difficult and typically invisible labour of informal caregiving that is undertaken by the families and friends of those who are ill or otherwise disabled. Because Adele’s family is unable to access proper public healthcare resources within the community, the burden of care falls upon the protagonist and his brother, who become “parentified children.” Parentified children, according to Nancy D. Chase, are “parents to their parents, and fulfill this role at the expense of their own developmentally appropriate needs and pursuits.” The novel provides a depiction of informal caregiving that is multi-faceted and asks us to question why is it exactly that we place the burden of care on those who are not equipped to handle such pressures instead of putting the onus on the government and the public healthcare system to take care of its most vulnerable members. Ageing Studies scholar Larry Polvika notes that although policymakers often offer “pious expressions of appreciation” and acknowledge that informal caregiving is “the backbone of our long-term care system,” governmental support for these caregivers remains inadequate. It is my belief that, by showcasing the struggles of informal caregivers, Chariandy’s text combats this dangerous and empty political rhetoric. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=caregiving" title="caregiving">caregiving</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dementia" title=" dementia"> dementia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=literature" title=" literature"> literature</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parentified%20children" title=" parentified children"> parentified children</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121750/the-invisible-labour-of-informal-care-parentified-caregiving-in-david-chariandys-soucouyant" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/121750.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">174</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">735</span> United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Digital Exclusion: Reconsidering Sustainable Development and Digital Poverty in the Post-Pandemic World</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serena%20Clark">Serena Clark</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katriona%20O%27Sullivan"> Katriona O'Sullivan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kevin%20Marshall"> Kevin Marshall</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mac%20MacLachlan"> Mac MacLachlan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper explores the United Nation's sustainable development goals (SDGs) alongside digital poverty and proposes that digital poverty should be a new SDG. The SDGs concentrate on 17 key areas, including economic growth, reducing inequalities, climate action, ending poverty, gender equality, and quality education. Many of the plans to fulfill these goals involve the creation and adaptation of new technologies. As we have seen with COVID-19, access to these technologies has determined communities and societies' ability to respond to these challenges in both developed and developing nations. For example, the transition to online education due to the lockdowns had a detrimental effect on children who did not have access to technology to provide continuity in their educational development. Digitalization and emerging technologies, especially information and communication technologies (ICTs), can help address each goal. Digital poverty and exclusion exacerbate the gap between rich and poor within our societies and internationally, and COVID-19 has further highlighted these issues. Closing this gap can support achieving the SDGs. If access to digital technologies measure society's response and resilience in addressing the challenges the SDGs seek to resolve, should reducing digital poverty be an SDG of its own? This paper will explore this question, arguing that digital poverty should be an independent SDG working alongside and supporting the achievement of the other 17 SDGs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20poverty" title="digital poverty">digital poverty</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=digital%20exclusion" title=" digital exclusion"> digital exclusion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=United%20Nations%20sustainable%20development%20goals" title=" United Nations sustainable development goals"> United Nations sustainable development goals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=information%20and%20communication%20technologies" title=" information and communication technologies"> information and communication technologies</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/135812/united-nations-sustainable-development-goals-and-digital-exclusion-reconsidering-sustainable-development-and-digital-poverty-in-the-post-pandemic-world" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/135812.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">139</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">734</span> Patient-Specific Design Optimization of Cardiovascular Grafts</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pegah%20Ebrahimi">Pegah Ebrahimi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Farshad%20Oveissi"> Farshad Oveissi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Iman%20Manavi-Tehrani"> Iman Manavi-Tehrani</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sina%20Naficy"> Sina Naficy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20F.%20Fletcher"> David F. Winlaw</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Despite advances in modern surgery, congenital heart disease remains a medical challenge and a major cause of infant mortality. Cardiovascular prostheses are routinely used in surgical procedures to address congenital malformations, for example establishing a pathway from the right ventricle to the pulmonary arteries in pulmonary valvar atresia. Current off-the-shelf options including human and adult products have limited biocompatibility and durability, and their fixed size necessitates multiple subsequent operations to upsize the conduit to match with patients’ growth over their lifetime. Non-physiological blood flow is another major problem, reducing the longevity of these prostheses. These limitations call for better designs that take into account the hemodynamical and anatomical characteristics of different patients. We have integrated tissue engineering techniques with modern medical imaging and image processing tools along with mathematical modeling to optimize the design of cardiovascular grafts in a patient-specific manner. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis is done according to models constructed from each individual patient’s data. This allows for improved geometrical design and achieving better hemodynamic performance. Tissue engineering strives to provide a material that grows with the patient and mimic the durability and elasticity of the native tissue. Simulations also give insight on the performance of the tissues produced in our lab and reduce the need for costly and time-consuming methods of evaluation of the grafts. We are also developing a methodology for the fabrication of the optimized designs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=computational%20fluid%20dynamics" title="computational fluid dynamics">computational fluid dynamics</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cardiovascular%20grafts" title=" cardiovascular grafts"> cardiovascular grafts</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20optimization" title=" design optimization"> design optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tissue%20engineering" title=" tissue engineering"> tissue engineering</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/96073/patient-specific-design-optimization-of-cardiovascular-grafts" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/96073.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">242</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">733</span> The Effect of Acid Treatment of PEDOT: PSS Anode for Organic Solar Cells</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ismail%20Borazan">Ismail Borazan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ayse%20Celik%20Bedeloglu"> Ayse Celik Bedeloglu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ali%20Demir"> Ali Demir</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=David%20Carroll"> David Carroll</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this project, PEDOT:PSS layer was treated with formic acid, sulphuric acid, and hydrochloric acid, methanol, acetone, and dichlorobenzene:methanol. This high-profile vessel was offered to Natural Environment Research Council and British Antarctic Survey (BAS) by Cammell Laird Shipbuilders. The Research Ship was designed to support science in extreme environments, with the expectancy to provide a wide range of specialist scientific facilities, instruments, and laboratories to conduct research over multiple disciplines. Aim: The focus is to understand the allocation and management of schedule risk on such a Major Project. Hypothesising that "effective management of schedule risk management" could be the most critical factor in determining whether the intended benefits mentioned are delivered within time and cost constraints. Objective 1: Firstly, the study seeks to understand the allocation and management of schedule risk in Major Projects. Objective 2: Secondly, it explores "effective management of schedule risk management" as the most critical factor determining the delivery of intended benefits. Methodology: This study takes a retrospective review of schedule risk management and how it influences project performance using a case study approach for the RRS (Royal Research Ship) Sir David Attenborough. Research Contribution: The outcomes of this study will contribute to a better understanding of project performance whilst building on its under-researched relationship to schedule risk management for complex projects. The outcomes of this paper will guide further research on project performance and enable the understanding of how risk-based estimates over time impact the overall risk management of the project. <p
