The man was perfect and righteous and worshiped God and departed from evil. <A name="3"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-2.htm#aramaic"><b>2</b></a></span>And seven sons and three daughters were born unto him <A name="4"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-3.htm#aramaic"><b>3</b></a></span>And his possessions were seven thousand sheep and three thousand camels, five hundred yokes of oxen, five hundred she donkeys and a very great and valuable estate, and the man was the greatest of all the sons of the East. <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-4.htm#aramaic"><b>4</b></a></span>And his sons were going and making a feast in the house, each man on his day, and were sending and inviting their three sisters to eat and drink with them. <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-5.htm#aramaic"><b>5</b></a></span>And it was that when the days of feasting came near, Job sent and hallowed them and arose early at dawn and offered up sacrifices according to the numbers of all of them, for Job said: &#8220;Perhaps my children have sinned and have cursed God in their heart.&#8221; Thus Job did all their days.<p> <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-6.htm#aramaic"><b>6</b></a></span>And the day came and the Sons of God came to stand before LORD JEHOVAH, and Satan came also in their midst to stand before LORD JEHOVAH. <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-7.htm#aramaic"><b>7</b></a></span>And LORD JEHOVAH said to Satan: &#8220;From where have you come?&#8221; Satan answered and said to LORD JEHOVAH: &#8220;I have been going around the earth and I have been walking in it.&#8221; <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-8.htm#aramaic"><b>8</b></a></span>And LORD JEHOVAH said to Satan: &#8220;Behold, you have set your heart on my Servant Job, for there is none like him in the earth, a man perfect and upright, and he worships God and departs from evil.&#8221; <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-9.htm#aramaic"><b>9</b></a></span>And Satan answered and said to LORD JEHOVAH: &#8220;Does Job worship God for nothing? <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-10.htm#aramaic"><b>10</b></a></span>You rested your hand upon him and upon his house and upon his sons and upon everything that he has in every place, and you have blessed the work of his hands, and his property has increased in the land. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-11.htm#aramaic"><b>11</b></a></span>But now reach your hand and touch everything that he has, he shall only curse you to your face!&#8221; <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-12.htm#aramaic"><b>12</b></a></span>And LORD JEHOVAH said to Satan: &#8220;Behold, everything that he has is handed over into your hands, only do not stretch your hand upon him.&#8221; And Satan went out from before the face of LORD JEHOVAH<p> <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-13.htm#aramaic"><b>13</b></a></span>And the day came and the sons and daughters of Job were eating and drinking in the house of their elder brother <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-14.htm#aramaic"><b>14</b></a></span>And a Messenger came to Job and said to him: &#8220;The oxen were driving plows and female donkeys were grazing by their side <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-15.htm#aramaic"><b>15</b></a></span>And a band of robbers fell and took them, and the young men were killed by the sword, and I escaped, I alone, that I would tell you!&#8221; <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-16.htm#aramaic"><b>16</b></a></span>And while he was speaking, another came and said to him: &#8220;The fire of God has fallen from Heaven and set fire to the sheep and the shepherds, and it burned them up, and I alone escaped that I would tell you!&#8221; <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-17.htm#aramaic"><b>17</b></a></span>And while he was speaking, another came and said to him: &#8220;Chaldeans were divided up to three parts and they fell on the camels and they drove them and the young men they murdered by the sword, and I escaped alone that I may tell you!&#8221; <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-18.htm#aramaic"><b>18</b></a></span>And while he was speaking, another came and said to him: &#8220;Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking in their eldest brother&#8217;s house <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-19.htm#aramaic"><b>19</b></a></span>And behold, a mighty wind came from the other side of the wilderness and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the boys, and they died, and I escaped, I alone, to tell you!&#8221;<p> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-20.htm#aramaic"><b>20</b></a></span>And Job stood and ripped his cloak and shaved his head, and he fell on the ground and worshiped<p> <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/job/1-21.htm#aramaic"><b>21</b></a></span>And he said: &#8220;Naked I came out from the belly of my mother, and naked I shall return. LORD JEHOVAH has given and LORD JEHOVAH has taken away.
