The name "Luhith" is derived from a root that suggests the idea of "tablets" or "slabs," possibly indicating a geographical feature such as a slope or ascent. This location is significant in the context of the prophecies against Moab, a nation often in conflict with Israel.

Biblical References:

1. Isaiah 15:5 : "My heart cries out for Moab; her fugitives flee as far as Zoar, as far as Eglath-shelishiyah. For at the Ascent of Luhith they go up weeping; surely on the road to Horonaim they raise a cry of destruction."

2. Jeremiah 48:5 : "For on the Ascent to Luhith they will ascend with continual weeping; for at the descent of Horonaim they have heard the distress of the cry of destruction."

In both Isaiah and Jeremiah, Luhith is depicted as a place of mourning and distress. The "Ascent of Luhith" is described as a path where the Moabites ascend with weeping, indicating a time of great calamity and sorrow for the people of Moab. The context of these passages is the impending judgment and destruction prophesied against Moab due to their pride and idolatry.

Historical and Geographical Context:

Luhith is traditionally associated with a hilly or elevated region within the territory of Moab, which was located east of the Dead Sea. The exact location of Luhith is not definitively known today, but it is believed to have been situated along a route that connected various Moabite cities. The ascent mentioned in the biblical texts suggests a steep incline, which would have been a notable feature for travelers and refugees fleeing from the advancing enemy forces.

Theological Significance:

The mention of Luhith in the prophetic books underscores the theme of divine judgment against nations that oppose God's people and His commandments. The imagery of weeping and lamentation at Luhith serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of sin and rebellion against God. The prophecies concerning Moab, including the references to Luhith, highlight the sovereignty of God over all nations and His righteous judgment.

In the broader biblical narrative, the judgment of Moab and the lament at Luhith can be seen as a call to repentance and a warning to all nations to turn to the Lord. The prophetic messages serve as a testament to God's justice and mercy, offering hope for restoration to those who seek Him with a contrite heart.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Luhith
made of boards
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Luhith
(made of tables or boards), The ascent of, a place in Moab, occurs only in (Isaiah 15:5) and the parallel passage of Jeremiah. It is clearly identical with the way, or descent, of Horonaim. Eusebius, Onomasticon places Luhith between Areopolis and Zoar. Some way is intended by which fugitives from the Arabah could reach the uplands of the Moabite plateau. Guthe thinks it may be the road which leads from the district of the ancient Zoar on the eastern shore of the Dead Sea to the uplands through Wady Bene Hammad. Along this track ran also a Roman road. If Horonaim were the higher of the two places, this might account for the way being called the "descent" of Horonaim as going down from that place, and the "ascent" of Luhith as going up thence. Neither place can as yet be identified with certainty.

W. Ewing

Strong's Hebrew
3872.
