It is used in various contexts, from the divine creation of the world to the everyday actions of individuals. The concept of making is foundational to understanding God's creative power, human responsibility, and the transformation of the believer's life.

Divine Creation

The Bible begins with the account of God's creative work, where "make" is a key term. In Genesis 1:26 , God says, "Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness." This passage highlights the divine intention and action in creating humanity, emphasizing the unique relationship between God and humans. The act of making here is not merely physical but also spiritual, as humans are made in the image of God.

Human Creativity and Responsibility

Throughout the Scriptures, humans are depicted as makers in various capacities, reflecting the image of their Creator. In Exodus 31:3-5 , God fills Bezalel with the Spirit of God, giving him wisdom, understanding, and skill in all kinds of craftsmanship to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver, and bronze. This passage illustrates the God-given ability to create and the responsibility to use these gifts for His glory.

Moral and Spiritual Implications

The Bible also uses "make" in a moral and spiritual sense. In Psalm 51:10 , David pleads, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me." Here, the psalmist seeks God's transformative power to make him pure and righteous. This reflects the ongoing process of sanctification in the believer's life, where God continually works to make His people holy.

Covenantal and Redemptive Acts

God's covenantal promises often involve His commitment to make His people into a nation or a holy people. In Genesis 12:2 , God promises Abram, "I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you." This act of making is tied to God's redemptive plan, where He shapes history and individuals to fulfill His purposes.

New Testament Fulfillment

In the New Testament, the concept of making takes on new dimensions with the coming of Christ. Jesus calls His disciples to follow Him, saying, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19). This invitation is not only a call to discipleship but also a promise of transformation and purpose in the mission of spreading the Gospel.

Eschatological Hope

The Bible concludes with the promise of a new creation, where God will make all things new. Revelation 21:5 declares, "He who was seated on the throne said, 'Behold, I make all things new.'" This eschatological hope assures believers of the ultimate renewal and restoration of creation, where God's creative power will culminate in a new heaven and a new earth.

In summary, the term "make" in the Bible encompasses God's creative acts, human responsibility, moral transformation, covenantal promises, and eschatological hope. It is a testament to the dynamic and purposeful work of God throughout history and in the lives of His people.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
