The instruction to enter towns and villages highlights the importance of reaching both urban and rural areas, emphasizing the universal scope of the Gospel. In the context of first-century Judea, towns and villages were often small and closely-knit, making the arrival of outsiders a notable event. This approach mirrors the Old Testament practice of prophets traveling to deliver God's message, as seen with figures like Elijah and Elisha.
find out who is worthy there
"Worthy" refers to those who are receptive to the message of the Kingdom of Heaven. This implies a discernment process, where the disciples are to seek out individuals who demonstrate openness and hospitality. The concept of worthiness is not based on social status or wealth but on the readiness to receive the Gospel. This echoes the principle found in Proverbs 9:9, where wisdom is given to those who are open to instruction. The idea of worthiness also connects to the parable of the sower (Matthew 13), where the condition of the soil (heart) determines the reception of the seed (word).
and stay at his house until you move on
Staying at one house until departure suggests stability and a focused mission. It prevents the disciples from being distracted by seeking better accommodations and allows them to build deeper relationships with their hosts. This practice of staying in one place is reminiscent of the hospitality customs in the ancient Near East, where hosting travelers was a significant cultural duty. It also reflects the principle of contentment and reliance on God's provision, as seen in the instructions given to the Israelites in the wilderness (Exodus 16:18). The disciples' dependence on the hospitality of others is a practical demonstration of living by faith, trusting that God will provide through the generosity of those who are receptive to their message.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Jesus Christ
The speaker of this instruction, Jesus is sending out His twelve disciples to preach the Kingdom of Heaven.

2. The Disciples
The immediate audience of Jesus' instructions, tasked with spreading His message.

3. Towns and Villages
The various locations where the disciples are sent to minister and preach.

4. Worthy Person
An individual in the town or village who is receptive to the message of the Kingdom and offers hospitality.

5. House
The place where the disciples are to stay, symbolizing acceptance and support for their mission.
Teaching Points
Discernment in Ministry
The instruction to find a "worthy" person highlights the need for discernment in ministry. For "when a stranger arrives in a village or an encampment, the neighbours, one after another, must invite him to eat with them.
