And behold, a certain disciple was there named Timothy, son of a believing Jewish woman, however the father a Greek, <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-2.htm#literal"><b>2</b></a></span>Who was well testified of by the brothers in Lystra and Iconium. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-3.htm#literal"><b>3</b></a></span>This one Paul wanted with him to go forth, and having taken, he circumcised him on account of the Jews being in those places; for they all knew his father was a Greek. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-4.htm#literal"><b>4</b></a></span>And while they were passing through the cities, they were delivering over to them the decrees (dogmata in greek and latin), those decided on by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem, to keep (guard). <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-5.htm#literal"><b>5</b></a></span>Therefore the churches were confirmed (made solid/stable) in the faith and abounded in number day by day.<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-6.htm#literal"><b>6</b></a></span>And having passed through Phrygia and the Galatian region, having been forbidden (prevented, hindered) by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia, <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-7.htm#literal"><b>7</b></a></span>And having come down to Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia; and the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them; <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-8.htm#literal"><b>8</b></a></span>And having passed by Mysia, they came down unto Troas. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-9.htm#literal"><b>9</b></a></span>And a vision (greek-horama, latin-visio) appeared to Paul through the night: A certain man of Macedonia was standing and entreating him, and saying, Having passed over into Macedonia, urgently help us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-10.htm#literal"><b>10</b></a></span>And when he has seen the vision, we directly sought to go forth unto Macedonia, concluding that God has called us to preach the gospel to them.<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-11.htm#literal"><b>11</b></a></span>Having sailed then from Troas, we made straight course unto Samothrace, and the next day unto Nea Polis, <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-12.htm#literal"><b>12</b></a></span>From there unto Philippi, which is the leading city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were in that city staying some days. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-13.htm#literal"><b>13</b></a></span>And on the day of the Sabbath, we went forth outside the city gate beside the river where it was customary for prayer to be, and having sat down, we spoke to the women having gathered.<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-14.htm#literal"><b>14</b></a></span>And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, worshipping God, was listening; of whom the Lord opened the heart to give full attention (devout, pay attention to, set a course and keep it) to the things being spoken by Paul. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-15.htm#literal"><b>15</b></a></span>And when she was baptized, and her house, she entreated, saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, having entered into my house, remain. And she compelled (constrained, prevailed, constrain by entreaties, latin-coegit-forced) us.<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-16.htm#literal"><b>16</b></a></span>And it happened, as we were going unto the [place of] prayer, a certain girl (maidservant) having a spirit of Python (divining spirit, a mythical serpent that guarded the oracle at Delphi and had been slain by Apollo) met us, who provided her lords much business (work) by divining (soothsaying, foretelling, predicting, from mantis- a seer, latin-divinando-soothsaying). <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-17.htm#literal"><b>17</b></a></span>She, having followed Paul and us cried out, saying, These men are servants (bond-slaves) of the Most High God, who preach to you the way of salvation. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-18.htm#literal"><b>18</b></a></span>And this she did for (upon) many days. However Paul having been thoroughly labored (annoyed, troubled, exhausted, worked up) and having turned upon the spirit, said, I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out (go out) away from her. And it came out (went out) the same hour.<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-19.htm#literal"><b>19</b></a></span>And her lords having seen that the hope of their business was gone and having taken hold of Paul and Silas, they dragged them into the marketplace (place of public assembly) before (upon) the rulers; <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-20.htm#literal"><b>20</b></a></span>And having brought them up to the magistrates (governors, latin-magistratibus), said, These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble (agitate, stir up) our city, <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-21.htm#literal"><b>21</b></a></span>And preach customs that are not permitted for us to accept nor to practice, being Romans.<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-22.htm#literal"><b>22</b></a></span>The crowd rose up together against them and the magistrates having torn off their garments, commanded to beat them with rods. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-23.htm#literal"><b>23</b></a></span>And having laid many blows upon them, they cast them into prison having charged the jailor (prison keeper) to securely keep (guard) them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-24.htm#literal"><b>24</b></a></span>Who having received such an order, threw them into the inner prison and fastened their feet into the stocks (wood).<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-25.htm#literal"><b>25</b></a></span>And at midnight, Paul and Silas, praying, were singing praises (latin- laudabant-praising, greek-hymnoun-to laud, sing a song that celebrates/honors/praises/thanks) to God. And the prisoners listened to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-26.htm#literal"><b>26</b></a></span>And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And instantly all the doors were opened and the chains (bonds) of all were loosed. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-27.htm#literal"><b>27</b></a></span>And the jailor having been roused out of sleep and having seen the doors of the prison open, having drawn his sword, was about to kill himself, supposing the prisoners to have escaped (fled out). <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-28.htm#literal"><b>28</b></a></span>However Paul called out with a great voice, saying, Do no bad (kakon) to yourself; for we are all here. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-29.htm#literal"><b>29</b></a></span>And having asked for lights, he rushed in, and having become trembling (terrified), fell down before Paul and Silas. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-30.htm#literal"><b>30</b></a></span>And having brought them outside, he said, Lords (Kyrioi, Sirs), what is necessary of me to do, so that I might be saved?<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-31.htm#literal"><b>31</b></a></span>And they said, Believe upon the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your house. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-32.htm#literal"><b>32</b></a></span>And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all those in his house. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-33.htm#literal"><b>33</b></a></span>And having taken them in that there hour of the night, he washed them from their wounds; and was baptized, he and all his immediately. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-34.htm#literal"><b>34</b></a></span>And having brought them into the house, he placed beside them a table, and rejoiced with all his household having believed in God.<p> <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-35.htm#literal"><b>35</b></a></span>And the day having come, the magistrates sent the officers (latin-lictores-lictors), saying, Release those there men. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-36.htm#literal"><b>36</b></a></span>And the jailor reported these words to Paul, The magistrates have sent, so that you might be released. Now therefore having gone out, depart in peace. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-37.htm#literal"><b>37</b></a></span>However Paul said to them, Having beaten us publicly uncondemned (not yet tried), men being Romans, they cast us into prison, and now do they throw us out secretly? No, indeed; but rather having come themselves, let them bring us out. <span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/acts/16-38.htm#literal"><b>38</b></a></span>And the officers reported these words to the magistrates.
