The interdisciplinary studies have demonstrated their effectiveness, whereas the study of evolution is one of the most fruitful areas of interdisciplinary knowledge where representatives of natural, mathematical, and social sciences, as well as the humanities can find a common field for their research. The Almanac is designed to present to its readers the widest possible spectrum of subjects and problems: from the approaches of the universal evolutionism to the analysis of particular evolutionary regularities in the development of biological, abiotic, and social systems, culture, cognition, language, etc. The first section of the Almanac presents a general sketch of the universal evolution, its main phases, vectors, and trends. The second section is dedicated to the problems of comparisons of different types of macroevolution, as well as to the possibilities to use achievements of certain fields of evolutionary research in its other fields. The third section deals with major issues of social evolution. The topics of all the sections and articles intertwine rather tightly, that actually transforms the present issue of the Almanac into a collective monograph dedicated to the search for contours and instruments of evolutionary megaparadigm. The Almanac\u0026amp;#39;s articles present a wide panorama of the application of various approaches and concepts in the framework of this emergent general paradigm that will allow to detect in a much more effective way both fundamental similarities and essential differences between different types of evolutionary dynamics. The first part explores philosophical issues concerning the process of evolution by natural selection. Then the metaphysical aspects of natural selection are examined: whether it is a law or supports natural laws; whether it is a cause, and if so, the cause of what. The consequences of the answers to these questions for scientific practice, and especially for current controversies about a possible extension or revision of the Modern Synthesis, are highlighted. The chapter then presents two classical controversies regarding the target and the limits of selective explanations -units of selection, -in both cases pointing out the adaptationism promises of explanatory pluralism. The third section considers issues raised by evolutionary patterns: first, the interpretation of the nodes in the , where the notion of species is controversial; then, the question of the relationship between tree of life macro-and , and, relatedly, the connection between putative processes and plausible patterns. microevolution Consequences for the current controversy about the fate of the Modern Synthesis are also explained. We further explicate issues raised by general features of large-scale phylogenetic patterns, such as increases in complexity, and the question of evolutionary contingency, and discuss the chances of an empirical solution to these longstanding puzzles. As a matter of fact, in speaking of similarities, one should take into account the most important characteristics of phenomena and systems – their uniqueness. At the same time the common and unique sustain complex interaction. In particular, the uniqueness is never overall, it is always realized only in several aspects important in evolutionary terms. At the same time, the deeper we comprehend the balance between general development and general evolutionary trends, on the one hand, and breakthroughs to new levels of organization, on the other, the more clearly we perceive that an evolutionary breakthrough which occurred as a result of emerging unique conditions is never an element of randomness but always occurs due to a huge and consistent evolutionary advance in a certain direction. Thus, the new emerges far from inevitably. For the emergence of something new a number of peculiarities and coincidences of complicated conditions is required; at that, it is always difficult to conceive whether all these conditions were necessary or some were contingencies of minor importance. Therefore, the transition to a new evolutionary level is such a rare and important event. For me, by the time I finished a few chapters of Robert Pennock's Tower of Babel: The Evidence against the New Creationism (1999) while in grad school trying to solidify a philosophy dissertation topic, I had been born again. Along the way, however, Francisco Ayala's "Teleological explanations in evolutionary biology" (1970), Michael Ruse's "Function statements in biology" (1971), Richard Dawkins's The Blind Watchmaker (1996), and Tim Berra's Evolution and the Myth of Creationism (1990) were significant in setting the stage.
