and no<MH3808> one<MH376> could stand<MH5975> against<MH6440> them, because<MH3588> the dread<MH6343> of them had fallen<MH5307> on all<MH3605> the peoples<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Even all<MH3605> the officials<MH8269> of the provinces<MH4082>, the satraps<MH323>, the governors<MH6346>, and those who were doing<MH6213a> the king&#8217;s<MH4428> business<MH4399> were supporting<MH5375> the Jews<MH3064>, because<MH3588> the dread<MH6343> of Mordecai<MH4782> had fallen<MH5307> on them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>For Mordecai<MH4782> was great<MH1419> in the king&#8217;s<MH4428> house<MH1004>, and the news<MH8089> about him spread<MH1980> throughout<MH3605> the provinces<MH4082>; for the man<MH376> Mordecai<MH4782> became<MH1980> greater<MH1980> and greater<MH1419>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So the Jews<MH3064> struck<MH5221> all<MH3605> their enemies<MH340> with <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>the sword<MH2719>, killing<MH2027> and destroying<MH12>; and they did<MH6213a> as they pleased<MH7522> to those who hated<MH8130> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>At the citadel<MH1002> in Susa<MH7800> the Jews<MH3064> killed<MH2026> and eliminated<MH6> five<MH2568> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>and they killed<MH2026> Parshandatha<MH6577>, Dalphon<MH1813>, Aspatha<MH630>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Poratha<MH6334>, Adalia<MH118>, Aridatha<MH743a>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Parmashta<MH6534>, Arisai<MH747b>, Aridai<MH742>, and Vaizatha<MH2055>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>the ten<MH6235> sons<MH1121> of Haman<MH2001b> the son<MH1121> of Hammedatha<MH1992b>, the Jews&#8217;<MH3064> enemy<MH6887c>; but they did not lay<MH7971> their hands<MH3027> on the plunder<MH961>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>On that day<MH3117> the number<MH4557> of those who were killed<MH2026> at the citadel<MH1002> in Susa<MH7800> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>was reported<MH935> to the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> said<MH559> to Queen<MH4436> Esther<MH635>, &#8220;The Jews<MH3064> have killed<MH2026> and eliminated<MH6> five<MH2568> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> and the ten<MH6235> sons<MH1121> of Haman<MH2001b> at the citadel<MH1002> in Susa<MH7800>. What<MH4100> have they done<MH6213a> in the rest<MH7605> of the king&#8217;s<MH4428> provinces<MH4082>! Now what<MH4100> is your request<MH7596>? It shall also be granted<MH5414> you. And what<MH4100> is your further<MH5750> wish<MH1246>? It shall also be done<MH6213a>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Esther<MH635> said<MH559>, &#8220;If<MH518> it pleases<MH5921, 2895> the king<MH4428>, let tomorrow<MH4279> also<MH1571> be granted<MH5414> to the Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> are in Susa<MH7800> to do<MH6213a> according to the edict<MH1881> of today<MH3117>; and let Haman&#8217;s<MH2001b> ten<MH6235> sons<MH1121> be hanged<MH8518> on the wooden<MH6086> <i>gallows.</i>&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So the king<MH4428> commanded<MH559> that it was to be done<MH6213a> so<MH3651>; and an edict<MH1881> was issued<MH5414> in Susa<MH7800>, and Haman&#8217;s<MH2001b> ten<MH6235> sons<MH1121> were hanged<MH8518>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>The Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> were in Susa<MH7800> assembled<MH6950> also<MH1571> on the fourteenth<MH702, 6240> day<MH3117> of the month<MH2320> Adar<MH143> and killed<MH2026> three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> men<MH376> in Susa<MH7800>, but they did not lay<MH7971> their hands<MH3027> on the plunder<MH961>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Now the rest<MH7605> of the Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> <i>were</i> in the king&#8217;s<MH4428> provinces<MH4082> assembled<MH6950>, to defend<MH5975> their lives<MH5315> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>rid<MH5117> themselves<MH5117> of their enemies<MH340>, and to kill<MH2026> seventy-five<MH2568, 7657> thousand<MH505> of those who hated<MH8130> them; but they did not lay<MH7971> their hands<MH3027> on the plunder<MH961>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><i>This was done</i> on the thirteenth<MH7969, 6240> day<MH3117> of the month<MH2320> Adar<MH143>, and on the fourteenth<MH702, 6240> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>day they rested<MH5117> and made<MH6213a> it a day<MH3117> of feasting<MH4960> and rejoicing<MH8057>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But the Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> were in Susa<MH7800> assembled<MH6950> on the thirteenth<MH7969, 6240> and the fourteenth<MH702, 6240> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>of the same month, and they rested<MH5117> on the fifteenth<MH2568, 6240> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>day and made<MH6213a> it a day<MH3117> of feasting<MH4960> and rejoicing<MH8057>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>Therefore<MH5921, 3651> the Jews<MH3064> of the rural<MH6521> areas<MH6521>, who live<MH3427> in the rural<MH6519> towns<MH5892b>, make<MH6213a> the fourteenth<MH702, 6240> day<MH3117> of the month<MH2320> Adar<MH143> <i>a</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>holiday<MH2896a, 3117> for rejoicing<MH8057> and feasting<MH4960> and sending<MH4916> portions<MH4490> <i>of food</i> to one<MH376> another<MH7453>. <p class="hdg">The Feast of Purim Instituted</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Mordecai<MH4782> recorded<MH3789> these<MH428> events<MH1697>, and he sent<MH7971> letters<MH5612> to all<MH3605> the Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> were in all<MH3605> the provinces<MH4082> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>, <i>both</i> near<MH7138> and far<MH7350>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>obliging<MH6965, 5921> them to celebrate<MH6213a> the fourteenth<MH702, 6240> day<MH3117> of the month<MH2320> Adar<MH143>, and the fifteenth<MH2568, 6240> day<MH3117> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>of the same month, annually<MH3605, 8141>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>because on those days<MH3117> the Jews<MH3064> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>rid<MH5117> themselves<MH5117> of their enemies<MH340>, and <i>it was a</i> month<MH2320> which<MH834> was turned<MH2015> for them from grief<MH3015> into joy<MH8057>, and from mourning<MH60> into a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>holiday<MH2896a, 3117>; that they were to make<MH6213a> them days<MH3117> of feasting<MH4960> and rejoicing<MH8057>, and sending<MH4916> portions<MH4490> <i>of food</i> to one<MH376> another<MH7453>, and gifts<MH4979> to the poor<MH34>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>So the Jews<MH3064> undertook<MH6901> what<MH834> they had started<MH2490c> to do<MH6213a>, and what<MH834> Mordecai<MH4782> had written<MH3789> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>For Haman<MH2001b> the son<MH1121> of Hammedatha<MH1992b>, the Agagite<MH91>, the adversary<MH6887c> of all<MH3605> the Jews<MH3064>, had schemed<MH2803> against<MH5921> the Jews<MH3064> to eliminate<MH6> them, and had cast<MH5307> Pur<MH6332>, that is the lot<MH1486>, to disturb<MH2000> them and eliminate<MH6> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>But when it came<MH935> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>to the king&#8217;s<MH4428> attention<MH6440>, he commanded<MH559> by letter<MH5612> that his wicked<MH7451a> scheme<MH4284> which<MH834> he had devised<MH2803> against<MH5921> the Jews<MH3064> was to return<MH7725> on his own head<MH7218>, and that he and his sons<MH1121> were to be hanged<MH8518> on the wooden<MH6086> <i>gallows.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Therefore<MH5921, 3651> they called<MH7121> these<MH428> days<MH3117> Purim<MH6332> after<MH5921> the name<MH8034> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>Pur<MH6332>. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>And because<MH5921> of the instructions<MH1697> in this<MH2088> letter<MH107>, both what<MH4100> they had seen<MH7200> in this<MH3602> regard<MH3602> and what<MH4100> had happened<MH5060> to them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>the Jews<MH3064> established<MH6965> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>made<MH6901> a<MH6901> custom<MH6901> for themselves, their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>descendants<MH2233>, and for all<MH3605> those who allied<MH3867a> themselves with them, so that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>they would not fail<MH5674a> to celebrate<MH6213a> these<MH428> two<MH8147> days<MH3117> according to their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>regulation<MH3791> and according to their appointed<MH2163> time<MH2165> annually<MH3605, 8141>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/9-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So these<MH428> days<MH3117> were to be remembered<MH2142> and celebrated<MH6213a> throughout every<MH1755> generation<MH1755>, every<MH4940> family<MH4940>, every<MH4082> province<MH4082>, and every<MH5892b> city<MH5892b>;
