The world literature pertaining to the use of stable-isotope analysis (SIA) in animal trophic ecology and methodological difficulties of work with subfossil material are reviewed. Several particular cases show a successful application of SIA for taxonomic identification of the archaeozoological remains, especially bones of brown and polar bears, large sea mammals and a few species of Anseriformes.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Arkady Savinetsky"},{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Olga These analyses were conducted in order to examine paleoecological conditions and interactions between humans and animal resources in different spatial and temporal contexts. In this introduction, we examine three ways in which stable isotopes have been applied in zooarcheology: (i) past animal-human relations, (ii) stable isotopes and zooarchaeology in conservation biology, and (iii) species biogeography, climate, and environment. The implications of the results of each of the papers in this volume stress that this type of study is a fruitful and promising line of research as it expands the thematic spectrum investigated, tests archaeological hypothesis, explores new lines of analysis, and enriches the interpretations about the past.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Applications of Stable Isotope Analysis in Zooarchaeology: An Introduction","attachmentId":33554190,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/6866226/Applications_of_Stable_Isotope_Analysis_in_Zooarchaeology_An_Introduction","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

2005. Since then, important isotopic research related to this topic has been carried out using samples from different regions (i.e. Lubell et al. 1994; Richards & Hedges 1999; Richards et al. 2003). The degree to which the transition from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic implied an abrupt subsistence change, accompanied by an almost complete abandonment of marine resources, has been questioned in recent debate (Bailey & Milner 2002; Hedges 2004; Lid´en et al. 2004; Milner et al. 2004). In this note, we amplify some of the caveats already expressed there regarding the comparison of faunal and isotopic data (see also Parkington 2001), and we suggest a number of methodological issues that could be taken into account in order to validate the comparisons. Some of these are also important for the integration with other kinds of archaeological data (i.e. distributions of artefacts).

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"2005. This paper traces a path of increasing connectivity between the disciplines of stable isotope biogeochemistry and zooarchaeology, a process initially facilitated by their shared interest in faunal remains and also discipline specific methodological and technological developments that opened new areas of archaeological inquiry. While a disciplinary convergence on research questions concerned with Neandertal subsistence provided an important touchstone between zooarchaeology and stable isotope analysis, zooarchaeological research agendas investigating animal domestication processes and documenting ancient animal management strategies in particular provided the critical spark that propelled stable isotopic approaches toward questions engaged with understanding how humans manipulated animal resources for their own subsistence and social needs. This paper further argues that an integrated isotope zooarchaeology is defined by an intrinsic scalar analytical flexibility that provides mutually contextualized multi-scalar insights into human behaviors at the levels of individual, household, and community previously unattainable by either zooarchaeology or stable isotope analysis alone. A further tempering of isotope zooarchaeology through explicit use of theoretical frameworks that draw from human behavioral ecology, practice theory, and cultural niche construction theory is now needed to provide coherent frames of reference that incorporate zooarchaeological and stable isotopic datasets to better understand the human use of animals for daily subsistence, social negotiation, ritual activity and political purposes.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Toward an Integrated Isotope Zooarchaeology","attachmentId":44511277,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/24171051/Toward_an_Integrated_Isotope_Zooarchaeology","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Stable-Isotope Bone Chemistry and Human/Animal Interactions in Historical Archaeology
Stéphane Noël, Eric Tourigny, Eric Guiry

2012

Stable isotope–based paleodietary work is ideally suited for answering questions about a wide variety of human/animal relationships in historical archaeological contexts in northeastern North America and farther afield. We advocate for increased attention to the possibilities of stable-isotope work by (1) explaining why the technique is well suited to address some problems of human/animal relations encountered by historical archaeologists, (2) presenting a literature review of previous stable-isotope work on human/ animal interaction in historical North America, and (3) offering a short case study on the dietary life history of an individual pig raised at the archaeological site of Ferryland, Newfoundland, Canada, based on stable carbon- and nitrogen-isotope data from serially sectioned dental collagen.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Stable-Isotope Bone Chemistry and Human/Animal Interactions in Historical Archaeology","attachmentId":42718138,"attachmentType":"doc","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/22027060/Stable_Isotope_Bone_Chemistry_and_Human_Animal_Interactions_in_Historical_Archaeology","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Bone stable isotope studies in archaeology
Margaret Schoeninger, Katherine M.
