Its portrayal of the social impacts of Scotland's burgeoning brewing and distilling industries reflects Alexander's sympathy with the <a href="/wiki/Temperance_movement" title="Temperance movement">temperance movement</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-DonaldsonIntro1986_2-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-DonaldsonIntro1986-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p><i>Johnny Gibb of Gushetneuk</i> was first published as a serial in the <i>Aberdeen Free Press</i> between 28 September 1869 and 20 December 1870.
