He came<MG4334> to them, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>and because<MG1223> he was of the same<MG3673> trade<MG3673> he stayed<MG3306> with them, and they worked<MG2038b> <i>together,</i> for they were tent-makers<MG4635> by trade<MG5078>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And <i>Paul</i> was reasoning<MG1256> in the synagogue<MG4864> every<MG3956> Sabbath<MG4521> and trying to persuade<MG3982> Jews<MG2453> and Greeks<MG1672>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But when<MG5613> Silas<MG4609> and Timothy<MG5095> came<MG2718> down<MG2718> from Macedonia<MG3109>, Paul<MG3972> <i>began</i> devoting<MG4912> himself completely<MG4912> to the word<MG3056>, testifying<MG1263> to the Jews<MG2453> that Jesus<MG2424> was the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Christ<MG5547>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But when they resisted<MG498> and blasphemed<MG987>, he shook<MG1621> out<MG1621> his garments<MG2440> and said<MG3004> to them, “Your blood<MG129> <i>is</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>on your own heads<MG2776>! I am clean<MG2513>. From now<MG3568> on I will go<MG4198> to the Gentiles<MG1484>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then<MG2532> he left<MG3327> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>the synagogue and went<MG2064> to the house<MG3614> of a man<MG5100> named<MG3686> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Titius<MG5102a> Justus<MG2459>, a worshiper<MG4576> of God<MG2316>, whose<MG3739> house<MG3614> was next<MG4927> door<MG4927> to the synagogue<MG4864>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Crispus<MG2921>, the leader<MG752> of<MG752> the<MG752> synagogue<MG752>, believed<MG4100> in the Lord<MG2962> together<MG4862> with<MG4862> his entire<MG3650> household<MG3624>; and many<MG4183> of the Corinthians<MG2881>, as they listened<MG191> <i>to Paul,</i> were believing<MG4100> and being baptized<MG907>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And the Lord<MG2962> said<MG3004> to Paul<MG3972> by a vision<MG3705> at night<MG3571>, “Do not be<MG5399> afraid<MG5399> <i>any longer,</i> but go on speaking<MG2980> and do not be silent<MG4623>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>for I am<MG1510> with you, and no<MG3762> one<MG3762> will attack<MG2007> you to harm<MG2559> you, for I have many<MG4183> people<MG2992> in this<MG3778> city<MG4172>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And he settled<MG2523> <i>there</i> for a year<MG1763> and six<MG1803> months<MG3376>, teaching<MG1321> the word<MG3056> of God<MG2316> among<MG1722> them. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But while Gallio<MG1058> was proconsul<MG446> of Achaia<MG882>, the Jews<MG2453> rose<MG2721b> up<MG2721b> together<MG3661> against<MG2721b> Paul<MG3972> and brought<MG71> him before<MG1909> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>judgment<MG968> seat<MG968>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>saying<MG3004>, “This<MG3778> man<MG3778> is inciting<MG374a> the people<MG444> to worship<MG4576> God<MG2316> contrary<MG3844> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>law<MG3551>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But when Paul<MG3972> was<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> open<MG455> his mouth<MG4750>, Gallio<MG1058> said<MG3004> to the Jews<MG2453>, “If<MG1487> it were <i>a matter of</i> some<MG5100> crime<MG92> or<MG2228> vicious<MG4190>, unscrupulous<MG4467> act<MG4467>, O<MG5599> Jews<MG2453>, it would be reasonable<MG3056> for me to put<MG430> up<MG430> with you; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>but if<MG1487> there are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>questions<MG2213> about<MG4012> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>teaching<MG3056> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>persons<MG3686> and your own law<MG3551>, see<MG3708> to<MG3708> it yourselves<MG846>; I am<MG1014> unwilling<MG3756, 1014> to be a judge<MG2923> of these<MG3778> matters.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And he drove<MG556> them away<MG556> from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>judgment<MG968> seat<MG968>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But they all<MG3956> took<MG1949> hold<MG1949> of Sosthenes<MG4988>, the leader<MG752> of<MG752> the<MG752> synagogue<MG752>, and <i>began</i> beating<MG5180> him in front<MG1715> of the judgment<MG968> seat<MG968>. And <i>yet</i> Gallio<MG1058> was not concerned<MG3199> about<MG3199> any<MG3762> of these<MG3778> things<MG3778>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now Paul<MG3972>, when he had remained<MG4357> many<MG2425> days<MG2250> longer<MG2089>, took<MG657> leave<MG657> of the brothers<MG80> <i>and sisters</i> and sailed<MG1602> away<MG1602> to Syria<MG4947>, and Priscilla<MG4251> and Aquila<MG207> were with him. <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Paul <i>first</i> had his hair<MG2776> cut<MG2751> at Cenchrea<MG2747>, for he was keeping<MG2192> a vow<MG2171>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>They came<MG2658> to Ephesus<MG2181>, and he left<MG2641> them there<MG847>. Now<MG1161> he himself<MG846> entered<MG1525> the synagogue<MG4864> and reasoned<MG1256> with the Jews<MG2453>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>When they asked<MG2065> him to stay<MG3306> for a longer<MG4183> time<MG5550>, he did not consent<MG1962>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>but took<MG657> leave<MG657> of them and said<MG3004>, “I will return<MG344> to you again<MG3825> if God<MG2316> wills<MG2309>,” and he set<MG321> sail<MG321> from Ephesus<MG2181>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>When he had landed<MG2718> in Caesarea<MG2542>, he went<MG305> up<MG305> <i>to Jerusalem</i> and greeted<MG782> the church<MG1577>, and went<MG2597> down<MG2597> to Antioch<MG490>. <p class="hdg">Third Missionary Journey</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And after spending<MG4160> some<MG5100> time<MG5550> <i>there,</i> he left<MG1831> and passed<MG1330> successively<MG2517> through<MG1330> the Galatian<MG1054> region<MG5561> and Phrygia<MG5435>, strengthening<MG4741> all<MG3956> the disciples<MG3101>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> a Jew<MG2453> named<MG3686> Apollos<MG625>, an Alexandrian<MG221> by birth<MG1085>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>an eloquent<MG3052> man<MG435>, came<MG2658> to Ephesus<MG2181>; and he was proficient<MG1415> in the Scriptures<MG1124>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>This<MG3778> man<MG3778> had been<MG1510> instructed<MG2727> in the way<MG3598> of the Lord<MG2962>; and being<MG2204> fervent<MG2204> in spirit<MG4151>, he was accurately<MG199> speaking<MG2980> and teaching<MG1321> things about<MG4012> Jesus<MG2424>, being<MG1987> acquainted<MG1987> only<MG3440> with the baptism<MG908> of John<MG2491>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/18-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>he began<MG757> speaking<MG3955> boldly<MG3955> in the synagogue<MG4864>.
