Based on a theoretical framework that recognises how gender based violence in conflict historically has been ignored and excluded, this thesis explores through a qualitative content analysis how this is being challenged by celebrity diplomacy and activism, in this case performed by Angelina Jolie. A second framework is applied that enables the study to understand how celebrities can act within humanitarian work to create awareness. The result shows a privileged person using her inherent position to change injustices with tools of affinity, empathy, sympathy and experiential authority. To increase the awareness of sexual violence used as a tactic of war and the injustices this along with ignorance and exclusion has led to. A moral imperative to alleviate the suffering of others, driven by sympathy and compassion, is an expression of power that reinforces social hierarchies. This tension within humanitarianism raises key concerns for both scholars and practitioners alike. Is humanitarian governance more about ensuring order than about changing lives? Celebrity activists have also been criticized for advocating drastic measures like military intervention, and for aggressively pursuing the fulfilment of arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court at the expense of quiet diplomacy and reconciliation, ultimately making matters worse. This article examines the role of two Hollywood celebrities—Mia Farrow and George Clooney—in Sudan’s ‘messy war’. It claims that most proponents and critics of celebrity activism overestimate the role that these two individuals played. It develops around two arguments. First, in current humanitarian environment advocacy has lost its original positive connotations and has assumed negative implications, thus transforming it into a 'good word gone bad'. Second, agency-media relationship engendered drawbacks for the humanitarians that pushed them to explore the use of vectors alternative to the media. The work analyses the evolution of humanitarian advocacy, identifies the main reasons for its deviation and provides conceptual and theoretical frameworks for its understanding. It investigates two initiatives in line with advocacy's original meaning. It examines the grounds for the agencies to reshape their relationships with the media, and to explore alternative vectors to convey their messages. It concludes with a study of the reasons, effectiveness, advantages and challenges behind the use of celebrity advocacy. Celebrity activists have also been criticized for advocating drastic measures like military intervention, and for aggressively pursuing the fulfilment of arrest warrants by the International Criminal Court at the expense of quiet diplomacy and reconciliation, ultimately making matters worse. This article examines the role of two Hollywood celebrities—Mia Farrow and George Clooney—in Sudan’s ‘messy war’. It claims that most proponents and critics of celebrity activism overestimate the role that these two individuals played. This book examines this new phenomenon, arguing that celebrity humanitarianism legitimates, and indeed promotes, neoliberal capitalism and global inequality.
