Stirchley is part of South Bradford hundred in the district of <a href="/wiki/Wellington,_Shropshire" title="Wellington, Shropshire">Wellington</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-Hundred_divisions_4-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Hundred_divisions-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> </p><p>Stirchley was a small community based on agriculture.<sup id="cite_ref-Stirchley_History_5-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Stirchley_History-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> In 1612 the village was initially founded by 3 farms and 5 cottages,<sup id="cite_ref-Stirchley_History_5-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Stirchley_History-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> but as industry spread at the beginning of the 19th century, the population of the settlement grew to 333 in 1881,<sup id="cite_ref-Population_statistics_6-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Population_statistics-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> where it peaked. The population declined steeply until the 1940s,<sup id="cite_ref-Population_statistics_6-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Population_statistics-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> however not just the population, but the settlement has grown substantially since, particularly as the parish now includes <a href="/wiki/Brookside,_Telford" title="Brookside, Telford">Brookside</a>,<sup id="cite_ref-Parish_Council_7-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Parish_Council-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> which neighbours Stirchley meaning the headcount for the census<sup id="cite_ref-Census_1-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Census-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> data is much larger. Until the 19th century, the parish only contained 4 main farmsteads and a small number of cottages nearby the church,<sup id="cite_ref-Stirchley_History_5-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Stirchley_History-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> but this changed when the population increased and affected the settlement pattern. Due to the industry taking place in the surrounding area houses were converted into cottages for the workers in the collieries<sup id="cite_ref-Stirchley_History_5-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Stirchley_History-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> and <a href="/wiki/The_Iron_Bridge" title="The Iron Bridge">ironworks</a>. Furthermore, after 1821 many more houses were being built including Clerks Row which was built in 1840<sup id="cite_ref-Stirchley_History_5-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Stirchley_History-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> to house the ironwork's managers. The increasing size of the settlement led to a licensed ale house, named the Rose and Crown, and a village shop by the early 1840s.<sup id="cite_ref-A_history_of_Shropshire_8-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-A_history_of_Shropshire-8"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>8<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> John Marius Wilson,<sup id="cite_ref-Gazatteer_9-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Gazatteer-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> <i>Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales</i> (1870–72) wrote of how Stirchley was a Parish with a population of 310 and had a railway station. Also, 'the property was divided among a few<sup id="cite_ref-Gazatteer_9-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Gazatteer-9"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>9<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> suggesting many people shared houses. </p> <div class="mw-heading mw-heading3"><h3 id="Post-1960s">Post-1960s</h3><span class="mw-editsection"><span class="mw-editsection-bracket">[</span><a href="/w/index.php?title=Stirchley,_Shropshire&action=edit&section=3" title="Edit section: Post-1960s"><span>edit</span></a><span class="mw-editsection-bracket">]</span></span></div> <p>In the 1960s the district of Dawley (before it changed in the early 1970s to the district of <a href="/wiki/Telford" title="Telford">Telford</a><sup id="cite_ref-Formerly_Telford_10-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Formerly_Telford-10"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>10<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> ), was developed by corporations. In the early 1970s most of the farmsteads in the South East of the district which included Stirchley were destroyed to make room for housing estates<sup id="cite_ref-Stirchley_History_5-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Stirchley_History-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> for example, 500 private houses were built from 1972 creating the modern village of Stirchley that exists today. general the population rose until 1851 where there were 302 people living in the Parish, but soon after it declined and by 1891 the population was reduced by as much as 42.1%.<sup id="cite_ref-Population_statistics_6-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Population_statistics-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> From the beginning of the 20th century there were not any large scale demographic variations until the census in 1951 revealed 66 people died,<sup id="cite_ref-Population_statistics_6-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Population_statistics-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> most likely from the <a href="/wiki/World_War_I" title="World War I">first</a> and <a href="/wiki/World_War_II" title="World War II">second World Wars</a>.<sup id="cite_ref-nat_archive_16-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-nat_archive-16"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>16<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> In 1961 the parish had a population of 107.<sup id="cite_ref-Population_statistics_6-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Population_statistics-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> However, since Stirchley and Brookside combined as one Council Parish,<sup id="cite_ref-nat_archive_16-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-nat_archive-16"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>16<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> the penultimately recent Census data in 2001<sup id="cite_ref-Census_1-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Census-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> shows a much larger href="#cite_note-Social_status-17"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>17<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> From the 2001 Census, it can be seen that the majority of the population between that is situated in a quiet location one mile away from Telford town centre.
