The term "queen" can refer to the wife of a king, a female ruler, or a woman of high status. The Bible provides several examples of queens, each with unique accounts and contributions to the biblical history.

Queen of Sheba

One of the most notable queens mentioned in the Bible is the Queen of Sheba. Her account is found in 1 Kings 10:1-13 and 2 Chronicles 9:1-12. She visited King Solomon to test his wisdom with hard questions, bringing with her a great caravan of wealth. The Bible states, "When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon, the palace he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service and attire of his waiters, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he presented at the house of the LORD, it took her breath away" (1 Kings 10:4-5). Her visit highlights the fame of Solomon's wisdom and the international recognition of Israel's prosperity during his reign.

Queen Esther

Esther, a Jewish woman who became the queen of Persia, is another significant figure. Her account is recounted in the Book of Esther. Chosen by King Xerxes (Ahasuerus) to be his queen, Esther played a crucial role in saving the Jewish people from a plot to annihilate them. Her courage and faith are exemplified in Esther 4:16, where she declares, "Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maidens will fast as you do. After that, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish" . Esther's account is celebrated during the Jewish festival of Purim.

Queen Jezebel

Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab of Israel, is often remembered for her idolatry and opposition to the prophet Elijah. Her account is found in 1 Kings 16:31-33 and 2 Kings 9. Jezebel promoted the worship of Baal and Asherah, leading Israel into sin. Her influence over Ahab and her persecution of God's prophets are condemned in the biblical narrative. Her death, as prophesied by Elijah, is recorded in 2 Kings 9:30-37, where she is thrown from a window and consumed by dogs, fulfilling the word of the Lord.

Queen Athaliah

Athaliah, the daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, became queen of Judah by seizing the throne after the death of her son, King Ahaziah. Her reign is marked by violence and idolatry, as she attempted to exterminate the royal line of David. Her account is found in 2 Kings 11 and 2 Chronicles 22-23. Athaliah's downfall came when the priest Jehoiada led a coup to restore the rightful heir, Joash, to the throne. Her execution is described in 2 Kings 11:16, "So they seized her as she reached the horses’ entrance to the palace grounds, and there she was put to death" .

Queen Vashti

Vashti, the queen of Persia before Esther, is mentioned in the Book of Esther. She is known for her refusal to appear before King Xerxes and his guests during a banquet, as recorded in Esther 1:10-12. Her defiance led to her removal as queen, setting the stage for Esther's rise to the throne. Vashti's account highlights themes of dignity and the consequences of defying royal authority.

These queens, among others, illustrate the diverse roles women played in biblical history, from rulers and influencers to protectors of their people. Their accounts provide insight into the complexities of leadership, faith, and morality within the biblical context.
Greek
2582.
