And He, answering, said to him, <FR>"You say <i>it</i>."<Fr> <A name="5"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And Pilate said to the high priests and to the multitudes, "I find no fault in This Man." <A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>But they were the more urgent, saying, "He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout the whole of Judaea, and beginning from Galilee even to this place."<p> <A name="7"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus before Herod<p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But Pilate, hearing <i>it</i>, asked if the Man were a Galilaean.<p> <A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And, learning that He was of Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him up to Herod, who also was in Jerusalem in these days.<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now Herod, seeing Jesus, rejoiced exceedingly; for he was wishing for a long <i>time</i> to see Him, because he had heard concerning Him; and he was hoping to see some sign wrought by Him. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And he kept questioning Him in many words; but He answered him nothing. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And the high priests and the scribes stood, vehemently accusing Him. <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And Herod with his soldiers, having set Him at naught, and having mocked Him, having thrown over Him a gorgeous robe, sent Him back to Pilate. <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And Herod and Pilate became friends with each other on that day; for before they were at enmity between themselves.<p> <A name="14"></a><p class="hdg">The Crowd Chooses Barabbas<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#15">Matthew 27:15–23</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#6">Mark 15:6–11</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>And Pilate, calling together the high priests and the rulers and the people, <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>said to them, "Ye brought to me This Man as One perverting the people and, behold, I, having examined Him before you, found no fault in This Man <i>regarding</i> those things of which ye accuse Him; <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>no, nor yet Herod; for he sent Him hack to us; and, behold, nothing worthy of death has been done by Him. <A name=""></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Chastising <i>Him</i>, therefore, I will release Him" <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-16.htm"><b>17</b></a></span><i>OMITTED TEXT.</i><p> <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But they cried out again with all the multitude, saying, "Away with Him! and release to us Barabbas!"? <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span><i>one</i> who, indeed, because of a certain insurrection made in the city, and of murder, was cast into prison. <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And again Pilate called to them, wishing to release Jesus. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>But they kept calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify Him!" <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil did This <i>Man</i> do? I found in Him nothing worthy of death. Chastising Him, therefore, I will release Him." <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But they were urgent, with loud voices, asking that He might be crucified. And their voices prevailed. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>And Pilate gave judgment that their request should be executed; <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>and he released him who, because of insurrection and murder, had been cast into prison, for whom they were asking; but he delivered up Jesus to their will.<p> <A name="27"></a><p class="hdg">The Crucifixion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#32">Matthew 27:32–44</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#21">Mark 15:21–32</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#16">John 19:16–27</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>And, when they led Him away, laying hold of one Simon a Cyrenian, coming from the country, they laid on him the cross, to bear <i>it</i> after Jesus.<p> <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And there was following Him a great multitude of people, and of women, who bewailed and lamented Him <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>But, turning towards them, Jesus said, <FR>"Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children;<Fr> <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><FR>for, behold, <i>the</i> days are coming in which they will say, 'Happy the barren, and the wombs which bore not, and breasts that gave not suck.'<Fr> <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><FR>Then will they begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us;' and to the hills, 'Cover us;'<Fr> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span><FR>for, if they do these things in the green tree, what shall be done in the dry?"<Fr><p> <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>And there were being led two others also, malefactors, with Him to be put to death.<p> <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And, when they came to the place that is called "<i>The</i> Skull," there they crucified Him, and the malefactors; one on the right hand, and the other on the left. <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>And Jesus said, <FR>"Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do!"<Fr> And, dividing His garments among <i>them</i>, they cast lots. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also were scoffing at Him, saying, "He saved others; let Him save Himself! if This is the Christ of God, the Chosen!" <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>And the soldiers also were mocking Him, coming near, and offering Him vinegar, <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>and saying, "If Thou art the King of the Jews, save Thyself!" <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>And there was also an inscription over Him, "THE KING OF THE JEWS, THIS!"<p> <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>And one of the suspended malefactors kept reviling Him, saying, "Art not Thou the Christ? Save Thyself and us!" <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>But the other, answering and rebuking him, said, "Do you not fear God, seeing that you are in the same condemnation? <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>and we, indeed, righteously; for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds: but This Man did nothing amiss." <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>And he said, "Jesus, remember me, when Thou comest in Thy Kingdom." <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>And He said to him, <FR>"Verily I say to you, "To-day you shall be with Me in Paradise."<Fr><p> <A name="45"></a><p class="hdg">The Death of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/27.htm#45">Matthew 27:45–56</a>; <a href ="../mark/15.htm#33">Mark 15:33–41</a>; <a href ="../john/19.htm#28">John 19:28–30</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>And it was already about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land till the ninth hour, <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/luke/23-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>the sun's <i>light</i> failing.
