Die dazugehörigen Öfen wurden anlässlich eines Umbaus abgebrochen und als Bauschutt im Boden eingelagert. Die Kachelbruchstücke liessen sich mindestens 198 Kachelindividuen zuweisen. Aus 126 Kacheln konnte eine Ofenrekonstruktion vorgenommen werden. Die Besonderheit des Ofenkörpers besteht in der Kombination verschiedener Dekorationstechniken. So setzen sich die Sichtflächen der Eckkacheln aus zwei in Schablonentechnik aufgetragenen Kreismustern und einer reliefierten Ecklisene zusammen. Die Kacheln datieren aus der Zeit um 1600. Der Ofen lässt sich mit der Hafnerfamilie Hug in Verbindung bringen, die hier zwischen 1750 und 1830 über vier Generationen hinweg ihr Handwerk betrieb. Wichtig sind insbesondere die dabei gefundenen Kacheln, die zweifelsfrei der Hug'schen Werkstatt zugewiesen werden können. Diese Funde erlauben es, verschiedene unsignierte, in Basel und in der weiteren Nordwestschweiz stehende Öfen als Produkte dieser hier ansässigen Hafnerfamilie zu identifizieren.-Interessant ist insbesondere auch die Wiederentdeckung eines im 20. Jahrhundert (von Arlesheim oder von Basel?) nach Schloss Wartenfels (Lostorf, SO) verbrachten Hug-Ofens. Inhalt 87 Vorbemerkungen 88 1. Das Umfeld Arlesheim). Wenig später (ab 1763) lieferte auch die Frischingsche Fayence-Fabrik an der Lorraine in Bern erfolgreich Öfen Im 18. Jahrhundert erlebte Basel eine starke Zunahme der Bau-nach Basel (Abb. 3) 6. Diese waren bedeutend günstiger und in tätigkeit. Die günstigen wirtschaftlichen Verhältnisse, vorab der Qualität der Malereien nur unwesentlich schwächer 7 (vgl. dank der Seidenbandfabrikation, führten zum Abbruch vieler Öfen im Wildtschen Haus, im Haus zum Raben, im Stadthaus, alter Liegenschaften und dem anschliessenden Neubau gross-im Haus zum Kirschgarten, im Wendelstörferhof). zügiger Häuser mit angrenzenden Fabrikationsgebäuden und Lagerräumlichkeiten. Im Zug dieser Entwicklung wuchs auch der Wunsch nach zeitgemässen modernen Interieurs und damit nicht zuletzt auch nach neuen Kachelöfen. Vorerst konnte der Zürcher Hafner Leonhard Locher (1695-1766) die Nachfrage nach in vornehmer Zurückhaltung blauweiss bemalten Erzeugnissen bis 1760 stillen (vgl. Öfen im Haus zum Auch der Zürcher Johann Heinrich Bachofen brachte mehrere Öfen nach Basel (ins Wildtsche Haus). Von Anton Rümeli, einem Wandermaler aus dem Schaffhausischen, haben wir in Basel im Verlauf der letzten Jahre bei unserer Arbeit schliesslich drei vollständig blauweiss bemalte Kachelöfen wiederentdeckt (alle zwischen 1745 und 1749, in den Häusern zum Geist und zum Rosengarten sowie im Kleinen Markgräflerhof, Abb. 4). Kirschgarten, an der St. Alban-Vorstadt 82, am Leonhardskirch-Dem Wunsch der Basler Kunden nach «lebhaft silhouettierten platz 2, im Holsteinerhof [Abb. 1], im Haus zur Sandgrube, im Öfen» für die «neuen, mit Rokokostukkaturen reich verzierten RamsteinerhoF usw.). Schnell wurden auch die Prachtsöfen der Innenräume» 8 konnten die Basler Hafner vorerst kaum ent-Elsässer Paul Hannong und Frarn;:ois Paul Acker aus Strassburg sprechen. Einmal fehlten ihnen die Kenntnisse zum Herstellen bekannt, welche die Motive nun häufig vielfarbig und neu auch feiner Fayence-Glasuren und zum Anbringen buntfarbiger Mamit echtem Rot auf die Kacheloberfläche auftrugen (Abb. 2). lereien und plastischen Zierrats. Kachelöfen gehören zu den wichtigsten Ausstattungsgegenständen des Hauses. Sie nehmen eine zentrale Position im wichtigsten Wohnraum, der Stube, ein. Über ihre technische Funktion als Wärmespender während der kalten Jahreszeit hinaus sind sie das ganze Jahr über Repräsentanten der gesellschaftlichen Stellung und der religiösen und politischen Ausrichtung des Haushaltsvorstandes und seiner Familie. Schlüsselobjekte dreier archäologischer Fundkomplexe aus Südwestdeutschland, zwei aus Freiburg und einer aus der umgebenden Region, dem Breisgau, sollen beispielhaft dahingehend untersucht werden, ob sich mit ihnen etwas über die Geisteshaltung der Hersteller und Konsumenten im jeweiligen historischen Kontext aussagen lässt. Ofenkacheln mit figürlichen Darstellungen sind mehr als andere archäologische Objekte auch Spiegel des Zeitgeistes. Sie können diesen nicht nur illustrieren, sondern eigene Geschichten erzählen, wenn genügend Kontext und Bildinhalt vorhanden sind, der dabei hilft, die Botschaft zu entschlüsseln. Alle drei Beispiele fußen auf archäologischen Funden und Befunden, die von mir und anderen in früheren Arbeiten bereits ausführlich vorgelegt wurden.
