The name "Pathros" is derived from the Hebrew "פַּתְרוֹס" (Pathrôs), which is believed to be a transliteration of the Egyptian term "Pꜣ-tꜣ-rsy," meaning "the land of the south." This aligns with its geographical location in the southern part of ancient Egypt, known as Upper Egypt.

Biblical References:

Pathros is referenced in several passages of the Old Testament, highlighting its significance in biblical history and prophecy.

1. Isaiah 11:11 · "On that day the Lord will extend His hand a second time to recover the remnant of His people from Assyria, from Egypt, from Pathros, from Cush, from Elam, from Shinar, from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea." This verse is part of a prophecy concerning the future regathering of the Israelites. Pathros is listed among the places from which God will gather His people, indicating its role as a place of exile or residence for some Israelites.

2. Jeremiah 44:1, 15 · "This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the Jews living in the land of Egypt—in Migdol, Tahpanhes, and Memphis—and in the land of Pathros..." and "Then all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to other gods, along with all the women standing by—a great assembly—and all the people living in the land of Egypt and in Pathros, said to Jeremiah..." These passages describe the Jewish community that settled in Egypt, including Pathros, after the fall of Jerusalem. The context reveals the idolatrous practices that some of these exiles engaged in, which Jeremiah condemned.

3. Ezekiel 29:14 · "I will restore the fortunes of Egypt and bring them back to the land of Pathros, the land of their origin. There they will be a lowly kingdom." In this prophecy, Ezekiel speaks of the future restoration of Egypt, with Pathros being identified as the ancestral homeland of the Egyptians. This highlights Pathros as a significant cultural and historical region within Egypt.

Historical and Cultural Context:

Pathros, as part of Upper Egypt, was a region of great antiquity and cultural richness. It was known for its temples, monuments, and as a center of worship for various Egyptian deities. The area was characterized by its distinct cultural identity compared to Lower Egypt, with Thebes (modern Luxor) being one of its most prominent cities.

During the time of the biblical prophets, Egypt was a place of refuge for many Israelites fleeing from political turmoil and conquest in their homeland. The presence of Jewish communities in Pathros and other parts of Egypt is well-documented in the biblical narrative, reflecting the historical interactions between the Israelites and Egyptians.

Theological Significance:

Pathros serves as a symbol of both judgment and hope in the biblical text. It is a place where God's people experienced exile and idolatry, yet it is also a location from which God promises to gather His remnant. The prophetic references to Pathros underscore the themes of divine sovereignty, judgment, and redemption that run throughout the Scriptures.

In summary, Pathros is a region deeply embedded in the biblical narrative, representing both the historical realities of the Jewish diaspora in Egypt and the prophetic visions of restoration and divine intervention.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Pathros
Pathrusim, mouthful of dough; persuasion of ruin
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Pathros
(region of the south), a part of Egypt, and a Mizraite tribe whose people were called Pathrusim.
