In European and Brazilian varieties of Portuguese, vowel nasality has been considered both a phonological (actual nasal vowels) and a phonetic (nasalized vowels) feature. Herein, we share an acoustic analysis demonstrating that nasalized vowels in SVP are 48% longer than their oral counterparts. Thus, a nasalized vowel could correspond to an underlying sequence of an oral vowel followed by a nasal consonant. In this sense, a nasal coda\u0026amp;#39;s nasal feature would spread to the continuous vowel on the left. After that, the nasal coda, which triggers the process, is deleted at the segmental tier without changing the syllable length. This suggests a biphonemic interpretation of vowel nasality in SVP. Accordingly, there are no phonological nasal vowels in SVP. As São Tomé and Príncipe is a multilingual country, we investigate the influences triggered or reinforced by linguistic contact between Portuguese and other languages spoken in the country, especially Santome.","author":[{"@context":"https://schema.org","@type":"Person","name":"Amanda Macedo According to the hypothesis, a longer duration of nasal vowel is a manifestation, at the level of phonetic implementation, of an underlying bimoraic representation which cause nasal vowels to be longer than oral vowels and also longer than allophonic nasal vowels, whose representation is monomoraic. We recorded three repetitions of 15 words representing five different contexts by subjects of the Belo Horizonte dialect. Analysis by mixed effects models showed that the hypothesis is only borne out in the behavior of [a] before plosive and [i] before fricative. The hypothesis was then recast in terms of moraic primacy: speakers show greater variation in their time of articulation in different segments when such segments are occupied by just one mora. We analyzed the variation in vowel duration for oral and nasal [a, i] when followed by plosive or fricative. Although vowels are longer before plosives than fricatives, this difference was here only attested in oral vowels. This is consistent with the hypothesis that two morae use up more phonological time, thus constraining coarticulatory variation in phonetic timing.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"On the Duration of Nasal Vowels in Brazilian Portuguese","attachmentId":43211250,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/22612368/On_the_Duration_of_Nasal_Vowels_in_Brazilian_Portuguese","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Variation in nasality between nasal and nasalized vowels in in Brazilian Portuguese: a pilot study
Luciana Marques

The difference in degree of nasality between oral, phonemic nasal, and coarticulated nasalized low vowel /a/ ([ɐ ̃ ]) will be analyzed. The method follows that proposed by Chen (1997), in which acoustic nasality can be measured by the difference between the amplitude of the vowel's first formant (A1), and the amplitude of the nasal peak amplitude in the vowel's first or second harmonic (P0). The measurements were taken at three different time points (start, mid, end) in the vowel. The results show that the main difference between nasal and nasalized vowels is at the vowel's end, the nasal vowel being considered more nasal than its nasalized counterpart. This difference may hint on perceptual clues to distinguish nasal from nasalized vowels in Brazilian Portuguese.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Variation in nasality between nasal and nasalized vowels in in Brazilian Portuguese: a pilot study","attachmentId":49603325,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/29158974/Variation_in_nasality_between_nasal_and_nasalized_vowels_in_in_Brazilian_Portuguese_a_pilot_study","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Durational aspects of tautosyllabic vowel nasalization in (Brazilian) Portuguese: An airflow investigation
Rui Rothe-Neves

Journal of Portuguese Linguistics, 2021

This study investigates coarticulatory effects caused by the following consonant-either a stop or a fricative-on the duration of the oral and the nasalized portion of the nasal vowel and the nasal murmur in sequences within Portuguese words like tensa [ˈtẽsɐ] 'tense' versus tenta [ˈtẽtɐ] '(s/he) tries.' The results replicate previous observations that duration adjustments affect the vowel's nasalized portion, as is the case for languages in which the speaker intends nasalization. The second hypothesis is that adjustments in duration as a function of the following onset do not affect the nasalization duration, but only the timing of a nasal gesture relatively constant in duration. Results show that irrespective of the following consonant ([s] or [t]), nasalization remains constant in duration. However, a shorter nasal murmur or a more extended postnasal consonantal oral portion does not follow more extended vowel nasalization. As the entire VNC sequence increases on an individual basis, so does the nasalization. Still, increasing nasalization comes at a cost for the duration of the oral part of the vowel irrespective of [s, t]. These results are compatible with that speaking rate influences coordination timing between the beginning of the vowel and the beginning of nasalization.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Durational aspects of tautosyllabic vowel nasalization in (Brazilian) Portuguese: An airflow investigation","attachmentId":81981913,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/73471714/Durational_aspects_of_tautosyllabic_vowel_nasalization_in_Brazilian_Portuguese_An_airflow_investigation","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Perception and acoustics of vowel nasality in Brazilian Portuguese
Luciana Marques

Proceedings of Interpeech 2017, 2017

This study explores the relationship between identification, degree of nasality and vowel quality in oral, nasal and nasalized vowels in Brazilian Portuguese. Despite common belief that the language possesses contrastive nasal vowels, literature examination shows that nasal vowels may be followed by a nasal resonance, while nasalized vowels must be followed by a nasal consonant. It is argued that the nasal resonance may be the remains of a consonant that nasalizes the vowel, making nasal vowels simply coarticulatorily nasalized (e.g. [1]). If so, vowel nasality should not be more informative for the perception of a word containing a nasal vowel than for a word containing a nasalized vowel, as nasality is attributed to coarticulation. To test this hypothesis, randomized stimuli containing the first syllable of words with oral, nasal and nasalized vowels were presented to BP listeners who had to identify the stimuli original word. Preliminary results demonstrate that accuracy decreased for nasal and nasalized stimuli. A comparison between patterns of response to measured degrees of vowel acoustic nasality and formant values demonstrate that vowel quality differences may play a more relevant role in word identification than type of nasality in a vowel.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Perception and acoustics of vowel nasality in Brazilian Portuguese","attachmentId":62263965,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/42129024/Perception_and_acoustics_of_vowel_nasality_in_Brazilian_Portuguese","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Duration and phonological complexity: Comparing standard European Portuguese nasal vowels and oral diphthongs
Heglyn Pimenta

Phonetics and Phonology in Action, 2019

Portuguese nasal vowels have been described as being long and having a diphthong-like acoustic pattern (Hajek & Watson 2007) . They are therefore a complex topic both for phonetic description and phonological analysis. Phonologically, it has been proposed that nasality is directly associated (a) to the vowel /Ṽ/; (b) with an underlying nasal consonant in coda position /VN/; or (c) with a vocalic position in a complex nucleus /VṼ/. Even if (b) is the most commonly accepted proposal, I will show that the behaviour of nasal vowels suggests eliminating both (a) and (b), which leaves only proposal (c). Nasal vowels and oral diphthongs share some properties, such as behaving as heavy rhymes regarding stress assignment; allowing suffixation of the morpheme /-s/ without epenthesis; showing no resyllabification in external sandhi contexts; in addition to the fact that neither undergoes vowel reduction in unstressed positions. Assuming that length can be a correlate to phonological complexity, (c) will be supported if, in addition to the other similarities between diphthongs and nasal vowels, these objects are similar in length. To my knowledge, the length of Portuguese nasal vowels has never been compared to that of complex nuclei. To assess the respective length of nasal vowels and oral diphthongs, I compare the duration of oral vowels (V), nasal vowels (VN) and oral diphthongs (VG) in two contexts: word-finally (_#), and before a heterosyllabic consonant (_.C) . Results-show that oral vowels are statistically shorter than oral diphthongs, which have the same duration as nasal vowels (i.e. V <VG= VN). This provides a phonetic grounding for the representation of Portuguese nasal vowels as phonological diphthongs. Finally, I will address three additional facts: (i) while oral diphthongs behave as open syllables regarding rhotics, allowing a contrast between /r/ and /R/, nasal vowels trigger neutralization, just as coda consonants; (ii) Portuguese also has nasal diphthongs, which are almost in complementary distribution with nasal vowels, since the latter exist in all positions but are clearly dispreferred in final position, while the former are found almost exclusively in stressed final position; (iii) in non-standard varieties, nasal vowels and diphthongs can alternate. I propose a phonological representation of Portuguese nasality that motivates both the similarities and the differences between oral diphthongs and nasal vowels.
<div
