Social issues include the unsolved problems, the unanswered questions in human affairs, and the situations of conflict in society. However, the nature of dialogues being discursive, leads to framing of superficial development policies and programmes. Ironically, the path feinted for developments by the state, such as the " Capital Project " , are too comprehended by the people at large as indicators of development and progress. Contextualizing, such frivolous centrally and state funded development projects need critical questioning vis-à-vis the ongoing mode of development in Manipur. The admixture of all these factors has, in turn, shaped a new society with its own socioeconomic , cultural-politico specificities. Thus, as economic factors being the measures of the basic needs of a societal change, it influences every other factor to bring in concomitant changes in non-economic factors, resulting in a cycle of changes among the societies across the regions. The general objective of the study is to look into these relationships between changing economic factors and its effect on the changing societies at global, national, regional and sub-regional level. Industrial revolution in Europe, transition from feudalism to capitalism, emergence of concept of nation, slow and steady penetration of capitalism transcending boundaries of developed regions to less-developed regions of the world-barring from communist countries-is generally viewed as panacea for development. The interrelationship among economy, environment, and society has been viewed from the prism of development agenda set by the Western world. However, this paper, observed that the ramifications are different and heterogeneous across the globe. The main idea of ‘progress and development’ has been conceived in the light of the positivistic reductionist, empiricist and anthro¬pocentric enterprise introduced in Europe in the seventeenth century. However, the alternative world view of interconnectedness and holism is considered more relevant today. Modern science, like new physics, is recapitulating in many ways the ancient spiritual world view of integral living. In the light of such shifts, the idea of ‘development’ also needs to be reassessed, rethought and reoriented. The sacred world view is a unitary principle of cosmic interconnected¬ness in search of universal order and meaning of existence ― ecological cosmology. Is it possible to discern any sense of sacred in the ‘alternative development’ strategy?
