The sample was collected by filling out a questionnaire and taking blood samples to test liver and kidney functions. Results: This study found that the means of AST and ALT levels of exposed workers were lower than the control group, while the mean level of ALP was higher. Moreover, it did not find a relationship between qualification, years of experience, age, and level of liver enzymes of exposed participants, however, it reported a positive correlation between smoking and bilirubin level. On the other hand, there are no statistical differences between the two groups in the levels of urea and creatinine, but the mean of urea level was quite higher in the exposed group than non-exposed. Besides, there are no associations between urea and creatinine levels and age, qualification, smoking, and years of experience. Conclusion: This study demonstrated a clear association between exposure to benzene and its effect on the liver. The potential effect biomarkers evaluated were δ-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALA-D) activity, CD80 and CD86 expression in lymphocytes and monocytes, and serum interleukin-8 (IL-8). The influence of confounding factors and toluene co-exposure were considered. Results: Although exposures were below ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) limits, reduced ALA-D activity, decreased CD80 and CD86 expression in monocytes and increased IL-8 levels were found in the GSA group compared to the control subjects. Furthermore, according to multiple linear regression analysis, benzene exposure was associated to a decrease in CD80 and CD86 expression in monocytes. To provide insight into these processes, we carried out a cross-sectional study of 44 healthy workers currently exposed to benzene (median 8-hr time-weighted average; 31 ppm), and unexposed controls in Shanghai, China. Here we provide an overview of the study results on peripheral blood cell levels and somatic cell mutation frequency measured by the glycophorin A (GPA) gene loss assay and report on peripheral cytokine levels. All peripheral blood cell levels (i.e., total white blood cells, absolute lymphocyte count, platelets, red blood cells, and hemoglobin) were decreased among exposed workers compared to controls, with the exception of the red blood cell mean corpuscular volume, which was higher among exposed subjects. In contrast, peripheral cytokine levels (interleukin-3, interleukin-6, erythropoietin, granulocyte colonystimulating factor, tissue necrosis factor-a) in a subset of the most highly exposed workers (n = 11) were similar to values in controls (n = 11), suggesting that benzene does not affect these growth factor levels in peripheral blood. The GPA assay measures stem cell or precursor erythroid cell mutations expressed in peripheral red blood cells of MN heterozygous subjects, identifying NN variants, which result from loss of the GPA M allele and duplication of the N allele, and No variants, which arise from gene inactivation. The NN (but not NO) GPA variant cell frequency was elevated in the exposed workers compared with controls (mean ± SD, 13.9 ± 8.4 mutants per million cells versus 7.4 ± 5.2 per million cells, respectively; p=0.0002), suggesting that benzene produces gene-duplicating but not gene-inactivating mutations at the GPA locus in bone marrow cells of exposed humans. In Brazil, this exposure is one of the serious problems in workplaces, and many workers have been laid off their jobs due to this intoxication, particularly in the State of Bahia, the largest producer of benzene in Latin America, which is the area of this study. From a larger study to describe health effects and genetic polymorphisms among workers with chronic benzene poisoning (CBP), this previous specific investigation analyzes the association between CBP and the pattern of sub-populations of lymphocytes. The study was performed with a CBP group (n = 24) and a control group with other occupational diseases (n = 24); both were selected at the Workers Health Study Center in the State of Bahia, Brazil. Clinical and epidemiologic variables were collected from medical records and from a detailed questionnaire. The average age was similar in the two groups (51.1 and 50.7, respectively). Analyzing the mean proportions of the sub-populations of lymphocytes, statistically significant differences were found for T cytotoxic cells (TCD8) (27.9; 19.4; p = 0.002) and T helper memory cell (CD4CD45RO) (31.2; 37.0; p = 0.015), respectively, for the CBP group and control group. These results should be viewed with caution because of the small sample size, but they strengthen a previous impression that workers exposed to benzene have their immune system impaired, even in the long term, which may contribute to some disorders and carcinogenesis process. These workers must be strictly followed up in a medical surveillance program. This is a population-based-cross-sectional study was carried out to investigate the potential risk of exposure to benzene in Elobid city, Sudan, among Petrol Station workers. Short questionnaire was administered on the randomly chosen subjects to elicit demographic features of workers were recorded information on their exposure. And forty blood samples were collected and performed complete blood cell (CBC) and reticulocytes count for each participant. The data was entered and analyzed by SPSS prograrmme (version 16) and compared with international studies. In Result show that CBC parameters as follows : RBCs (Mean = 3.4±.6) (.00), Hb (Mean = 13.7±.5) (P value =.0.748), HCT(Mean = 41.9)(P value =.00), MCV(Mean = 77.9)(P value =.00), MCH(Mean =25.7)(P value =.00),MCHC(Mean = 32.7) P value =.00), RWDSD (Mean = 0.325) (.00), platelets count (Mean = 276.6),(P value=.045), TWBCs(Mean = 7.3±.6)(P value = .097), Retics count (Mean = 0.32) (.00).
