The general topic is the semantic use of space in grammatical constructions. Often, pointing is analyzed in signed languages as simple morphemes or even as non-linguistic gesture. An approach to pointing as a symbolically complex construction will be presented and exemplified with data from signed languages. Another grammatical construction unique to signed languages, placing, will be described and discussed, and two types of placing constructions will be demonstrated. Finally, the application of pointing and placing to discourse will be examined with special attention to tracking referents and the use of these grammatical constructions in the unique, spatial form of verb agreement in signed languages.

2019 1st Project Conference Case Marking and Information Structure in Ryukyuan Languages

Date

6/16/2019 (Sunday) 9:30-16:00

Place

National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics (Hall 2nd floor)

Language

Japanese

Contents

The topic of this year is Case Marking and Information Structure and the first conference of the year focuses on Ryukyuan languages.

Contact

h-oshima [at] ninjal.ac.jp (replace [at] with @)

No participation fee, no reservation required

Program

9:30-10:00
Registration

10:00-10:40
Use of focus markers in the Funaoki dialect of Southern Ryukyuan Yaeyaman

Yuko Urabe (Kyushu University)

10:40-11:20
Specificity and nominal case marking in Yaeyaman dialects

Natsuko Nakagawa (NINJAL)

11:20-11:30
Break

11:30-12:10
Case marking in Tsuken Dialect

Satomi Matayoshi (Okayama University)

12:10-13:20
Lunch break

13:20-14:00
Information Structure in the Iheya dialect of Northern Ryukyuan Okinawan

Carlino Salvatore (NINJAL/Hitotsubashi University)

14:00-14:40
Case and Focus particle clusters in Yoron dialect

Nana Toyama (University of the Ryukyus)

14:40-14:50
Break

14:50-15:30
Case markers in Northern Ryukyuan Amami dialects with a special focus on Tatsugo Ura dialect

Hiromi Shigeno (Hiroshima University of Economics)

15:30-15:50
Discussion

15:50-16:00
Closing remarks

National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics

10-2 Midori-cho Tachikawa Tokyo 190-8561
E-mail:kcelik@ninjal.ac.jp

Copyright © 2022 National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics.
