<A name="6"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>for we could have sold it for above two hundred denarys, and given them to the poor: and they inveighed against her. <A name="7"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>but Jesus said, let her alone, why do you disquiet her? <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>upon which he dispatch'd two of his disciples, and said to them: go into the city, and you will meet a man carrying a pitcher of water; follow him. <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and wherever he enters, say to the master of the house: "thus saith our master; where is the chamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?" <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>and he will shew you a large upper room ready furnished: there make preparation for us. <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>his disciples therefore went away, and being come into the city, they found every thing, as he had told them; and they prepared the paschal lamb.<p> <A name="18"></a><p class="hdg">The Last Supper<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#20">Matthew 26:20–30</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#14">Luke 22:14–23</a>; <a href ="../1_corinthians/11.htm#17">1 Corinthians 11:17–34</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>There he came in the evening with the twelve. <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>and as they sat eating, Jesus said, verily I say unto you, one of you that is eating with me, will betray me. <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and they were seized with sorrow, all successively asking him, is it I? <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>but he answered them, saying, it is one of the twelve, he that eats of the same mess with me. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>the son of man is going indeed, according to what is written of him: but wo to that man, by whom the son of man is betrayed: it would be better for that man, if he had never been born.<p> <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>When they had been eating, Jesus took bread, and having given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to them, and said, take it, this represents my body. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>and he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank of it. <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>and he said to them, this represents the effusion of my blood (the sanction of the new covenant) for mankind. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>but this I tell you, I will never more drink of this fruit of the vine, from this time forth to that day, when I shall drink with you of the spiritual wine in the kingdom of God.<p> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then, having sung an hymn, they went out towards the mount of Olives.<p> <A name="28"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#31">Matthew 26:31–35</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#31">Luke 22:31–38</a>; <a href ="../john/13.htm#36">John 13:36–38</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>and Jesus said to them, this night you will all be staggered upon my account: for it is written, "I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered." <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>but after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>upon which Peter said to him, tho' all should stagger, yet I will not. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Jesus said to him, verily I tell thee, to-day, even this night, before the cock crow twice, you will renounce me thrice. <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>but he urg'd it with more vehemence, tho' I should die with you, I will not renounce you, and all the rest affirm'd the same.<p> <A name="33"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus Prays at Gethsemane<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#36">Matthew 26:36–46</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#39">Luke 22:39–46</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>At length they came to a place call'd Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, stay here, whilst I shall be at prayer. <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>but he took with him Peter, James, and John, then he began to be in a great consternation and anguish of mind, and he said to them; my soul is exceeding sorrowful, <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>then advancing a little further, he fell on the ground, and prayed, that this anxiety might pass from him. <A name="37"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>saying, father, all things are possible to thee, take away this cup from me: nevertheless, not my will, but thine be done. <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Then he return'd, and having found them sleeping, he said to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? could you not watch one hour? <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-38.htm"><b>38</b></a></span>watch and pray, that you may not yield to temptation: the mind indeed is vigorous, but the body is weak. <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-39.htm"><b>39</b></a></span>Again he retired, and prayed, uttering the same words. <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-40.htm"><b>40</b></a></span>then he return'd and found them still sleeping, for their eyes were heavy, and they did not know how to give an answer. <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-41.htm"><b>41</b></a></span>after that he came a third time, and said to them, sleep on now and take your rest. 'tis done, the time is come, and the son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners. <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-42.htm"><b>42</b></a></span>rise, let us be going: see, the traitor is just upon us.<p> <A name="44"></a><p class="hdg">The Betrayal of Jesus<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#47">Matthew 26:47–56</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#47">Luke 22:47–53</a>; <a href ="../john/18.htm">John 18:1–14</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-43.htm"><b>43</b></a></span>All of a sudden, while he was yet speaking, appear'd Judas, one of the twelve, attended by a great number of people with swords and clubs, who were sent by the chief priests, the Scribes, and rulers. <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-44.htm"><b>44</b></a></span>now he that betrayed him, had given them this signal, you will see me salute one with a kiss, that's he: seize him, and don't let him escape. <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-45.htm"><b>45</b></a></span>then advancing, he went directly up to him, saying, master, master, and kissed him. <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-46.htm"><b>46</b></a></span>and they violently laid hands on him and secured him. <A name="48"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-47.htm"><b>47</b></a></span>but one of those that stood by, drew his sword against a servant of the high priest, and struck off his ear. <A name="49"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-48.htm"><b>48</b></a></span>but Jesus addressing himself to them, said, why do you come with swords and clubs against me, as if you were to apprehend some robber? <A name="50"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-49.htm"><b>49</b></a></span>I was daily among you, teaching in the temple, and you did not then seize upon me, but the scriptures are thereby accomplished. <A name="51"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-50.htm"><b>50</b></a></span>then all his disciples abandon'd him and fled.<p> <A name="52"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-51.htm"><b>51</b></a></span>But a certain youth, that was stript to his inmost vest, followed him, and was seized by the soldiers. <A name="53"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-52.htm"><b>52</b></a></span>but he slipt from his vest, and fled away naked.<p> <A name="54"></a><p class="hdg">Jesus before the Sanhedrin<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../matthew/26.htm#57">Matthew 26:57–68</a>; <a href ="../luke/22.htm#66">Luke 22:66–71</a>; <a href ="../john/18.htm#19">John 18:19–24</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-53.htm"><b>53</b></a></span>Jesus they led away to the high priest's, where all the chief priests, the rulers and Scribes, were assembled. <A name="55"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-54.htm"><b>54</b></a></span>Peter followed at a distance, even into the palace of the high priest: where he sat down among the servants to warm himself at the fire. <A name="56"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-55.htm"><b>55</b></a></span>Now the chief priests, and the whole council endeavour'd to get evidence against Jesus, to condemn him to die; but they found none. <A name="57"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-56.htm"><b>56</b></a></span>there were indeed several, who depos'd what was false against him: besides, what they deposed was insufficient. <A name="58"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-57.htm"><b>57</b></a></span>at last there appear'd some, who gave in false evidence against him, <A name="59"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-58.htm"><b>58</b></a></span>saying, we heard him say, "I will pull down this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands." <A name="60"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-59.htm"><b>59</b></a></span>but neither did this evidence appear sufficient. <A name="61"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-60.htm"><b>60</b></a></span>then the high priest rising up in the midst of the assembly, ask'd Jesus, saying, have you nothing to plead for your self? what say you to the evidence they give against you? <A name="62"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-61.htm"><b>61</b></a></span>but Jesus remain'd silent, and gave no answer, then the high priest asked him again, and said to him, art thou the Christ, the son of the most High? <A name="63"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-62.htm"><b>62</b></a></span>and Jesus answered, I AM, and ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. <A name="64"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/mark/14-63.htm"><b>63</b></a></span>then the high priest rent his robes, and said to the council, what occasion is there for any more witnesses?
