For the Maya, the house-lineage debate hinges in part on the role of biological kinship in society. Specific debates center on whether the lineages were patrilineal or incorporated some kind of double-descent reckoning, how descent was combined with locality to define a group, and the status of lineage-outsiders within a group. It is argued here that Maya social organization is better approached within the contemporary critique of kinship, replacing "lineage" with Lévi-Strauss's model of the "house"--a corporate group maintaining an estate perpetuated by the recruitment of members whose relationships are expressed "in the language" of kinship and affinity and affirmed by purposeful actions. In this perspective, the operation of corporate groups is the primary concern, and relationships construed in terms of consanguinity and affinity are seen as strategies pursued to enhance and On the one hand, proponents of segmentary lineage models miss ambiguities between filiation and descent, residential and corporate groups in the Maya ethnographies they use for their analogies. On the other hand, supporters of Lévi-Strauss's house model fail to appreciate the relative instead of absolute differences between descent theory and alliance theory that underlie lineage and house models and make it difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish between them archaeologically. Both look to descriptive, largely static types derived from elsewhere and then argue which best fits Classic Maya society rather than build models that define the relevant components of social organization—filiation, descent, alliance, residence—and then theorize how differently patterned relations between these components might yield the institutional groupings we find on (or in the case ‘house’ as a social unit has led to an extensive use of this concept by many researchers in order to understand Classic Maya society, especially the elite and dominant groups. The ‘house’, as proposed by Lévi-Strauss, is fundamental for his house society model and implies the use of a variety of ways to establish social relations that are not only based on consanguinity but also on affinity, considering as well endogamy, exogamy and other social phenomena that are mutually exclusive in other social organization models. The complexity of the study of kinship and its interaction with the political structure calls for an interdisciplinary research program, in this case combining methods of archaeology, bioarchaeology, epigraphy, ethnography, history, iconography, and social anthropology, among others. As a first step this article will approach the problem from archaeological and epigraphic perspectives including, to a lesser extent, some iconographic data. The case of study is the Kanu’l entity with a focus on the strategies that this dynasty implemented to weave a broad net of sociopolitical power based on social relations that include kinship. Recent scholarship, however, has indicated that kinship and lineage, when considered as the products of social activity, can make important contributions to studies of living and past populations. This paper explores lineage as a model of social organization distinguished by specific activities practiced by members of Late Classic Maya social groups. This model is derived from cross-cultural literature on lineages, but practices associated with lineage organization are historically and culturally specific. A suite of archaeological correlates, based on practices endemic to the Late Classic Maya, is evaluated against a test case from northwestern Belize.
