After the publication of the first four volumes of an intended thirteen volume printed edition, a decision was made to change the format of the dictionary to a digital edition available online. This new medium has had to accommodate the already published printed material as well as unprinted and not fully edited material. The workshop aimed to identify common problems and discuss possible future collaborations. Discussions focused on various aspects of digitization, including access to digital resources, the use of research tools, and the long-term archiving of data. The importance of developing a joint strategy to meet the challenges of digitization was emphasized. A major outcome of the workshop was the establishment of a research group, which will focus on networking, promoting standards, and preserving digital data. This paper describes recent attempts to create two-way links between the growing body of digital texts encoded using TEI XML and the dictionary’s word list, which forms the basis of the published dictionary. The process involves design challenges in bringing together very different digital structures, namely the text in a XML tree structure, and the dictionary in a relational database structure. Because of the very high levels of accuracy demanded by the end-users of the dictionary (particularly researchers in Old Norse studies), the linking process can only be automated for unambiguous cases, with remaining links entered manually. The application and interface that assists this process attempts to minimise the trade-off between automation and accuracy, and adds a range of tools to assist with the human lemmatising process. We were able to achieve linking of lemmas in 90.4% of instances where the lemma was recorded in the TEI text, with very high levels of accuracy. The database combines formally interpreted and richly interlinked onomastic data with digitized versions of the medieval manuscripts from which the data originate and information on the tokens' context. The structure of NordiCon is inspired by other online historical given name dictionaries. It takes up challenges reported on in previous works, such as how to cover material properties of a name token and how to define lemmatization principles, and elaborates on possible solutions.
