Right from Wright’s influential theorization on the issue of media and culture, researchers have often returned a low score for the media. But studies which have adopted a comprehensive, stakeholders’ approach to the study of media and culture are few. Through a qualitative approach, this study attempted to examine the assessment of Nigerian media as cultural agents by stakeholders—audiences, producers, culture experts and cable vendors. Interviews and focus group discussions showed that the media in Nigeria promote cultural growth as they transmit cultural skills to newer generations and facilitate intra-national cultural contact through intercultural education. As they transmit cultural values, they also indirectly set the standard but the media alone cannot be expected to standardize culture. In their bid to please their audiences so as to be on the good page of the advertiser’s book, the media permit foreign programs thereby permitting cultural invasion. Backed by the advertiser’s money, the audiences have become a rather strong factor in the cultural programming decisions which producers make, and if blames are to be apportioned for cultural dysfunctions, the audiences therefore have a share.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"CULTURAL FUNCTIONS AND DYSFUNCTIONS OF MEDIA IN NIGERIA - AYOBAMI OJEBODE, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA","attachmentId":37199044,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/11779235/CULTURAL_FUNCTIONS_AND_DYSFUNCTIONS_OF_MEDIA_IN_NIGERIA_AYOBAMI_OJEBODE_UNIVERSITY_OF_IBADAN_NIGERIA","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Impact of Western Television Programmes on the Cultural Values of Nigerian Youths - by Adagun Azeez
Azeez Adagun

Considering the prominence of TV as a visual medium, this study sought to know the influence of media imperialism and the claim that it has affected and undermined local Nigerian norms and values. It specifically examines the influence of Western media content on the cultural values of Nigerian youths using English Premier League (EPL) clubs supporters in Abeokuta-North Local Government Area (LGA) as a case study. The accelerating process of globalisation and the increasing interconnections between cultures involve an unprecedented challenge to modern sociology. The explosion of Western products (particularly American) across the globe has rocked the culture and values of several societies. The spread of these products has raised questions and concerns regarding United States’ dominance in the cultural sphere. Consequently, it has prompted many to charge the U.S. with a new form of colonialism − cultural imperialism. Thus, the need to apply cultural imperialism thesis as the underlying theoretical framework for the study. Finding out the Influence of Western TV programmes on the cultural values of Nigerian Youths would be impossible unless the investigation uses meticulous procedures that are systematic, imaginative, logical and accurate. For this study, the survey method was adopted because it provides the best means of collecting the views of youths regarding the influence of TV on their perceptions, ideologies and behaviours. The study sample comprising 30 youths in Abeokuta-North LGA was selected using three sampling techniques: stratified sampling, simple random sampling and convenience sampling. Interviews were conducted personally by the researcher to gather data from the field. In the process of the data analysis the researcher engaged in memoing and transcription of the data. The researcher then embarked on coding and developing category systems. Majority of them do not take pride in anything Nigerian: fashion, food, language, music and literature. Their behavioral attitudes show poor African cultural orientation. This study therefore examined the impact of Western television programmes on the African cultural identity of Nigerian youths A quantitative survey research questionnaire was administered on 274 respondents drawn from Afe Babalola University and Ekiti State University to determine the impact of Western television programmes on the cultural values of Nigerian youths. Cultural Imperialism and Social Learning theories were applied to test a null hypothesis that Western television Programmes have no significant relationship on the cultural values of Nigerian Youths. Chi Square was used to test the hypothesis. Result showed that western television programmes have negative influence on the cultural values of Nigerian youths: 274/5 < 54.8, at 05 level of significance. Findings revealed that majority of youths watch Western television programmes for fashion and entertainment. Respondents agreed that Western television programmes glamourize risky behaviours: alcoholism, drug abuse and sexual promiscuity. The study recommends the promotion of African cultural values on Nigerian television. The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) should effectively censor foreign programmes on Nigerian TV channels.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Western Television Programmes and the African Cultural Identity of Nigerian Youths","attachmentId":117342745,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/122739058/Western_Television_Programmes_and_the_African_Cultural_Identity_of_Nigerian_Youths","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

The Trojan Horse of Globalizing Media & Changing Identities in Nigeria
Liwhu Betiang

The Media Convergence Age has witnessed some 'techno-apartheid' or digital divide, mass movements of people, ideas and material culture across geographical borders; all propelled by media technology. Consequently there's 'cultural-browning' among nationalities but specifically in the Nigerian case, deep implications for whatever remains of an 'authentic' national cultural identity. Drawing from literature and empirical observation over the past fifty years within two generations of Nigerians, this study shows how globalization interpenetrates a nation-space; and how it is altering/changing the face of Nigerian nationals, through such globalizing weapons like electronic/media technologies, infotainment programming, televangelism, consumerism, as well as corporate merchandising of material culture. This study becomes significant when seen against the background of Nigerian core cultural values which are being gradually renegotiated in favour of what may be considered as dominant Euro-American values. This phenomenon portends deep-running implications for a nation state whose peoples are primarily ethnic-bound and fundamentally assertive; caught within an absence of a functional, proactive national audiovisual policy.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"The Trojan Horse of Globalizing Media \u0026 Changing Identities in Nigeria","attachmentId":48219906,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/27924042/The_Trojan_Horse_of_Globalizing_Media_and_Changing_Identities_in_Nigeria","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Culture and Nigerian Identity in the Print Media
Onyinyechi Nwaolikpe

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Culture and Nigerian Identity in the Print Media","attachmentId":33566786,"attachmentType":"docx","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/6881634/Culture_and_Nigerian_Identity_in_the_Print_Media","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

GLOBAL MEDIA AND CULTURAL HYBRIDIZATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY IN NIGERIA
Journal of Social Sciences COES&RJ-JSS

GLOBAL MEDIA AND CULTURAL HYBRIDIZATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY IN NIGERIA, 2014

This study examines measures employed by global media as they aid cultural hybridization in the 21st century Nigeria. This paper contends that cultural hybridization is an emerging trend which occurs as a result of the romance between two cultures through transnational media communication technologies. This paper also contends that cultural hybridization - the breeding of newer cultures – has occurred in Nigeria with the aid of transnational communications through the global mass media, including satellite and cable television. All these are viewed in this work as developments made possible in the era of postmodernism and globalization. The study also articulates the implications of cultural interaction between Nigerian cultures and foreign cultures and attempts a way forward for stability in the wake of cultural hybridization in the 21st century Nigeria.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"GLOBAL MEDIA AND CULTURAL HYBRIDIZATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY IN NIGERIA","attachmentId":40896158,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/19880594/GLOBAL_MEDIA_AND_CULTURAL_HYBRIDIZATION_IN_THE_21ST_CENTURY_IN_NIGERIA","alternativeTracking":true}">downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Western Films And Teenagers In Nigerian Society: The Question Of Cultural Promotion
Dr. Semiu Bello

2012

This study examines the impact of western films on teenagers as it affects the promotion of cultural heritage in African society with particular reference to Nigerian society. Much after the independence across the continent, one of the major preoccupations African leaders had to contend with is the restoration of African cultures in their pristine forms which were arguably polluted or collapsed by the colonial masters during their reign. No doubt, teenagers and youth generally, are vital segment of the society who could be instrumental in promoting African cultures. But unfortunately, the mentality and lifestyle of the teenagers in African societies have been grossly affected by exposure to western films to such an extent that rather than promoting African cultures, they have become hardened acolytes and promoters of western cultures.
