The imagery of a sword "drinking its fill" indicates complete and thorough execution of justice. In biblical context, the sword often symbolizes God's judgment (Deuteronomy 32:41-42). The heavens may refer to the spiritual forces or principalities that are being judged, aligning with Ephesians 6:12, which speaks of spiritual warfare in heavenly places.
then it will come down upon Edom
Edom, descendants of Esau, represents nations opposed to God's people. Historically, Edom was a neighboring nation to Israel, often in conflict with them (Genesis 36:1, Obadiah 1:1-21). The judgment upon Edom symbolizes God's retribution against those who oppose His covenant people. This can also be seen as a type of ultimate judgment against all nations that oppose God's kingdom, as reflected in the broader prophetic literature (Jeremiah 49:7-22).
upon the people I have devoted to destruction
This phrase indicates a divine decree of total destruction, often referred to as "herem" in Hebrew, meaning something set apart for destruction (Joshua 6:17). It reflects God's sovereign right to judge nations according to His purposes. The concept of being "devoted to destruction" underscores the seriousness of opposing God's will and serves as a warning to all nations. This is echoed in the New Testament, where ultimate judgment is reserved for those who reject God's salvation through Christ (Revelation 19:15).
Persons / Places / Events
1. God
The speaker in this verse, declaring His judgment.

2. Edom
A nation descended from Esau, often representing opposition to Israel and God’s people.

3. Heavens
The realm where God’s sword has been filled, symbolizing divine authority and judgment.

4. Judgment
The act of divine retribution that God is about to execute.

5. Destruction
The outcome for Edom, as decreed by God.
Teaching Points
Divine Judgment is Certain
God's declaration of judgment upon Edom serves as a reminder that His justice is inevitable and righteous.

God's Sovereignty Over Nations
The prophecy against Edom illustrates God's control over all nations and His ability to execute judgment according to His will.

The Consequences of Opposing God
Edom's fate warns against the dangers of opposing God and His people, encouraging believers to align themselves with God's purposes.

The Power of God's Word
The imagery of the sword in the heavens underscores the power and authority of God's Word, which is active and effective in bringing about His plans.

Hope in God's Justice
While the judgment is severe, it assures believers that God will ultimately right all wrongs and establish His justice on earth.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Isaiah 34

What fate awaits Edom according to biblical prophecies?

Does archaeological evidence support the claim in Malachi 1:3–4 that Edom’s territory would remain desolate, or does history contradict this?

Does Isaiah 34:5–6 have any historical or archaeological evidence to support its portrayal of Edom’s judgment?

Does Ezekiel 35 conflict with other scriptures that suggest different fates or timelines for Edom?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(5) My sword shall be bathed in heaven . . .--Literally, hath drunk to the full. The words find an echo in Deuteronomy 32:41-42, and Jeremiah 46:10. There, however, the sword is soaked, or made drunk with blood. Here it is "bathed in heaven," and this seems to require a different meaning. Some suppose a reference to the old" war in heaven," when the sword of Divine justice was drawn against the devil and his angels. Others regard the sword now to be used against the Idumeans as first, in heaven, "made drunken" with the Divine anger. It shall come down upon Idumea (comp. Isaiah 63:1-6). The Edomites first showed themselves enemies of Israel when they refused to allow the Israelites, under Moses, "a passage through their border" (Numbers 20:14-21). David subdued them (2 Samuel 9:14); but they revolted from Jehoram (2 Chronicles 21:8-10), and were thenceforward among the most bitter adversaries of the southern kingdom. They "smote Judah" in the reign of Ahaz (2 Chronicles 28:17), and were always ready to "shed the blood of the children of Israel by the force of the sword in the time of their calamity" (Ezekiel 35:5). Amos speaks of them very much in the same tone as Isaiah (Amos 1:11, 12). They ultimately "filled up the measure of their iniquities" by open rejoicing when Jerusalem was destroyed, and the people led away captive by Nebuchadnezzar (Psalm 137:7; Obadiah 1:10-14; Lamentations 4:21, 22; Ezekiel 35:10-13). In the present passage we must regard the Edomites as representative of the enemies of God's people generally (see the introductory paragraph). The people of my curse; i.e. "the people on whom I have laid a curse" - the Edomites. Esau was to "serve" Jacob (Genesis 25:23; Genesis 27:40), Edom to be "a possession" for Judah (Numbers 24:18). God had said of Edom, probably before Isaiah uttered the present prophecy, "For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof... but I will send a fire upon Teman, which shall devour the palaces of Bozrah" (Amos 1:11, 12).
