It is interesting to note that inspite of misconceptions about the role of religion in the public sphere – that it is separated from the secular realm etc.,-in reality religion has always played a contributive and affective role in the society. It is in this sense, that Christianity has also played a very decisive role in human history. Of course, though more often than not, its influence has not been good – considering cases such as the crusades and colonialism – it also has had its prophetic moments of challenging injustice. It is such manifestations of ethical responsibility that intrinsically forms an inseparable part of theology and Christian spirituality. This paper is an attempt to understand this interaction between theology, ethics and spirituality and its implications for the society. Considering the vastness and the complexity of the subject, I intend to engage in this task by basing myself on the theology of two renowned theologians, Paul Tillich and Johann Baptist Metz. However, given the fact that I approach this question explicitly as a theologian, there might be a certain greater visibility given to theology, although ethics and spirituality are never absent from the conversation. In that sense, this paper both directly and indirectly seeks to answer questions such as: How does justice relate to theology and spirituality? How does one act responsibly in contexts of social injustice and oppression? And more specifically, how do Tillich and Metz approach questions of injustice, political responsibility, and suffering? However, while raising these questions, a simultaneous purpose of this paper is also to investigate if Tillich can make any contributions to political theology. My thesis would be that by allowing Tillich to dialogue with a political theologian like Metz, one can not only recognize Tillich's theology as a political theology but also deepen and nuance it further. All the same, let me caution that this paper does not claim to do an in-depth study of Tillich's and Metz's theology, for that would be a much larger project, impossible in this limited space. Rather what I attempt is to give a quick (though hopefully not superficial) treatment of Tillich and Metz and through that exercise try to re-visualize and re-propose Tillich's 'political' theology. Keeping the above questions and objectives in mind, this paper tries to first locate Tillich and Metz within their particular life experiences and then move onto selected significant features of their theologies. In this essay, I trace the convergence of Tillich’s apologetics with the historical and pedagogical influence of his fellow German theologian and one-time Phillips-Universität in Marburg colleague. I argue that scholars have, through a lack of historical perspective, radically misinterpreted Tillich’s attitude toward demythologization. They have consequently failed to grasp the full extent of Tillich’s reaction to the modern ecumenical problem of literalistic thought. I address this absence in the theo-historiographical literature and come to the provocative conclusion that Tillich’s views on the matter of demythologization were much closer to Bultmann’s than is commonly assumed. This conclusion reveals a more radical Tillich, one intimately concerned with the spiritual struggles of modern man and passionately committed to the development and reformulation of the liberal theological tradition. Ultimately, I hope that this analysis will serve as a starting point for future historical inquiries into Tillich’s engagement with contemporaries. As Meditz notes, Tillich was one of over 1600 academics suspended in April 1933 "for being Jews and / or critics of the regime" (p. 1). At the time, Tillich held a professorial post in the philosophy faculty of the University of Frankfurt and was thus close to the epicentre of radical leftist thinking ("the Frankfurt School") and associated with several leading Jewish philosophers (such as Theodor Adorno). Tillich's most recent book, The Socialist Decision (1933), was for long believed to have been not only banned but ritually burned in the Frankfurt book-burnings of May 1933, though Meditz seems to favor the revisionist view that this was not in fact the case (p. 75). But though he was regarded with suspicion by the new regime, Tillich was later that year offered the chair of theology in Berlin if he was willing to retract The Socialist Decision. According to Hannah Tillich, his response was to ask two questions, one of which was "What about the Jews?" Clearly the government's response did not satisfy him, and shortly afterwards he left Germany to go into what proved to be permanent exile in the United States of America. This new study, based on the author's Ph.D. thesis, sets these dramatic events in the context of Tillich's lifelong engagement with "the Jewish question," from his postgraduate work on Schelling through his final public lecture on the relationship between the history of religion and systematic theology. He was deeply rooted in the thought-world of German Idealism and therefore, according to some commentators, took his initial orientation from a philosophy that was inherently anti-Judaic. However, Meditz shows that Tillich reached a position that was no longer simplistically supersessionist.
