Anche il sito di Callanish in Scozia presenta principalmente allineamenti legati alla luna, forse in relazione a un "lunistizio inferiore" descritto in antiche fonti. Nel tentativo di spiegare in che modo Marte orbitasse attorno al Sole, prima di arrivare all'ellisse Keplero mise alla prova più di settanta ipotesi di figure geometriche piane che potessero descrivere le posizioni che Tycho Brahe aveva osservato essere occupate da Marte nel cielo 7 . Se l'astronomo tedesco si fosse ingegnato a capire come non commettere errori invece di azzardare ipotesi e imparare dai suoi insuccessi, probabilmente Newton, che si servì abbondantemente delle tre leggi di Keplero, non avrebbe formulato la legge di gravitazione universale 8 . Quello che ci interessa è quindi sapere quali sono le procedure per riconoscere le relazioni fra i codici esistenti. Nella tradizione di un testo ogni codice, ad eccezione del primo (diciamo l'Originale) è copia di un altro codice; e un modello può dar luogo a piú di una copia. È un po' come nelle famiglie: ogni individuo è figlio di qualcuno e a sua volta può essere padre (o madre) di piú figli. L'ovvia differenza è che per fare un figlio ci vogliono (almeno per il momento e in un modo o nell'altro) un padre e una madre, ossia due individui, mentre un apografo richiede solo un an-tecedente (l'antigrafo), dal quale si sviluppa per partenogenesi. 1 Se la relazione fra i varî individui di una famiglia può essere rappresentata da uno stemma, anche quella tra i codici di una tradizione può essere raffigurata da uno stem-ma stilizzato, in cui, appunto, da un singolo ascendente possono derivare uno o piú discendenti. Precorriamo i tempi, ovvero facciamo quello che in retorica si chiama un hýsteron próteron. Nel normale iter ecdotico prima viene la recensio e dopo l'examinatio. Qui invece facciamo conto di aver già tracciato lo stemma (esito della recensio) e vediamo come si realizzi l'examinatio in condizioni normali. Poi ci chiederemo in che modo possiamo pervenire allo stemma codicum. Può essere conveniente partire da un exemplum fictum di come possa essersi prodotta la trasmissione di un testo.
