interest in railways developed quickly. Unsurprisingly, the opportunity was grasped in March 1969 to join the newly created group intending to preserve at least part of the GCR.</p> <p>On leaving school, University College London beckoned; a mathematics degree was followed by qualification as an actuary. In career terms, this developed over some thirty years into advising large employers on the financing and governance of their pension schemes.</p> <p>Early retirement created an opportunity to become involved properly with GCR, and appointment as a director came along in 2008. Having served as the Railway’s General Manager (in a volunteer capacity) since 2011, Richard stood down from this position in 2017, to be appointed as the Board’s chairman.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <h3><strong><img decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-30807 " src="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Eric-Smith-e1620287918426-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="194" height="194" srcset="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Eric-Smith-e1620287918426-300x300.jpg 300w, https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Eric-Smith-e1620287918426-150x150.jpg 150w, https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Eric-Smith-e1620287918426.jpg 580w" sizes="(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px"/>Eric Smith – Director</strong></h3> <p>Born in Leeds in 1941 during the war. When his Father was posted abroad soon after, his Mother and he were picked up by his two Grandmothers and taken to live in Stocksbridge, a township to the West of Sheffield. The nearest station was Deepcar on the Manchester to Sheffield GCR. It was here that his Father, (after his return 4 years later), cultivated his interest in railways. Little did he know at the time he would be associated with the “London Extension” of the same railway many years later. Whilst he used to love the steamers (especially the green ones), he was never interested in the smelly diesels that replaced them. Neither was he pleased when the line between Sheffield and Manchester was electrified! In spite of his interest he would be the first to admit his technical knowledge of locomotives is limited.</p> <p>Eric’s wife is from Penistone, well known as a major junction on the GCR. They met at school and both worked at the local steelworks, part of the United Steel Company where Eric served an engineering apprenticeship.</p> <p>After decent results at ONC, the company decided to send Eric to one of the Colleges of Advanced Technology, which became the University of Bradford whilst he was there. Over the next few years he picked up a couple of other degrees (one of them extra-murally whilst working for British Steel).</p> <p>Eric left British Steel in 1978 to join The Boots Company in Nottingham as a Senior Electrical Engineer and retired in 2001 as Head of Engineering Services. Looking for something to do in his retirement, he wandered into the Shed one day to enquire about volunteering and that basically was that; still here!</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <h3><strong><img decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-30808 " src="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Ian-Wilson-e1620288000989.jpg" alt="" width="201" height="201" srcset="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Ian-Wilson-e1620288000989.jpg 191w, https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Ian-Wilson-e1620288000989-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px"/>Ian Wilson - Director</strong></h3> <p>Ian Wilson was born in Accrington Lancashire. He grew up, listening in bed to the sound of steam locomotives hauling trains up the notorious Baxenden Bank, he often was punished for being late to school due to looking over the shed wall at Accrington Shed (24A).<br/> He moved to Leicester to continue his education, just in time to miss the end of the GCR in action. He worked as a teacher of Physics and Drama and rose to the position of Deputy Head. His responsibilities included timetabling and Safeguarding.On retirement he exchanged armchair support for the GCR for an active role. Initially working as a member of the Volunteer Support Team, he later was asked also to lead the Education Team with the objective of further developing links with schools and colleges.<br/> He also serves on the Membership Training and Education Advisory Committee (MTAC) of the HRA.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <h3><strong><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-33474" src="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Mahmood-Reza.jpg" alt="" width="201" height="201" srcset="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Mahmood-Reza.jpg 201w, https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Mahmood-Reza-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px"/>Mahmood Reza - Director</strong></h3> <p>Mahmood, London born, emigrated to Leicester in 1982 to study for his first degree at De Montfort University. Work, business, wife, family, and cats have kept him in Leicester. Mahmood is one of nine kids, the middle child and rumoured to be the cutest. He initially qualified as a teacher, worked in education before moving into Industry to work as an accountant. He left industry after five years, as a qualified accountant, and a few other bits of paper along the way.</p> <p>Mahmood founded his own accounting and training firm in 1995. On the International front he has carried out and been involved with several projects, in countries such as Russia, Cuba, Tanzania, Kenya and the Seychelles.</p> <p>He has been actively involved in the governance of arts and educational establishments across the East Midlands and beyond and involved in the charitable and creative and cultural sectors for over 40 years, in a working, professional and voluntary capacity.</p> <p>Mahmood joined GCR as a non-executive director in 2016 and in his words “is looking forward to further supporting this wonderful heritage railway”.</p> <p> </p> <p> </p> <h3><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-33473 size-full" src="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Richard-Bruce.jpg" alt="" width="201" height="201" srcset="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Richard-Bruce.jpg 201w, https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Richard-Bruce-150x150.jpg 150w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px"/>Richard Bruce - Director</h3> <p>Born in London in 1956, Richard spent his early years in Cheltenham, where he developed a keen interest in trains and buses from an early age.</p> <p>After education in the north-west, he joined the NHS in Kent in 1978, moving in 1980 to Leicestershire. A career in Human Resources in the NHS followed, with Richard becoming a Chartered Member of CIPD. Senior roles included Director of Human Resources for Charnwood and North West Leicestershire Primary Care Trust and Associate Director of Human Resources for Leicestershire County and Rutland Primary Care Trust. Areas of expertise included organisational change, equality and diversity and partnership working with trades unions.</p> <p>Richard became a GCR volunteer in 1987, initially as a Booking Clerk at Rothley and taking over as Senior Stationmaster at Quorn & Woodhouse in 2005, which role included managing the GCR’s annual Bonfire Night event from 2006 to 2021. Upon his retirement from NHS in 2013, he became Stations Superintendent, overseeing all four stations on the line and is responsible for training and standards of volunteers on our stations. He is also an active member of Renaissance Railcars, the GCR’s group owning and maintaining the diesel railcar fleet and is a Board member of the Leicester Transport Heritage Trust.</p> <p>Richard joined the GCR Board in July 2022.</p> <p> </p> <h3><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-34335 alignleft" src="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Unknown-150x150.png" alt="" width="201" height="201"/>Scott Manley - Director</h3> <p>Having first visited the Great Central Railway aged 4 for a Day out with Thomas - Scott’s been hooked ever since! As soon as he was old enough he started as a junior porter at Rothley station before moving to the Guards department at Loughborough.</p> <div dir="ltr"> <p>Scott joined the Great Central Railway as a paid member of staff in 2014, progressing to Operations Manager in 2016. While holding that position, he was fortunate enough to work on a number of interesting film contracts and testing projects in addition to overseeing the day to day operations of the railway and special events operationally. Resigning as Operations Manager at the beginning of 2021 to pursue a childhood dream of being a Mainline Train Driver, Scott is now based at Derby spending his working week travelling through picturesque countryside between Bristol and Newcastle.</p> <p>Although having resigned from the GC, Scott never left as a volunteer and continues as a Diesel Driver, Signalman, Guard and Duty Traffic Manager. With over a decade of hands on operational experience at GC, Scott hopes to bring a younger perspective to the Board. He’s keen to see the GC work more closely with other local businesses, the community and improve our accessibility. His role involves the long term strategic development of the network and delivering enhancement schemes such as Euston station rebuild and the resignalling of West Coast Mainline North.</p> <p>Previously he was with Chiltern Railways as their Managing Director, delivering passenger train services between London Marylebone, Oxford and Birmingham. Dave has railways in his blood, he was a volunteer for 17 years at the now closed Cadeby Light Railway in Leicestershire and is a member of the Rugby Model Engineering Society where he runs a 7 1/4” gauge steam loco. He lives in Rugby and is a frequent visitor to GCR as well as modelling the line in O gauge where miniature “windcutters” reign supreme!</p> <h3><strong style="font-size: 16px;">Clive Baines - Director</strong></h3> <p>Born, bred and educated in Birmingham, Clive ran his own engineering company for 39 years before selling it to a management buy-out.</p> <p>His involvement at GCR dates back more than 35 years and he has provided significant financial assistance to a number of projects at GCR</p> <p>He also provides assistance to a number of other heritage concerns, not always railway.</p> <p>He joined DCRT as a trustee in 2009 and the GCR plc board as a director in 2017</p> <h3><strong>Mark Beckett - Director</strong></h3> <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Mark joined the railway in 1988 as a British Rail management trainee, and progressed through junior operational positions before working in the team at BR HQ.<br/> </span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">He was Development Director of Chiltern Railways from 1995 for a period of 12 years, and was on the Boards of Chiltern and its parent companies M40 Trains and Laing Rail. He led and negotiated the successful bid for the only 20-year franchise, and conceived and negotiated the various Evergreen projects that have transformed the Chiltern route.<br/> </span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Mark then took a career break from the railway in order to be chief operating officer of Gloucester Cathedral where he led a team covering safety, property, finance, volunteers, restoration, and visitor experience in an organisation of similar size to the GCR. Since 2014 he has been a railway strategy consultant, working for a range of local authorities, combined authorities and train operators on business cases, business plans and future rail strategy.</span></p> <div dir="ltr"> <div dir="ltr"> <div dir="ltr"> <div dir="ltr"> <div>He has a passion for the Great Central, having grown up in Loughborough and Cosby.</div> <h3><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-37049" style="font-size: 16px; font-weight: 400;" src="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Mug-Shot-281x300.jpg" alt="" width="187" height="200" srcset="https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Mug-Shot-281x300.jpg 281w, https://www.gcrailway.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/Mug-Shot.jpg 300w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px"/></h3> <h3><strong>Ian Walters - Director</strong></h3> <p class="x_MsoNormal">Ian is a qualified accountant who worked in various sectors including retail and defence prior to joining the rail industry in 1991. Ian rose through various finance jobs whilst at Chiltern Railways, becoming finance director in May 2001. He is the founder and co-owner and Managing Director, of SLC Rail, which he started in 2009. SLC predominately specialises in third party and outside party schemes and has successfully opened 12 new railway stations, with 11 more set to open soon and many more in the early stages of development.</p> <p class="x_MsoNormal">Additionally, Ian serves as a Director of E-Rail, an innovative business that has made it possible to use land value capture on the Northumberland Line and is now looking to do so on many other rail schemes in the UK.
