His most famous work was the discovery that pernicious anemia (hemoglobin deficiency), which had previously been an almost invariably fatal disease, could be effectively treated by feeding the patient large amounts of raw or cooked beef liver. For this finding, Dr. Whipple shared the 1934 Nobel Prize for Medicine with <a href="/people/228/000127844/">George R. Minot</a> and <a href="/people/287/000127903/">William P. Murphy</a>. He gave a third of his prize winning to his long-time assistant, Frieda Saur Robscheit-Robbins. He also studied tropical diseases while working in Panama during the construction of the canal, and later served for many years as an administrator and trustee for the Rockefeller Foundation. He was the Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester, and as a pathologist, he was the first to diagnose lipodystrophia intestinalis in an autopsy.
