He lived during one of the most interesting times, the heyday of Great Britain's Victorian era, from 1809 to 1882, when the sciences, and openness to questioning the <mark class="term" data-term="status quo" data-term-def="The existing state or condition." data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/status+quo/5290">status quo</mark>, were growing cultural forces. He had a long, productive, brilliant career, and was almost famous even before returning from his five-year voyage around the world on the H. M. S. <i>Beagle</i>. Luckily, his correspondence, diaries, and personal workbooks, as well as the writings of his relatives, friends, colleagues, and rivals, document Darwin's adult life extensively. They tell us that every facet of the man reflected his passion for the patterns of <mark class="term" data-term="evolution" data-term-def="Change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift." data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/evolution/5284">evolution</mark>, its rules and consequences. Darwin's success was due, in part, to having learned from others, just as the great physicist <mark class="term" data-term="Isaac Newton" data-term-def="English alchemist, physicist, astronomer and mathematician born in Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, Lincolnshire (1643-1727). In 1672, Newton offered an experimental proof that light is&hellip;" data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/Isaac+Newton/3725">Isaac Newton</mark> claimed to have stood "on the shoulders of giants." </p><p>Thus, to develop the concept of <mark class="term" data-term="evolution" data-term-def="Change in the gene pool of a population from generation to generation by such processes as mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift." data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/evolution/5284">evolution</mark> by <mark class="term" data-term="natural selection" data-term-def="The process whereby characteristics that promote survival and reproduction are passed on to future generations, so these characteristics become more frequent&hellip;" data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/natural+selection/11402">natural selection</mark>, Darwin did not have to invent the idea that animals and plants were adapted to their <mark class="term" data-term="environment" data-term-def="The conditions that surround and affect an organism." data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/environment/8270">environment</mark> because that was already recognized in the late 1700s. He did not have to buck the Biblical story of a seven-day creation because the father of modern geology, <mark class="term" data-term="Charles Lyell" data-term-def="A British geologist born in Scotland (1797-1875 CE). His most important work was <i>The Principles of Geology: An Attempt to Explain&hellip;" data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/Lyell%2C+Charles/4467">Charles Lyell</mark>, had already shown that Earth's history extended over at least millions of years, not the thousands implied by the Bible. Darwin did not even have to come up with the idea of natural selection by himself – it was inspired by someone else! Another Englishman, <mark class="term" data-term="Thomas Robert Malthus" data-term-def="English ordained minister and economist born in Dorking, Surrey (1766-1834). In 1798 he published his <i>Essay on Population</i>, suggesting that a&hellip;" data-term-url="/en/glossary/view/Malthus%2C+Thomas+Robert/4554">Thomas Robert Malthus</mark>, who was a clergyman and an economist, wrote <em>Essay on the <mark class="term" data-term="principle" data-term-def="In the sciences, a principle is a fundamental, primary, or general law or truth.
